LBCC Professional Development Class

The professional development class Influencing Negative Attitudes will be held Tuesday, July 17 from 8 a.m. to Noon in the Linn-Benton Community College Fireside room, CC-211. This workshop offers techniques for working with people who have a negative attitude. Even though we cannot control the actions and attitudes of another person, we can skillfully influence them in such a way that gives them more choices in their actions. LBCC NSH Gallery Exhibit “Transitions”

          “Transitions,” an exhibit by four Linn-Benton Community College art students and graduates, is on display in the college’s North Santiam Hall Galleries through Sept. 10.             The artists are Johnny Beaver of Lebanon, Kevin Lyon of Albany, Miriam Morrissette of Corvallis and Jessie Barnhouse of Alsea.   All four are also members of the Temporary Artists Guild in Corvallis.             The more than 40 paintings on display are done in oil, acrylic and mixed media on canvas and paper. According to the artists’ statement: “These works show the power that art has to bring different people with different ideas and outlooks together in harmony.”             A public reception will be held Tuesday, July 31, from 12 to 3 p.m. in the NSH second floor atrium.             The NSH Galleries are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.                     

LBCC Volleyball Clinic for 6th–9th Graders

LBCC will hold a Summer Volleyball Clinic August 7, 8 and 9 for girls and boys who are entering grades six through nine. The clinic will provide three days of three-hour sessions that includes instruction on the all aspects of the game including serving, passing, hitting, setting, blocking and defense. The clinic will be held at the LBCC Activities Center gym, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Grades six and seven will meet from 9 a.m. to Noon, and grades eight and nine will meet from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Cost for the clinic is $60 if registered before July 15, and $75 after. The professional development class Improving PerformanceWith Practical On-the-Job Training Skills will be held Tuesday, July 10 from 8 a.m. to Noon at Linn-Benton Community College in the Fireside room, CC-211, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. It has been estimated that more than 80 percent of critical competencies of a job are learned on-the-job. Too often employees are being asked to train their colleagues on new technologies, products or skills without having the tools needed to effectively plan, deliver and evaluate training. Don’t leave this important training to chance.   When done well, OJT can be very effective for the learner and rewarding for the trainer. Learn how to identify characteristics of adult learners and learning styles and their impact on training, explore a five-step model for learning something new, and analyze a task so you can chunk information and skill practice for maximum return. Make Your Own Photobook Class

Make Your Own Photobooks will be offered through LBCC Albany Community Education beginning June 27. Learn how to take your photos beyond your home computer and publish to a photobook, including how to upload photos, design, edit and publish. Wilderness Survival Class

The class Wilderness Survival will be offered through LBCC Albany Community Education on Saturday, June 30. Learn how to be fully prepared in the unpredictable outdoors. The class is designed for the backpacker, hiker, hunter, ATV’er or back country traveler.   Review the basics of equipment, clothing selection and the skills needed to prepare for travel and emergency situations, and learn the basic planning elements to consider in advance of your journey outdoors. LBCC Honors Distinguished Alumni

William Summers Loyal Burns Loyal Burns and William Summers were honored with Linn-Benton Community College’s Distinguished Alumni Award at its Commencement held June 14. Burns, a Lebanon resident, is director of Information Technology at Veterinary Service Inc. (VSI), an animal health distribution company in Albany. He earned an associate degree in Agricultural Business Management at LBCC in 1991, and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree at Oregon State University in the same subject. Summers, an Albany resident, is the Workforce Analyst for the Oregon Employment Department in Albany. He earned an associate degree from LBCC in 1993, and continued on to OSU where he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics. Burns serves as a board member for the Pacific International Junior Livestock Show, is a member and past president of the Oregon Purebred Sheep Breeders Association, is president of the Northwest Montadale Breeder’s Association, and is a 4-H Leader in Lin

LBCC Lebanon Center Computer Application Classes

Are you a novice computer user who would like to learn basic computer skills?   The LBCC Lebanon Center is offering two beginning computer classes this summer. "Computers-First Step" is designed for those who have never touched a computer and want hands-on, step-by-step instruction. This easy-paced class includes identifying and using the various parts of the computer, using the mouse and keyboard, and introduces Windows 7 with a brief introduction to email and the Internet. This four-week, non-credit class will meet on Tuesdays from 6 to 8:50 p.m. at the Lebanon Center, 44 Industrial Way, beginning July 10. Cost for the class is $45 plus a $3 lab fee. LBCC Family Connections USDA Child Care Food Program

The Family Connections departmen t at Linn Benton Community College serves as the USDA Child Care Food Program sponsor for Linn, Benton, Lane and Douglas counties. The USDA food program reimburses child care providers for some of the meals and snacks they serve children, as well as offers helpful information on good nutrition. If you care for children in your home you may be eligible to take part. Joining the USDA food program is easy and free. Choir Holds Rummage & Plant Sale Fund-raiser

The LBCC choirs will hold a rummage and plant sale on Saturday, June 23 and Sunday, June 24 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in front of Takena Hall on the southwest side of the Linn-Benton Community College Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW.   Items for sale will include athletic equipment, memorabilia, furniture, clothing and lots of miscellaneous wares. In addition, a large selection of nursery plants will be priced for quick sale, courtesy of a donation by Evergreen International based in McMinnville. All proceeds from the sale will help fund the choir student’s trip to London where they will perform as part of a mass choir in the pre-Olympic festivities. Benton Center Language Classes

Taking a trip abroad this summer? Learn the basics of French and Italian in these classes offered at the LBCC Benton Center starting June 25. Learn the essentials of conversational French in the class French for Travelers. The class will focus on the vocabulary most needed in tourist situations. Best for those with some prior knowledge of the language, but prior study is not required to take the class. This five-week, non-credit class will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 to 11:50 a.m. starting June 25 at the LBCC Benton Center, room BC-106, 757 Polk Ave NW, Corvallis. Benton Center Class “Urban Chickens-Yes You Can!”

Learn how to keep chickens in your backyard in the class “Urban Chickens - Yes You Can!” offered through the LBCC Benton Center. Find out how keeping chickens in your urban setting can be easy, fun and a great way for families to learn basic small livestock skills. Class covers ordering chicks, breed characteristics, care, housing, feeding and basic medical care. Class will take a field trip to the instructor's own urban coop. This one-day is appropriate for ages 10 and up, with a parent. Water Environmental Technology Program Teams-Up With the City of Albany to Bring Water to the Horticulture Green Houses

Students in LBCC’s Water Environmental Technology program got to see first-hand how to do vertical boring for water line installation during a class demonstration Thursday morning. But what started out as a plan to do a practical demonstration with the City of Albany soon became a real project with a win-win for both the students and the college. George Van Keulen, head of LBCC’s facilities grounds crew, and Ron Sharman, WET department chair, put their heads together and found a way to benefit both the students in the program while providing much needed water lines for the college's horticulture program green houses. Van Keulen and Sharman contacted Stefan Seiter, horticulture program chair, and, along with Jeff Kinney, water systems manager with the City of Albany, they arranged to run water lines to the two green houses located in the horticulture program’s garden as part of the demonstration. LBCC's 44th Annual Commencement Ceremony

The 44th annual Linn-Benton Community College Commencement Ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 14 at the Linn County Fair and Expo Center in the Willamette Event Center in Albany. Graduates should plan to arrive no later than 5:45 p.m. at the Santiam Building behind the Expo Center. Doors open for seating at 6 p.m. No tickets are needed to attend the ceremony. No strollers, space is limited. LBCC will award 979 degrees and certificates to 850 candidates this year, and 83 students completed LBCC’s General Educational Development preparation program and will receive their certificates at commencement. A traditional bagpipe processional will be lead by the Portland Metro Pipe Band, with posting of the colors by the American Legion Travis Moothart Post 184 of Brownsville.
