LBCC Hosts Dr. Sarah Swarts, Lecture and Discussion on Transgender Health Needs

Dr. Sarah Swarts of Samaritan Health Services will present a lecture and discussion on Transgender Hormone Therapy and Patient Care at 1 p.m. Friday, March 4 at Linn-Benton Community College Russell Tripp Performance Center, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany

Swarts, a board-certified endocrinologist and former medical director of the diabetes program at Centracare Clinic in Saint Cloud, Minnesota, will discuss the health disparities, needs, and challenges that face the transgender community and offer suggestions for addressing these issues.

Sherrilyn Sytsma, nursing faculty at Linn-Benton Community College, commented on the need for the discussion, stating “In a 2011 survey, 50 percent of transgender people reported having to teach their providers about transgender care, and 19 percent reported being refused medical care. We want our nursing students, as well as other medical providers in the area, to be equipped to provide informed, compassionate care.”

This event is free and open to the public. The event is sponsored by the LBCC Nursing Department, the LBCC Library, and the LBCC Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.
