LBCC’s fifth President Dr. Rita Cavin and Joseph Novak at his retirement from the college Board of Education in January 2007. Novak helped hire Dr. Cavin, who served as LBCC’s first female president. Through the years, LBCC has been fortunate to have had many dedicated people who gave their time and energy to help make it the great institution it is today. One of those people was Joseph Novak. When Joseph retired from the LBCC Board of Education after serving 25 years, he said, “I think LBCC is the finest community college in this state. Education is the greatest tool you can have in terms of economic development.” As one of the longest-serving college board members, serving from 1981 and 2006, Joseph gave not only of his time but also his unending passion. Since 1971, LBCC has offered community education classes in Sweet Home and surrounding areas. Originally named the Santiam Center, the center shared an office with the Sweet Home Chamber of Commerce at 1240 10th Avenue. Mona Waibel served as director. Approximately 275 students took classes that first year, which included high school equivalency classes, art, business education, welding and writing classes. Most classes were held in local churches during the day and at Sweet Home High School in the evening. As demand for community education grew, LBCC and the Chamber continued their partnership by leasing a building at 1314 Long Street. The new space included a classroom, storage, restrooms and offices for LBCC and Chamber use. An open house was held in 1975. In 1985, the college expanded its reach to include classes in Brownsville and Central Linn. Originally housed in three modular units outside Lebanon Union High School, the LBCC Lebanon Center has served East Linn county since 1972, providing space to hold community education classes. In 1981, the center relocated to a 19-acre site at 2600 Stoltz Hill Road, which encompassed seven acres of donated land and 12 acres of adjacent land purchased by the college.  For some, the Stoltz Hill location was a bit off the beaten path, and in 1986, the Lebanon community and the Chamber of Commerce requested the center to move downtown. The former J.C. Penney building on 550 Main Street was donated to house the center, and the Stoltz Hill site was put up for sale. The new location offered three times the space as the Stoltz Hill facility. In 1988, the college received a state economic development grant to remodel the building, which was completed in 1990. Senator Ron Wyden will hold a town hall meeting 2 p.m. Saturday, March 17 at Linn-Benton Community College in the Activities Center gym, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. These upcoming town halls will increase to 881 the number of town halls Wyden has held since pledging when first elected to hold annual town halls in each of Oregon’s 36 counties. “These open-to-all town halls in Lincoln and Linn counties are part of my promise to provide Oregonians in every part of the state opportunities to share their ideas and ask any question,” Wyden said. “These conversations are a big part of the ‘Oregon Way’ that represent the best of our state’s proud tradition of participatory democracy.” Senator Wyden’s town hall is free and open to the public. The 41 st annual Family Fun Day for families with children ages one to six will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 10 at Linn-Benton Community Activities Center gym, 6500 Pacific Blvd, Albany.   Families can participate in activities such as play dough, obstacle course, crafts, bounce house, face painting, putt-putt golf and more. Admission is free. Activity tickets are .25 cents each. A used book and toy sale will be held during the event. Proceeds from Family Fun Day support the more than 2,000 parents in Linn and Benton counties who attend LBCC Parenting Education classes each year. LBCC President Greg Hamann Linn-Benton Community College is joining the state’s 16 other community college to ask the Oregon Legislature to allocate an additional $32 million to the Community College Support Fund (CCSF) to mitigate tuition increases throughout Oregon and restore funding for student success in the second year of the 2017-2019 biennium. At the end of the 2017 legislative session, the Joint Ways and Means Committee restored more than $70 million to the Public Universities Support Fund (PUSF) to support student success at universities, and allocated an amount thought to be proportionally the same for community colleges. It appears that the 11th-hour calculation for the two-year schools was off by $32 million.  That shortfall means approximately $2 million less for LBCC. The funding would have substantial impact on programs to help students more quickly finish their programs, and either transfer to four-year schools or begin jobs in high demand field...

Volunteers are needed to facilitate small group training sessions for students in varied health care and medical fields. No medical experience needed. A free information session and facilitator training will be held Thursday, Sept. 24 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at LBCC’s Vineyard Mt. Room, Calapooia Center, room 213, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Health care students in the fields of pharmacy, medical assisting, nursing, physician and public health from Linn-Benton Community College, Comp-NW Medical School and Oregon State University will meet in small, interdisciplinary group sessions to work on communications skills. Volunteer facilitators help guide the students through real-life case scenarios during each session. Sessions are designed to help students communicate and work together across their varied medical disciplines. Victoria Fridley Fred Stuewe Dean Dowless Jack Stone Linn-Benton Community College announced Distinguished Staff Award and Pastega Award winners at the college’s Inservice April 16. Business Management faculty member Jack Stone was named Distinguished Staff. Stone, of Corvallis, began work at the college in 1996, and is retiring from the college in June. Nominated by his peers for his dedication and commitment to LBCC, students and the community, Stone was recognized for his devotion to teaching, and his inspiring mentorship, friendship and leadership to fellow faculty and staff at the college. The Pastega Faculty Excellence Award was presented to LBCC welding faculty members Dean Dowless and Fred Stuewe. Dowless, of Corvallis, began teaching at the college part-time in 1983, and has been a full-time instructor since 1993. Linn-Benton Community College announced that it received a third year of funding to support the Parenting Success Network in Linn and Benton counties, a collaborative project facilitated by the college. The $90,000 grant from the Oregon Parenting EducationCollaborative is part of a new multi-year initiative developed by The Oregon Community Foundation in partnership with the Meyer Memorial Trust , The FordFamily Foundation , The Collins Foundation and Oregon State University . Established to increase public acceptance of the importance of parenting education, the Parenting Success Network helps coordinate and improve the quality of parenting services, enhance accessibility of information regarding services and positive parenting, and provides training and resources for parenting educators. Awards were recently announced for the Central Western Oregon Science Expo (CWOSE) held at Linn-Benton Community College in March. CWOSE is a regional fair affiliated with the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair and the North West Science Exposition. The fair hosted 87 high school students and 90 middle school students from Linn, Benton, Lane, Marion, Polk, Yamhill, Tillamook and Lincoln counties to compete in science and engineering categories. The students produced 147 exhibits, with 50 judges on-hand to score the projects. Participants won a combined total of $56,000 in scholarships to Oregon Universities, along with acknowledgment of excellent achievement from several organizations. Two students also won an all-expense paid trip to participate at the International Science and Engineering Fair to be held in Los Angeles, California in May. A free information and orientation session for those interested in becoming a Polysomnographic Technologist, or sleep technician, will be held at Linn-Benton Community College on Thursday, March 17 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Calapooia Center building, room CC-213, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Polysomnographic Technologists assist sleep physicians to help patients with sleep disorders such as sleep apnea. Technologists ready the patient for testing, track the patient’s sleep patterns, and write and interpret the results for the physician. LBCC’s Polysomnographic Technologist program combines online and in-class instruction with a clinical practicum. Skill areas covered include the physiology of sleep with an emphasis on sleep disorders and their treatment. The program also covers how to administer, interpret and score a variety of sleep tests. Tickets are now on sale for the annual Linn-Benton Community College Winter Banquet presented by the LBCC Culinary Arts students. The banquet will be held on Friday, March 4, with two seating’s at 6:30 and 7 p.m., in the College Center Commons dining room. All dishes are prepared and served by LBCC’s culinary students. This year’s theme for the buffet-style banquet is “Take a Culinary Tour of the Iberian Peninsula,” including foods from Portugal, Spain and the Basque region. A sampling of the menu includes minted lamb meatballs, laquered pork ribs, Beira Alta roasted pork, wild boar stew, roasted chicken in sherry sauce, paella, white fish with olive and sofrito, and garlic roasted leg of lamb. The Valley Writers Series at Linn-Benton Community College will host a reading by Corvallis author and LBCC English faculty Alison Ruch on Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 10 a.m. in the LBCC Forum building, room F-104, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Ruch writes short fiction and teaches composition and creative writing classes at LBCC. In spring of 2009, she received an award as one of LBCC’s outstanding part-time faculty. Originally from Madison, Wisconsin, Ruch moved to Corvallis in 2004 and received her master’s of fine art degree in Creative Writing at Oregon State University. During the program, she wrote a novel about a comic book artist entitled Comic Toast. Currently, Ruch is working on a collection of short stories, tentatively titled Human Error. Ruch’s story “Safe” is forthcoming in The Iowa Review. She has published stories in Stringtown Magazine and with the Oregon Literary Review. Linn-Benton Community College's Physical Science Department received a donation of two Vernier Software and Technology LabQuest measuring tools for use in its new physical science project room in Madrone Hall. The LabQuests were donated by second-year LBCC computer science physics student and Corvallis resident Nathan Murrow and LBCC physical science faculty member Greg Mulder, who won them through a competition on Facebook held by Vernier Software and Technology. The company awarded their 500th Facebook fan, Murrow, and the fan’s referrer, Mulder, the LabQuest Quick Start Package as part of the social media competition. The LabQuests will be part of the scientific equipment inventory kept in the project room for student use only.
