LBCC Offers Wildland Firefighting Training

Basic Wildland Firefighting Training will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College starting April 25 at the LBCC Albany campus, 6500 SW Pacific Blvd. This five-day class is designed to provide entry-level firefighter skills and includes a full day of field training. Class instructor is certified with the National Wildfire Suppression Association. Learn to assist in the suppression of wildfires including digging firelines, removing fuels, laying hoses and how to provide assistance in national emergencies. Course curriculum meets or exceeds the National Wildfire Coordinating Group 310-1 requirements. Participants must be 18 years of age or older, in good physical condition and must have two forms of government-issued identification. Class size is limited. Register early. "The Remains of Turmoil" by Susan Johnson A reception and gallery talk featuring four women artists will be held Thursday, April 10, from 1 to 2 p.m. in the North Santiam Hall Galleries at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. The NSH Gallery is exhibiting the four women artists from Corvallis, Albany, Portland and Salem through April 18. “Write Your Legacy Letter” class will be held at Linn-Benton Community College’s Benton Center starting March 31. Learn how to write your personal values, life’s lessons, and hopes in this form of letter writing that is given to family and friends at life’s transition points such as marriage, childbirth, graduation, illness, retirement and end of life planning. LBCC Holds Annual Career Fair

A free Career Fair will be held at Linn Benton Community College Wednesday, April 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Activities Center gym, Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd. S.W. LBCC Creative Home Workshops

Learn a new craft or improve on your skills in a creative home workshop held at LBCC’s Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers this spring. The 10-week"Knitting/Crocheting Workshop" will meet Tuesdays from 9 to 10:50 a.m. at the LBCC Lebanon Center beginning April 1. Work on your own projects while you learn techniques. Class is designed for both beginning and accomplished knitters and crocheters. Cost is $58. A five-week "Quilters Workshop" meets each term on Thursdays from 7 to 7:50 p.m. at LBCC’s Sweet Home High School beginning April 3. Learn to create a different quilt pattern each term. LBCC Offers Driver Education Classes Spring Term

Registration is open for Driver Education courses for spring term through Linn-Benton Community College Albany Community Education. The course includes Oregon State mandated 30 hours of classroom instruction, a three-hour parent/student orientation at first meeting plus 12 hours behind-the wheel practice and driver observation. First class session starts March 31. Registration requirements include completed packet, fee, original driver permit and one photocopy. Registration packets are available at all centers one week prior to registration or online at www.linnbenton.edu/driver-education. Cost for the course is $259 for ages 17 and under, $429 for ages 18 and over. Students under the age of 18 may qualify for, upon successful completion of the course, a waiver to waive the in car skills testing when obtaining their Driver’s License.  Class must be dropped 24 hours prior to start date for refund. LBCC Tractor and Farm Machinery Safety Class

Tractor and Farm Machinery Safety training will be held at Linn-Benton Community College’s Albany campus, with the first session beginning March 26. Geared for farm workers ages 14 to 18, the course is developed and operated with the assistance of the OSU Extension Service in accordance with federal regulations. Students and parents must sign a Liability Waiver/Indemnification form within 24 hours of registration. The first three-day class session will meet Wednesday thru Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. beginning March 26. The second three-day session will meet Monday through Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. beginning June 30. Cost for this non-credit class is $96.50. Preregistration is required. LBCC Lebanon Center Class: Playing Music Together

The class "Playing Music Together" will be held at Linn-Benton Community College’s Lebanon Center starting April 2. Designed for stringed instrument players, this class focuses on the skills needed to play bluegrass, country and old time music with others. Learn to play backup and lead, review basic chords and jam etiquette, and how to improvise and put vocals together. LBCC Pesticides Applicator Class

Pesticide Laws and Safety classes will be held through the Small Business Development Center at Linn-Benton Community College. Designed to prepare senior agriculture workers to take the State of Oregon Department of Agriculture pesticide applicator exam, classes provide in-depth training, including extra coaching in math and calibration skills.  Pesticides Laws and Safety, Public and Commercial applications, will be held April 3 and 4 from 8 a.m. to noon at LBCC’s Calapooia Center, room CC-213, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW. LBCC Lebanon Center AARP Driver Safety Program

AARP Driver Safety Program is being offered through Linn-Benton Community College April 7 and 8. AARP’s program is designed to help develop and reinforce safe driving skills and techniques. Satisfactory completion of this class may qualify you for reduced auto insurance premiums (check with your insurance carrier). LBCC MicroBiz Explore and Prepare Classes

The class MicroBiz Explore will be held through the Small Business Development Center at Linn-Benton Community College beginning April 8. Explore the possibilities of starting your own business. Topics include how to register your business, how to determine pricing, how to find customers and more. Learn how to refine your business plan and get started. This class, “Ballet Core” will be held at Linn-Benton Community College’s Benton Center starting April 3. A combination of ballet, Pilates, and yoga helps develops strength, flexibility, and balance. Using precision, flow and a full range of motion to build strength while creating the lean, graceful lines of a dancer. Ballet Core involves simple ballet exercises, Pilates core strengthening exercises, and yoga postures for stress release and relaxation. No previous experience required. LBCC Named Large Business of the Year by Lebanon Chamber

Linn Benton Community College received the Large Business of the Year award from the Lebanon Area Chamber of Commerce during its Lebanon Distinguished Service Awards banquet held March 11. LBCC has a dual presence in Lebanon with its East Linn County Center and the Advanced Transportation Technology Center. Gary Price, regional director of Linn County Centers, and Bryan Schiedler, automotive technician faculty member and department chair, accepted the award on behalf of the college. “It was an honor to accept an award that so many of us, past and present, have contributed to,” wrote Schiedler. Nearly 350 people attended the awards banquet held at the Samaritan Center in Lebanon. Two levels of “Tai Chi for Health” will be held at the Linn-Benton Community College’s Benton Center starting March 31. This sun-style Tai Chi program is safe and beneficial for those with chronic conditions or limited mobility and can reduce pain, stiffness, and fatigue. LBCC Lebanon Center Health Classes

Classes to help you live a healthier life are being offered through Linn-Benton Community College’s Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers this spring. The class  "Pain Relief Now" introduces self-help techniques for relief of musculoskeletal pain, and addresses pain symptoms in your muscle groups and joints and for arthritis. Learn active isolated stretch techniques to enhance joint function and return to a more useful movement pattern. LBCC Class Explores 2014 Shakespeare Festival

The class “In Depth View: Shakespeare Festival 2014” will be held at Linn-Benton Community College’s Benton Center starting April 2.   Learn how to make the most of your festival going experience in this five-week class covering the 2014 Oregon Shakespeare Festival season.  Class will cover Shakespeare play history, past OSF productions, and the challenge of producing 300-year-old plays for a contemporary audience. Instructor Robert Leff, long time festival attendee and American theatre historian, provides play backgrounds and discussions with a historical and performance point of view. LBCC Calapooia Gallery Features Student Artist

LBCC art major Rosalie Lingo, a Corvallis resident, is exhibiting a selection of her paintings in the Calapooia Center Gallery at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 SW Pacific Blvd., Albany through April 18. On view are eight figurative pieces from Lingo's illustrated stories, which she has titled “Consumption.”  “I have tried to combine archetypes with pieces of my own experiences to create snapshots of human lives,” she explains.  “This group of paintings, drawings and mixed-media pieces seeks to create an album that draws from different life circumstances.” Originally from Salem, Lingo plans to transfer from LBCC to Oregon State University to study graphic design or applied visual arts. LBCC Life Stories Class

The writing class “Life Stories” will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College Community Education starting April 2. Learn how to write your family history descriptively and in your own narrative style. Information on how to publish will be provided. LBCC Offers Real Estate Pre-License Broker Exam Course

Real Estate Pre-License Broker Exam course will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College starting April 2. Designed to prepare you for the Oregon Real Estate Brokers License Exam, this 150-hour course is the fastest way to qualify to take the state exam. The local real estate market is beginning to turn around. Now is the time to position your self for the up-turn.  This 11-week course will meet on Wednesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. beginning April 2   at the LBCC Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW. Course content will be mostly Internet based. Students are expected to have on-line capability, to self-study and attend all class sessions. A mandatory all-day study session will be held on Saturday, June 7 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cost for this non-credit course is $695. LBCC Students Named to OCCA All Oregon Academic Team

Governor John Kitzhaber and the Oregon Community College Association will honor two Linn-Benton Community College students as part of the OCCA All Oregon Academic Team.   Alisha Haskett, networking and systems administration major from Sweet Home and Willard W. Hucks III, accounting technology major from Albany, will be honored at a luncheon with the Governor April 22. Both will receive a plaque from the OCCA and a $1,000 scholarship from Oregon State University, where they plan to transfer to earn a bachelor’s degree after finishing at LBCC. The Oregon Community College Association, in partnership with Phi Theta Kappa, recognizes outstanding students yearly from Oregon’s community colleges through the All Oregon Academic Team awards.

Nominations Open for Distinguished Alumni Award

Nominations are being accepted through April 1 for the Linn-Benton Community College Distinguished Alumni Award. The award is open to former LBCC students who have demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in their profession or through service to their community, and who have completed at least 36 credits at LBCC. Linn-Benton Opera Guild Preview: Postcard From Morocco

The Linn-Benton Opera Guild will preview the opera Postcard From Morocco , by Dominick Argento Tuesday, March 18 at 7:30 p.m. at 303 Benton Hall, Oregon State University campus, Corvallis. OSU music professor Angela Carlson will tell the story of the opera and play recorded excerpts from the score. LBCC NSH Gallery Features Four Oregon Artist

Susan Johnson "The Remains of Turmoil" Four women artists from Corvallis, Albany, Portland and Salem will share the walls of the North Santiam Hall Galleries March 10 through April 18 at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. “Susan Johnson and Friends” features the work of Johnson, a long-time Corvallis oil painter and former director of the Corvallis Arts Center; Eileen Cotter Howell, a watercolorist from Salem and co-founder of Portland's Art in the Pearl Festival; Kathy Haydon, an established painter and collage artist who lives in the Portland area; and Heather Kier, an emerging artist from Albany who has begun exhibiting around Oregon in recent years. LBCC Lebanon Center - GED/Adult Basic Education

GED and Adult Basic Education classes will be held starting the week of March 31 at Linn-Benton Community College Lebanon Center, 44 Industrial Way and the Sweet Home Center, 1661 Long St. Develop your skills in reading, writing or math to improve your score on the Computerized Placement Test or to prepare for the GED test. Free one-day orientations will be held at each center. LBCC “Chance Dance” Performance Benefits Art on Campus

The benefit dance performance “Chance Dance” will be held at Linn-Benton Community College Friday, March 14 at 7 p.m. in the LBCC Russell Tripp Performance Center, Takena Hall, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. “Chance Dance” is a collaborative performance bringing together a community of artists, with proceeds benefiting the LBCC Art and Aesthetics Resource Team to bring art to the LBCC campus. Area choreographers will use expressive movement, poetry and music to design 10 dances based on numbers and chance as expressed through the styles of African, ballet, ballroom and contemporary dance. Participants include the Rainbow Dance Theatre and other area performers. Tickets are $10 advance general admission, $8 for students, and $10 at the door. LBCC Offers Real Estate Property Manager Course

Real Estate Property Manager course will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College beginning March 31. Designed to prepare you to manage rental property, this course combines online and in-class instruction to meet the 60-hour requirement for the Oregon Property Manager Pre-License course. This seven-week class will meet on Mondays from 6 to 8 p.m. beginning March 31 through May 12 at the LBCC Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW. Cost for this non-credit course is $550. LBCC Tractor and Farm Machinery Safety Class

Tractor and Farm Machinery Safety training will be held at Linn-Benton Community College beginning March 26. Geared for farm workers ages 14 to 18, the course is developed and operated with assistance from OSU Extension Service in accordance with federal regulations. Students and parents must sign a Liability Waiver/Indemnification form within 24 hours of registration. Two course sessions will be offered, with the first session beginning March 26 and the second session beginning June 30. Sessions meet Wednesday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. at LBCC’s Albany campus, Forum building room F-113, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW. Cost for this non-credit class is $96.50. LBCC Driver Education Registration Begins March 7

Registration for Drivers Education held at Linn-Benton Community College’s Albany, Corvallis and Sweet Home campuses begins March 7. Approved by the Oregon Department of Transportation, LBCC’s course includes state mandated 30 hours of classroom instruction, a three-hour parent/student orientation at first meeting, plus 12 hours behind-the wheel practice and driver observation.  Registration requirements include completed packet, fee, original driver permit and one photocopy. Registration packets are available at all centers or online at www.linnbenton.edu/driver-education. Students must register in person at one of the campuses. No online registration available. Cost for the course is $259 for ages 17 and under, $429 for ages 18 and over. For refund, class must be dropped 24 hours prior to start. Classes start March 31.
