LBCC English Faculty Present Spring Light

“Spring’s Light,” a reading and fundraiser , will be held at the LBCC Benton Center Friday, May 16 at 7 p.m., 757 NW Polk Street, Corvallis.  Enjoy readings by LBCC’s English department faculty and students, and a no‑host bar of wine, beer, non-alcoholic beverages, savory treats and desserts. Benton Center Holds Ceramics Lecture, Workshop

Chris Baskin, Goodoak Leaf bowl. Portland ceramic artist Chris Baskin will hold a slide lecture and workshop May 16 and 17 at the LBCC Benton Center, 757 NW Polk Ave., Corvallis. Originally from New Jersey, Baskin has a long and varied background in the pottery world, and has taught at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, and at colleges and universities in Arizona and Louisville, Kentucky. His pottery provides an apt vessel to express his belief that beauty resides in the ordinary, the everyday, and the human. Baskin feels that making ceramics enables him to reach across categories and boundaries and to celebrate a common sense of humanity. Baskin will share his work at an evening slide lecture, which is free and open to the public, Friday, May 16 from 7 to 8 p.m. at the LBCC Benton Center ceramics studio. Benton Center Art Installation Dedication "inspired"

The LBCC Benton Center will hold a dedication for the new art installation “inspired” Friday, May 16 from 6 to 7 p.m. in the centers’ south hallway, 757 NW Polk Ave., Corvallis. Designed and created by LBCC ceramic instructor Cynthia Spencer's winter term “Site Specific and Multi-Part Ceramics” class, “inspired” welcomes viewers with a dance of color. LBCC NSH Gallery Exhibits Annual Art Student Juried Show

Nearly 50 art works by 43 student artists are on view at the Annual Art Student Juried Show in the North Santiam Hall Galleries at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 SW Pacific Blvd. A reception and awards ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, May 7 from noon to 1 p.m. in the NSH second floor atrium. Juror Cynthia Spencer, a ceramic artist and director of the Corvallis Arts Center, will be on hand to confer more than $2,000 in cash prizes from donors and gift certificates from area merchants. The exhibit was open to students who have taken art classes at the college during the past year. Media on exhibit include paintings in oil, watercolor and acrylic; drawings in graphite, colored pencil, and charcoal; photography; ceramic sculptures and mixed-media. The show runs through June 6. NSH Gallery is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

LBCC Honors Distinguished Alumni

Suzanne Gaulocher and Dale Stowell have been named 2014 Linn-Benton Community College Distinguished Alumni. They will be recognized at the annual Alumni Reception at LBCC’s Albany campus May 7 at 7 p.m. Gaulocher, of Menlo Park, Calif., is currently the Director of Community Engaged Learning at Stanford University. With a focus on health, she works across Stanford’s seven schools, guiding faculty, students and community partners to increase community engagement and service learning opportunities, along with public service internships for Stanford undergraduates. Gaulocher’s work history includes both research and activism that has improved health and community engagement in the U.S. and throughout the world. Her work has focused on the intersection of human health and the environment with a focus on community engagement and equity. LBCC Performing Arts brings the classic sci-fi musical “Little Shop of Horrors” to life at Linn-Benton Community College’s Russell Tripp Performance Center May 15-16 and May 22-24 at 7:30 p.m., and May 17 at 2 p.m. Devouring the hearts of theater-goers for more than 30 years, “Little Shop of Horrors” is a deviously delicious production that tells the story of Seymour, a florist who comes across a new breed of plant, which soon becomes a foul-mouthed, R & B singing carnivore, promising him fame and fortune if he keeps feeding her–in blood! Linn-Benton Opera Guild Previews "The Pirates of Penzance"

The Linn-Benton Opera Guild will preview the opera The Pirates of Penzance, by Gilbert and Sullivan, on Wednesday, May 7 at 7:45 p.m. at 303 Benton Hall, Oregon State University campus, Corvallis. OSU music professor Angela Carlson will tell the story of the opera and play recorded excerpts from the score. Admission is free to Linn-Benton Opera Guild members, students of Linn-Benton Community College and OSU. Cost for the general public is $5. Performance dates will be May 9, 15 and 17 at 7:30 p.m. and May 11 at 2 p.m. at the Keller Auditorium, 222 SW Clay, Portland. The opera will be sung in English with projections above the stage. LBCC QuickBooks Classes

Learn the basics of QuickBooks in classes offered through Linn-Benton Community College Small Business Development Center. Guided Tour QuickBooks is a four-hour class designed for those with no previous experience using a computer-based accounting system.  Class will meet May 6 and 8, from 2 to 3:50 p.m. in the LBCC Forum building, room F-202, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Cost for this non-credit class is $69.   QuickBooks I class is designed to help you set up an accounting system using QuickBooks 2013. This 10-hour class will meet on May 15, 22, 29, June 5 and 12, from 2 to 3:50 p.m., in the Forum building, room F-202. Cost for this non-credit class is $195. LBCC Pesticide Applicator Class

Pesticide Private Applicator class will be held through the Small Business Development Center at Linn-Benton Community College May 8 and May 9. Designed to prepare senior agriculture workers to take the State of Oregon Department of Agriculture pesticide applicator exam, classes provide in-depth training, including extra coaching in math and calibration skills. Pesticides Private Applicator will be held May 8, from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and May 9, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at LBCC’s Calapooia Center, room CC-213, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW. Cost is $99. LBCC Access: Intro to Databases class

The class “Access: Intro to Databases” will be held at Linn-Benton Community College’s Benton Center starting May 5. This one-credit class covers how to enter, store and analyze data for business and personal use. Learn how to create tables, forms, and reports; how to enter, store, retrieve and print information, and work with basic templates. Forklift Safety Training

Forklift Safety Training will be offered Saturday, April 26 from 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Business and Employer Services at Linn-Benton Community College, IC building room 103, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. This eight-hour course will provide four hours of classroom training and four hours of practice on the forklift. Training includes forklift safety, handling and moving loads, principles of lifting, stacking and un-stacking loads and driving with a load. Upon completion of eight hours of training and meeting the requirements, student will receive an award of completion to take to their current or future employer. LBCC Baseball Program to Return

LBCC to re-establish baseball with focus on student success and community support Linn-Benton Community College will re-establish its baseball program next spring with an emphasis on the “student” in student athlete. The decision to again field a baseball team by the spring of 2015 came after months of discussions and work with community members to create a program structure that fosters high completion rates among student athletes and generates significant involvement of the community in supporting the program. A yet-to-be determined women’s sport will be added by the 2015-16 season to create gender equity among LBCC’s athletic programs. Currently, the college fields teams in women’s volleyball and men’s basketball. “This plan, which uses athletics as a vehicle to promote student success and involvement, makes us very optimistic about the future of baseball and other sports at our college,” said LBCC President Greg Hamann. “We’re excited and grateful for the opportunity this represent

LBCC Call to Artists in Linn and Benton Counties

Linn-Benton Community College invites artists in Linn and Benton counties to submit work to be considered for “Poetry Birdhouses, Building Community,” part of an upcoming visual, active art display at the college. Five local artists will be selected to artistically embellish birdhouses made of cedar, which will be provided. No entry fee for submissions. Cash awards of $500 will be allocated to each selected artist to help cover expenses. The poetry birdhouses will be installed as permanent exterior art for LBCC’s Albany campus. Media considered must be appropriate for exterior landscape, and able to withstand Willamette Valley weather. Deadline for submission is May 28. LBCC Oregon Construction Contractors Board Education

Oregon Construction Contractors Board Education (CCB) will be offered through the Small Business Development Center at Linn-Benton Community College. This five session course will meet on April 22, 29, May 6, 13, and 20 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., on the LBCC Albany campus, Calapooia Center room CC-213. The course is required for CCB licensing as part of the education requirement before taking the State of Oregon CCB exam. Participants are required to attend all five of the state-approved sessions to satisfy the educational requirement for Oregon contractor licensing. Topics include employer requirements and employee rights, Oregon lien and contract law, taxes/recordkeeping, best business practices, project and time management, estimating and scheduling, building codes, OR-OSHA requirements, job site safety, environmental laws, and test taking strategies in compliance with ORS 701-280.  Advance registration is required by April 18. LBCC Hosts Poet, Playwright Darrel Holnes

Poet, producer and playwright Darrel Alejandro Holnes will give a reading at Noon Wednesday, April 16 at Linn-Benton Community College’s Forum building, room F-104, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW, Albany. An award-winning poet and playwright from Panama City, Panama, Holnes holds degrees in Creative Writing from the University of Michigan and the University of Houston. Holnes’ poems have been featured in Callaloo, Journal of African Diaspora, Occupy Wall Street Poetry Anthology, The Paris-American, The Prague Review, The Queer South, and other prestigious journals and presses. A writer, educator and activist, Holnes is the recipient of scholarships to Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, Cave Canem, CantoMundo and the VCFA Postgraduate Writer’s Conference. This event is free and open to the public, and sponsored by LBCC’s Gay-Straight Alliance, Diversity Achievement Center, and Council of Clubs, with a grant from LBCC’s English Endowment Fund.

Social Media Class at Benton Center

The class “Social Media” will be held at Linn-Benton Community College’s Benton Center starting April 29. Staying in touch with friends, family and co-workers has never been easier. LBCC/OSU Degree Partnership Information Sessions

Information sessions on the LBCC and OSU Degree Partnership Program will be held April 15 and 24 at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Bvld. SW, Albany. Learn about this partnership program that allows students to access classes and services at both LBCC and OSU. Financial aid information will be available. LBCC Offers RT130 Fire Safety Refresher Course

A fire line safety refresher course for wild land firefighters and forest service workers will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College April 27. The RT130 Fire Safety Refresher is for workers who have an Incident Command System qualification that requires fire-training certification. Learn to recognize and mitigate risk, maintain safe and effective practices, reduce accidents and near misses, and practice deploying new generation fire shelters. Class will meet Sunday, April 27 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the LBCC Albany campus, Calapooia Center, room CC-211, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW. Cost is $95, or $80 per person if more than three from one company. Students must have completed S-130 and S-190 training. Tender Operators need no prior training. LBCC SSH Gallery Features Ekphrasis II Exhibit

Students and staff of Linn-Benton Community are celebrating National Poetry Month in April with Ekphrasis II, an exhibit of poetry and paintings at the South Santiam Hall Gallery at LBCC, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. The exhibit, with features 27 paintings in a variety of media along with the poems that inspired them, will be on view through May 2. A reception and book release will be held in the gallery Tuesday, April 15, from 3 to 4 p.m., when the poets will read from their work and be available to sign copies the exhibit catalog. In her artist's statement for the exhibit, Kierra Lynn, LBCC's student poet laureate, writes: “The art of ekphrasis is the process of using grand description and rhetoric to represent a work of art. In the case of this project, the poems were created first, leaving the artist to render a visual interpretation from the words upon the page. A picture may be work a thousand words--but h
