The 9th annual “Unity Celebration” will be held at Linn-Benton Community College Wednesday, February 28 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Fireside Room, Calapooia Center room CC-211, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. The free event recognizes people and organizations whose work establishes unity and inclusivity while promoting diversity and social justice on the college campus and in the community. This year’s guest lecturer is Frank Thompson, former superintendent of the Oregon Department of Corrections and the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty. LBCC Poetry Club will also perform. Awards given include The Analee Fuentes Unity award, presented to an LBCC student, a staff member and a faculty member; and the Gary Westford Community Connection award presented to an individual or organization. Faculty Art Exhibit in South Santiam Hall Gallery. Linn-Benton Community College faculty members Dori Litzer, Analee Fuentes, Andy Myers, Kathryn Cellerini Moore, Deanne Beausoleil, Lewis Franklin and Frossene King will exhibit their work in the South Santiam Hall Galleries at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 SW Pacific Blvd, Albany through Oct. 30. A reception and artist talk is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 23, from noon to 1 p.m. in the South Santiam Hall Gallery. The faculty show includes a strong and diverse body of work, from large oil paintings by Dori Litzer to intricate collages and monoprints by Analee Fuentes. Small linoleum block prints by Fuentes will be available for sale during the show, benefiting the Oregon Latino Scholarship Fund. SSH Gallery admission is free and open to the public weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 


“The Great Chicano Artist (after Courbet)” by Alfred J. Quiroz Oil on birch panel Artist Alfred J. Quiroz will speak about his work at the Corvallis Art Center from from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10. A painter and mixed-media artist from Arizona, Quiroz’s narrative paintings have been exhibited both nationally and internationally. His work was selected for inclusion in Contemporary Chicana and Chicano Art: Artists, Works, Culture, and Education (Tempe, AZ: Bilingual Review/Press, 2002), the St. James Guide to Hispanic Artists (Farmington Hills, MI: St. James Press, 2002), and in Redefining American History Painting (New York: Cambridge University Press, 1995). In 1988, Quiroz received the Arizona Artist Award from the Tucson Community Foundation. He also received Visual Arts Fellowships from the Arizona Commission on the Arts in 1989 and 1994, and from the Tucson-Pima Arts Council in 1996 and 2000. The visual art faculty at Linn-Benton Community College are opening the 2012-13 Fall Term with their annual exhibit in the South Santiam Hall and Calapooia Center galleries on LBCC’s Albany Campus. Featured in the show are oil paintings and drawings by Department Chair Dori Bartholomew Litzer; charcoal drawings by Analee Fuentes; large-scale oil paintings by Gary Westford; wood-fired ceramics by Jay Widmer; photographs by Kurt Norlin; and lithographs by Frosene King. Also on view are photographs by gallery coordinator Rich Bergeman. The exhibit runs through Oct. 31. The gallery is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Featured in the show are several colorful oil paintings by Department Chair Dori Bartholomew Litzer; recent watercolor paintings, photographs and mixed-media by Analee Fuentes; large-scale oil paintings by Gary Westford; and wood-fired ceramics by Jay Widmer from his 2011 Alsea Anagama firing. Also on view are pastel concept drawings of “A Christmas Story” by performing arts instructor Dan Stone, and platinum photographic prints by gallery coordinator Rich Bergeman.
