LBCC Student Authors Highlighted at Reading Event

Linn-Benton Community College writing instructor C. Lill Ahrens will host a reading of several LBCC student’s published works Thursday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. at Grass Roots Books and Music, 227 SW 2nd St, Corvallis. Since first being offered in 2004, several students from LBCC’s Community Education class “Writers' Workroom” have seen their writing become award-winning published works. LBCC student authors attending the reading are Jois Jean Bousquet, Lisa Burchett, Michael Coolen, Harry Demarest, Gary Gibson, Linda Elin Hamner, Ken Holt, Valerie Lake, Genny Lynch, Lois Rosen, Dee Roy, Patricia Smith, Nancy Weber and Dick Weinman.   Albany writer Lois Jean Bousquet writes fiction and nonfiction. Her essays have appeared in three anthologies, and her work in progress includes a mystery series whose protagonists are tenderly based on elders she’s known. Learn how to photograph people or paint with oils in classes held this winter through Linn-Benton Community College Benton Center Community Education. Photographing People teaches the art of taking outstanding photographs of people including informal, candid, formal and posed portraits. Two French language classes will be offered started January 13 through Linn-Benton Community College’s Benton Center Community Education. French, Beginning I emphasizes everyday conversation and grammar for students with little or no previous knowledge of French. Class will meet Tuesdays starting Jan. 13 from 5:30 to 6:50 p.m. at Corvallis High School, 1400 NW Buchanan Ave, Corvallis. LBCC Student Finds Memoir-Writing Class Life-Enhancing

Maryke Desjardins Marÿke Desjardins was eight years old when American troops from Camp Adair, Oregon liberated her small South Holland town from five years of German occupation at the end of World War II. “The Timberwolves liberated us October 30, 1944, and we were so happy! I handed out apples to the soldiers as they marched through our town. For so many years after I moved to America, I looked for a soldier who was there that day,” said Desjardins. Desjardins moved from Holland to New Zealand, then to Arizona, Minnesota, Montana and finally Oregon. “When I moved to Albany, a young man in one of my Bible classes said, ‘My dad was in the Timberwolves and he was in the Netherlands.’ I said, ‘Oh, I have to meet him, if he’s still alive.’ And he is; he still is today. The family took me to lunch and we talked. I brought them some tulips and Dutch chocolates. He showed me papers from the 104th Infantry Division, and there was my hometown that they had marched through. It was very excit...

LBCC Benton Center Community Education Language Classes

A variety of foreign language classes will be offered to members of the community through Linn-Benton Community College Benton Center Community Education starting January 5.  Learning new languages can be helpful when traveling, communicating with foreign guests or even to enhance memory retention. Courses include: Mandarin Chinese, French, German, Italian, Russian, Spanish and Sign Language. All courses are offered in a variety of levels and include a focus on conversation.
