LBCC Call for Volunteer Facilitators

Volunteers are needed to facilitate small group training sessions for students in varied health care and medical fields. No medical experience needed. A free information session and facilitator training will be held Thursday, Sept. 24 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at LBCC’s Vineyard Mt. Room, Calapooia Center, room 213, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Health care students in the fields of pharmacy, medical assisting, nursing, physician and public health from Linn-Benton Community College, Comp-NW Medical School and Oregon State University will meet in small, interdisciplinary group sessions to work on communications skills. Volunteer facilitators help guide the students through real-life case scenarios during each session. Sessions are designed to help students communicate and work together across their varied medical disciplines. Facilitators should be prepared to commit to approximately 15 hours of volunteer time during the sessions, which will be held October 2015 through April 2016 at LBCC

LBCC Students Awarded $5,000 Oregon Space Grant Scholarships

Five Linn-Benton Community College students were awarded $5,000 scholarships from the Oregon NASA Space Grant Consortium, part of Oregon State University. The students and their majors are Hazel Betz, physics; Aaron Groves, physics; Brian Riedy, engineering; Brianna Smith-Sparks, physics; and Levi Willmeth, computer science. Catherine Lanier, associate director of OSGC at OSU, wrote in an email announcing the winners, “We had a significant increase in the number and quality of applications this year, making the award selections very competitive and difficult. There were many deserving students!” Scholarships were awarded to 12 community college students, 15 university students, and seven undergraduate research projects throughout the state. LBCC Students Named to OCCA All-Oregon Academic Team

Charly Hemphill Governor John Kitzhaber and the Oregon Community College Association will honor two students from Linn-Benton Community College in April as part of the OCCA All-Oregon Academic Team .   Charly Hemphill, a networking and systems administration major from Sweet Home and Jeff Lehn, an accounting technology major from Albany, will be honored at a luncheon with the Governor, where each will receive a plaque from the OCCA and a $1,000 scholarship from the university they plan to attend after graduating from LBCC. Hemphill is a member of the LBCC  Jeff Lehn chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, and serves on the LBCC’s Student Life and Leadership Council. He plans to transfer to Oregon State University to complete his bachelor’s degree. Lehn currently serves as senior vice president of LBCC’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter, and plans to transfer to OSU to complete his bachelor’s degree. LBCC Holds College Night Open House

Thinking about attending college or looking to improve your job skills? Plan to attend College Night at Linn-Benton Community College Monday, Feb. 4 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW. Visit with faculty advisors about LBCC programs and explore your career options. Learn how to finance your college career and how you can earn college credits while still in high school. A showcase featuring theater, music, short-term training programs and more will be presented from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Forum building, room F-104. LBCC SSH Gallery Exhibit Shows Corvallis Artists

"Place & Time," Frossene King "Mobil Homes," Andy Myers “Place,” a multi-media exhibit by Corvallis artists Frossene King and Andy Myers, is on exhibit in the South Santiam Hall Gallery at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW, in Albany, through Dec. 7. A reception for the artists will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the SSH Gallery on Monday, Nov. 26. King is an adjunct instructor in digital imaging at LBCC; Myers teaches drawing at LBCC’s Benton Center and at Oregon State University . King is exhibiting work from two projects that explore how visual qualities, data and associations are essential ingredients in creating meaning in visual communication. “Meditations and Symbols” is based on the view outside her window over a six-month period, and “Decoding The Life of Lula” is a story of “displacement and discovery” inspired by her grandmother’s experiences as a Greek immigrant to the United States. LBCC Receives $20k grant for Reverse Transfer Program with OSU

LBCC will receive $20,000 as part of a $450,000 two-year grant program awarded to the state of Oregon. The “Credit When It’s Due: Recognizing the Value of Quality Associate Degrees” grant is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Helios Education Foundation, Kresge Foundation, Lumina Foundation and USA Funds. LBCC’s portion of the grant will be used to help build its Reverse Transfer Program with Oregon Statue University , part of a new pilot program between Oregon’s public community colleges and universities offering students the option to obtain an associate’s degree after transferring to university. This past summer, LBCC and OSU took the first steps to implement the program, allowing students who are enrolled in the college’s degree partnership program to be awarded an associate’s degree from LBCC upon completion of equivalent courses at OSU. LBCC, Lebanon High School & OSU to Sign MOU

An agreement between Lebanon High School and Linn-Benton Community College, in partnership with Oregon State University to provide a better path and support from high school through college graduation, will be signed at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 30 at the LBCC Lebanon Center. The Lebanon High School Early College memorandum of understanding establishes an accelerated program that will allow Lebanon High School students to simultaneously complete their high school diploma and earn an associate degree – which will make them eligible to attend OSU and apply for a $3,000 scholarship. LBCC Hosts OSU Faculty Exhibit in NSH Gallery

An artist reception will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 20 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the second-floor atrium of the NSH Gallery. This is the inaugural exhibit in what will become an annual series of shows at LBCC’s NSH Gallery featuring the art faculty from Oregon’s six state universities. The OSU show demonstrates a dynamic diversity of styles and approaches to the making of art.
