LBCC Annual Art Student Juried Show in NSH Gallery

More than 50 art works by 34 student artists are on view at the Annual Art Student Juried Show in the North Santiam Hall Galleries at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW, Albany. 
A reception and awards ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, May 8, from noon to 1 p.m., in the NSH second floor atrium. Juror Yuji Hiratsuka, a renowned print-maker and professor of Art at Oregon State University, will be on hand to confer over $2,000 in cash prizes and gift certificates from donors and area merchants.

 The annual juried show was open to all students who have taken art classes at the college during the 2012-13 academic year. The media on exhibit include paintings in oil, watercolor and acrylic; drawings in graphite, charcoal, and pastel; photography; ceramics and mixed media. The exhibit runs through June 7. The NSH Gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Integrate Word, Excel & PowerPoint Class

Learn how to integrate Word, Excel & PowerPoint in this computer class held through LBCC Albany Community Education beginning May 2. Review primary software features, create connections between programs, and combine into reports and presentations for efficient access to data and information. Basic computer experience needed. This four-week class will meet on Thursdays from 6:30 to 9:20 p.m. beginning May 2 in McKenzie Hall, room MKH-211, LBCC Albany campus, 6500 SW Pacific Blvd. Cost for this one-credit class is $96 with a $2 lab fee. Everything Chocolate Class

Chef Adrienne Ewanchyna will hold an afternoon class Everything Chocolate Saturday, June 1 from noon to 3:30 p.m. at Linn-Benton Community College Albany campus, Calapooia Center room CC-219. Learn how to make a variety of chocolate desserts, confections and garnishes in this non-credit class. Cost for the class in $29 with a $20 lab fee.  Preregistration is required. Just for Fun Piano Workshop

A “Just For Fun Piano” workshop will held on Saturday, May 4, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Instructor Donn Rochlin specializes in teaching adults a creative and unique approach to learning and re-learning to play the piano. The workshop is designed for beginners as well as seasoned players. Learn how to play any song, any style, using chords. Rochlin’s philosophy is that when students have fun learning and see positive results from the start, they are inspired to stick with it, become self-motivated and eager to take on more advanced information. Linn-Benton Opera Guild Preview: Falstaff

The Linn-Benton Opera Guild will preview the opera Falstaff, by Giuseppe Verdi, on Tuesday, May 7 at 7:45 p.m. at 303 Benton Hall, Oregon State University campus, Corvallis. OSU music professor Angela Carlson will tell the story of the opera and play recorded excerpts from the score. Admission is free to Linn-Benton Opera Guild members, students of Linn-Benton Community College and OSU. Cost for the general public is $5. Performance dates will be May 10, 16, and 18 at 7:30 p.m. and May 12 at 2 p.m. at the Keller Auditorium, 222 SW Clay, Portland. The opera will be sung in Italian with projected English translations. Tractor & Farm Machinery Safety Training

Tractor and Farm Machinery Safety training will be held at Linn-Benton Community College’s Albany campus June 13 -15. Geared for farm workers ages 14 to 18, the course is developed and operated with the assistance of the OSU Extension Service in accordance with federal regulations. Students and parents must sign a Liability Waiver/Indemnification form within 24 hours of registration. The three-day class session will meet Thursday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. beginning June 13. Cost for this non-credit class is $76.50 plus a $20 lab fee. LBCC Lebanon Center AARP Driver Safety Program

AARP Driver Safety Program is being offered through Linn-Benton Community College starting May 6.  AARP’s program is designed to help develop and reinforce safe driving skills and techniques. Satisfactory completion of this class may qualify you for reduced auto insurance premiums (check with your insurance carrier). An introductory Apple iPad and Kindle Fire class will be offered through the LBCC Sweet Home Center beginning May 1. Explore features and learn the core functions and settings. Search, download and use practical and fun applications. This four-week class will meet Wednesdays from 3 p.m. to 4:40 p.m. at the Sweet Home Center, 1661 Long St. Cost for this class is $39 plus a $2 fee. Adults age 62 and above are eligible for a 25 percent reduction in tuition. Reduction does not apply to fees. LBCC is offering a hands-on Intro to Digital Photography class that will cover basic features of digital cameras and basic photo editing such as sizing and cropping.  Computer skills recommended. Vice President Bruce Clementsen Receives International PTK Award

Bruce Clemetsen, vice president of Student Services at Linn-Benton Community College, received the "Distinguished College Administrator" award from the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at its international convention held in San Jose April 4. Clemetsen was one of only 25 community college leaders to receive the award.  “We felt it was important to recognize Dr. Clemetsen because of his mentorship and support of PTK students on campus,” said Michelle Hoopiiaina, president of the LBCC PTK chapter, which nominated Clemetsen for the award. On the national level, the award recognized Clemetsen’s work around student completion and his efforts to work with honor roll students as peer mentors, part of a national movement by PTK toward student completion. The Distinguished Administrator award is given to community college administrators (vice presidents, deans, etc.) based on outstanding support provided to Phi Theta Kappa over the years. LBCC Receives $50k Drive Oregon Grant

Linn-Benton Community College received a $50,000 grant from Drive Oregon , part of a matching grant program designed to accelerate the growth of Oregon’s electric vehicle industry. The grant will support the purchase of an advanced dynamometer for LBCC’s new Advanced Transportation Technology Center located in Lebanon. The grant is part of six projects totaling $179,926 from Drive Oregon . John McArdle, LBCC Foundation development director, says the college values the connections it is making in Oregon’s growing electric vehicle industry. “This grant will help us meet the growing demand for people who are qualified to develop and maintain electric vehicles and other advanced transportation equipment,” said McArdle. Lester Erlston, CEO of KersTech in Beaverton, noted that his company plans to work in partnership with LBCC to conduct dynamometer testing of its compound motor. LBCC LMT Workshop

The workshop “Hand, Wrist and Elbow” for Licensed Massage Therapists will be held Saturday, June 1 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Linn-Benton Community College’s Business and Employer Services . Learn to identify and address specific issues such as carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow and hyper-mobility issues. Includes hands-on, integrated understanding of how myofascial restrictions affect the functional mechanics of the hand, wrist and elbow.

LBCC Student to Participate in ASRT Educational Symposium

Kelly Solberg, a radiologic technology student at Linn Benton Community College, has been selected to participate in the American Society of Radiologic Technologists 2013 Student Leadership Development Program. Solberg, a Eugene resident, was one of 61 students chosen from more than 130 entries submitted by radiologic science students from around the country. She is in her second year in the LBCC Diagnostic Imaging program. Solberg will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the ASRT Educational Symposium and Annual Governance and House of Delegates Meeting, June 13-16, in Albuquerque, N.M. LBCC Offers Free Tutor Training Workshop

Learn how to become a volunteer tutor for adults to improve their reading, writing, or English language skills through the Linn-Benton Community College Literacy Tutor Program. A free tutor training workshop will be held at LBCC Friday, April 12 at 1 p.m. in the Luckiamute Center building, room 116, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. LBCC tutors assist students that may be enrolled in the GED program, English for Speakers of Other Languages classes, or that come from local communities but are not otherwise enrolled at the college. LBCC and Majestic Theater Call for Participants for Play In a Day

Linn-Benton Community College and the Majestic Theater are calling for playwrights, actors and directors to participate in a 24-hour, ten-minute, Play-in-a-Day to be performed Saturday, May 25 at 7:30 p.m. at the Majestic. Playwrights, directors and actors will write, rehearse and perform six original plays created and rehearsed within a day. This fast-paced event provides opportunities to work with and meet lots of people. LBCC Offers QuickBooks Classes

Learn the basics of QuickBooks in classes offered through Linn-Benton Community College Small Business Development Center. Guided Tour QuickBooks is a four-hour class designed for those with no previous experience using a computer-based accounting system.  Class will meet Tuesday, April 23 and Thursday, April 25 from 2 to 3:50 p.m. in the LBCC Forum building, room F-202, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. LBCC English Faculty Present Spring Light

Spring Light: Readings and Other Delicacies will be held at the LBCC Benton Center Friday, April 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the center lobby, 757 NW Polk Street, Corvallis.  This event is a benefit fundraiser for the LBCC English Scholarship/Program Endowment supporting student scholarships, student writing and enrichment and visiting authors. LBCC Musical Revue “Life is a Cabaret”

LBCC’s Performing Arts Department will present the musical revue “Life is a Cabaret” Thursday, April 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the LBCC Forum building, room F-104, Albany campus. LBCC Offers Free Chronic Conditions Program Workshop

A free workshop on “Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions Self Management Program” will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College starting April 25. This six-week workshop is for people with ongoing health conditions such as diabetes, asthma, emphysema, heart conditions, high blood pressure, MS and other chronic health conditions. LBCC Oregon Construction Contractors Board Education

Oregon Construction Contractors Board Education (CCB) will be offered through the Small Business Development Center at Linn-Benton Community College. This five-week course will meet Tuesdays from 6 to 10 p.m. starting April 30 at the LBCC Albany campus, Calapooia Center room CC-211. The course is required for CCB licensing as part of the education requirement before taking the State of Oregon CCB exam. Participants are required to attend all five of the state-approved sessions to satisfy the educational requirement for Oregon contractor licensing. LBCC Offers Fire Safety Refresher Course, RT130

A fire line safety refresher course designed for wild land firefighters and forest service workers holding Incident Command System qualifications requiring fire-training certification will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College on Sunday, April 28. The RT130 Fire Safety Refresher trains participants to recognize and mitigate risk, maintain safe and effective practices, and to reduce accidents and near misses. Students will practice deploying new generation fire shelters. LBCC Calapooia Gallery Exhibit: Jessie Barnhouse

Paintings by Jessie Barnhouse of Alsea are on display through May 3 in the Calapooia Center Gallery at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany, Ore. A former fine art major at LBCC, Barnhouse is exhibiting five new pieces done in oil, watercolor, acrylic, encaustic and spray paint in various combinations. Barnhouse is a member of the Temporary Artists Guild and is also known for her work in clay and jewelry, which she sells at the Eugene Saturday Market. She attended Southern Oregon University after graduating from Alsea High School in 1997, left school to raise a family, and began taking classes at LBCC in 2008. “After several years spent working and raising my boys, I found myself at LBCC and back on the path of going to school for art,” she said. “I love to learn and experiment with new ways of expression. That’s probably why I found putting together a collection for this show so difficult; too many directions and no ‘voice,’ at least not yet.” The Calapooia
