LBCC Hosts Dr. Sarah Swarts, Lecture and Discussion on Transgender Health Needs

Dr. Sarah Swarts of Samaritan Health Services will present a lecture and discussion on Transgender Hormone Therapy and Patient Care at 1 p.m. Friday, March 4 at Linn-Benton Community College Russell Tripp Performance Center, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany Swarts, a board-certified endocrinologist and former medical director of the diabetes program at Centracare Clinic in Saint Cloud, Minnesota, will discuss the health disparities, needs, and challenges that face the transgender community and offer suggestions for addressing these issues. LBCC Performing Arts Presents “Improv Comedy Jam”

“Improv Comedy Jam” will be held Thursday, March 11 at 7:30 p.m. at Linn-Benton Community College’s Russell Tripp Performance Center, Takena Hall, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. This live comedy show features spontaneous scenes and games in the style of the popular TV show "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" Performers include actors from LBCC, South and West Albany High Schools, Oregon State University, Open Source Improv and Majestic Improv, with several scenes played by Improv veterans from the region. Audience participation is encouraged, including shouting out suggestions for scenes and joining the actors on stage for "all play" community games. LBCC Unity Celebration Honors Diversity, Social Justice

LBCC’s Values, Inclusion, and Cultural Engagement Council presented awards for work promoting unity, diversity and social justice at LBCC and in the community at its annual Unity Celebration held Feb. 24. LBCC Developmental Studies faculty member and Learning Center Coordinator Chareane Wimbley-Gouveia, of Corvallis, and LBCC student Chelsey Mick, of Corvallis, received the Analee Fuentes Diversity and Social Justice Award. OSU International Student Advising and Services was presented with the Gary Westford Community Connection award. The awards recognize individuals and community groups whose work establishes unity and inclusivity while promoting diversity and social justice at LBCC and in our communities.

LBCC NSH Gallery Exhibit Mixed Media Drawings by Chia Hui Shen

"Young Violinist" by Chia Hui Shen An exhibit of mixed media drawings by Corvallis artist Chia Hui Shen, entitled “Nurtured by Love,” will be on display March 2 through April 21 at Linn-Benton Community College North Santiam Hall Gallery , 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Chia Hui Shen creates colorful portraits with an open, gestural line, which adds to the sense of action and energy in her works. Much of the inspiration for her work in this exhibit comes from her two children, who are often the subjects of her drawings. She states, “Through my work, I hope to inspire people to patiently nurture the talents of their children.” A reception will be held in the second floor atrium of NSH Gallery Wednesday, April 13 from 12 to 1 p.m., where Shen will speak about her work and answer questions. LBCC Seeking Applicants for Board of Education Vacancy

The Linn-Benton Community College Board of Education is seeking applicants to fill a board vacancy for the position of Zone 6-7. Zone 6-7 includes Corvallis and some of the surrounding areas. LBCC Real Estate Property Manager Course

A Real Estate Property Manager course will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College beginning April 7. Designed to prepare you to manage rental property, this course combines online and in-class instruction to meet the 60-hour requirement for the Oregon Property Manager Pre-License course. This seven-week class will meet on Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. beginning April 7 through May 19 at the LBCC Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW in room CC-212. Cost for this non-credit course is $550. LBCC Real Estate Broker Pre-License Exam Course

A Real Estate Broker Pre-License Exam course will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College starting April 6. Designed to prepare you for the Oregon Real Estate Broker License Exam, this 150-hour course is the fastest way to qualify to take the state exam. This 10-week course will meet on Wednesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. beginning April 6th through June 8 at LBCC’s Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW in room CC-212. The course content will be mostly Internet based. Students are expected to have online capability, to self-study and attend all class sessions. A mandatory study session will be held on Saturday, the last day of the class. Cost for this non-credit course is $600. LBCC Winter Choir Concert “Luminous Night”

LBCC Choir The winter choral concert “Luminous Night” will be held Thursday, March 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Linn-Benton Community College’s LBCC Russell Tripp Performance Center, Takena Hall, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. The performance includes LBCC’s award-winning concert and chamber choirs, conducted by Raymund Ocampo, LBCC director of Choral Studies, and accompanied by Craig Hanson and Khoa Tran, and the a cappella groups Blue Light Special and The Sirens . LBCC Pesticide Applicator Class

Pesticide applicator class will be held through the Small Business Development Center at Linn-Benton Community College. Designed to prepare senior agriculture workers to take the State of Oregon Department of Agriculture pesticide applicator exam, classes provide in-depth training, including extra coaching in math and calibration skills. Pesticides Laws and Safety, Public and Commercial application, will be held February 25 and 26, from 8 a.m. to noon at LBCC’s Calapooia Center, room CC-103, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW. Cost is $119. The Public Safety Office will hold an active shooter exercise with the Albany Police Department Tuesday, June 14. This full-scale training exercise will involve local law enforcement, fire department, paramedics and LBCC’s Incident Command team to provide practice of a coordinated emergency response at the college. The exercise will be limited to a few key buildings on campus to minimize impact to normal operations. This type of training not only gives local responders valuable practice, it also gives the college Incident Command team an opportunity to interact with other emergency responders and to test the college’s response and communications during and after an incident - valuable training that can be used in any emergency or natural disaster situation. LBCC Art, Community Education Classes in February

A variety of art and community education classes, including several free classes, will be held through Linn-Benton Community College this month. Learn the basics of design and acrylic painting with professional muralist Victoria Knight in the class “You Can Paint Acrylics.” Take home a completed mountain passage scene. LBCC Holds National Career and Technical Education Signing Day

Linn-Benton Community College will hold a National Career and Technical Education Signing Day event Thursday, February 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the college boardroom, Calapooia Center, room CC-103.  High school students will sign letters of intent, which guarantees them a seat in some of the highly competitive college programs offered at LBCC. LBCC’s Career and Technical Education programs include Automotive Technology, Heavy Equipment/Diesel, Welding, Mechatronics, Machine Tool Technology, Computer Aided Drafting and Design, and Medical Assistant.  The signing, a national event, guarantees student entry into high demand programs, with the aim to help set students on the path to high wage careers. Suzanne Bonnen Harp and piano player Suzanne Bonnen will perform at the LBCC Benton Center Acoustic Showcase Friday, Feb. 19 from Noon to 1 p.m., 757 NW Polk Ave., Corvallis. Linn-Co Federal Credit Union pledge boosts support of LBCC’s new Healthcare Center

Students attending Linn-Benton Community College's new Health Occupations Center will benefit from a $5,000 gift by Linn-Co Federal Credit Union, which will help provide state-of-the-art medical equipment to train students on the skills needed for a fast-changing health care field. “All of us at Linn-Co Federal CU are pleased to be able to support LBCC with their new Health Occupations Center," said Carol Cromwell, CEO of Linn-Co FCU. LBCC 39th Annual Family Fun Day

The 39th annual Family Fun Day at Linn-Benton Community College will be held Saturday, Feb. 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the LBCC Activities Center gym, Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd.  Activities for children ages one to six include play dough, an obstacle course, crafts, bounce house, face painting, putt-putt golf, used book and toy sale, and more. Activity tickets are .25 cents each. LBCC Ceramics Instructor Holds Lecture, Demonstration

Linn-Benton Community College ceramics instructor Renee McKitterick will hold a slide lecture and demonstration on working in porcelain Feb. 19 and 20. McKitterick spent last summer as an artist in residence at The Pottery Workshop in Jingdezhen, China, where she completed a body of work in porcelain while exploring the technical methodologies. She will present a free slide lecture Friday, Feb. 19 from 7 to 8 p.m. at the LBCC Benton Center , 757 Polk Ave., room BC-244, Corvallis. McKitterick will also give a demonstration on porcelain techniques Saturday, Feb. 20 at the Benton Center ceramics studio. Cost is $45. The slide lecture is open to the public.
