The Linn-Benton Community College Board of Education will discuss the college budget at its next regularly-scheduled board meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, January 17 in the LBCC Calapooia Center, room CC-103, Albany. Discussion will include budget projections for the upcoming years, the general direction of college spending, revenue assumptions, and major expenses. Tuition and fees will be covered at the February 21 board meeting, which will be voted on by the board at its March meeting. LBCC Board of Education meetings are open to the public, with time allotted for public comment.

Members of Linn-Benton Community College’s Part-Time Faculty Association ratified their first contract, which the LBCC Board of Education approved at a special meeting Thursday, Dec. 8. The contract increases LBCC part-time faculty salaries to the average of Oregon community colleges of similar size as LBCC before the end of the four-year contract term. The contract also includes enhancements in sick leave, tuition waivers and retirement contribution provisions. The contract agreement was reached after two sessions with a mediator, and took just over a year to negotiate – a relatively quick timeline for an initial contract. The LBCC Board of Education voted Wednesday to approve a tuition rate increase of 6 percent for both in-state and out-of-state, and 8 percent for international, effective summer term 2016. The increase will be used to help cover current program expenses, expand services, and help develop an ending fund balance of 10 percent. After two years without an increase, the projection for future tuition increases includes a 5 percent increase next year, and 3 percent annual increases after that. In-state tuition for 2016-17 school year will be $99.43 per credit hour, up from $93.80. Out-of-state tuition will be $231.12, up from $214, and international tuition will be $282.02, up from $251.80. The Linn-Benton Community College Board of Education is seeking applicants to fill a board vacancy for the position of Zone 6-7. Zone 6-7 includes Corvallis and some of the surrounding areas. Applicants must live within the zone to be considered. The person appointed would serve the remainder of the position’s term, through June 30, 2017. BC in blue, new property in green. The LBCC Board of Education approved a $3 million agreement to purchase property for the Benton Center project to provide 20,000 square feet of additional classroom space and increase parking to meet current and future demand at the center. The property, at 931 NW Reiman St. in Corvallis, includes about two-and-a-half acres and a 12,000-square-foot building.  The property is currently leased by First Student, which uses it for parking and maintenance of school buses. Contingencies of the deal include working with First Student to find an acceptable place to relocate their operation, and for LBCC to work with the City of Corvallis to determine possible zoning issues. If either of those issues is insurmountable, the sale could be canceled. The college estimates the site will allow for more than double the parking space for the center, and the existing building also provides new options for expansion of classroom space.

Linn-Benton Community College Board of Education conferred an honorary degree to former Oregon State University administrator Bob Bontrager, Ph.D., to recognize his leadership in developing the LBCC and OSU degree partnership program. Established in 1998, the LBCC-OSU partnership is, by far, the largest partnership program in Oregon. At any given time, more than 2,000 students are jointly enrolled in LBCC and OSU, allowing for a broader range of class choices and services, and the opportunity to make education more affordable. Bontrager, of Corvallis, served as OSU’s director of Admission and Orientation, and as assistant provost for Enrollment Management from 1996 to 2005.
