Job Fair Set for Veterans and Disabled Individuals

A job fair for veteran’s and individuals with disabilities will be held Friday, Oct. 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Linn-Benton Community College’s Commons cafeteria, Calapooia Center building, 2nd floor, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Attending businesses are seeking individuals to hire. Community and campus resources will also be available to assist with employment and resource information. Businesses include ATI Wah Chang, Samaritan Health Services, Comcast, Cascade Pulp, Knife River, U.S. Forest Service and more. LBCC Hosts “Community Ground v.2” Exhibit

South Santiam Hall Gallery More than 25 art faculty from Clatsop, Mt. Hood and Linn-Benton community colleges are exhibiting their work at the LBCC Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW, through December 6. “Community Ground v.2” fills three galleries on campus, with over 100 works of art in a wide array of media, including painting, ceramics, metal-smithing, photography, drawing, mixed media and installation art.  The traveling exhibit is intended to celebrate the work of teaching artists and the role their art plays as a source of inspiration to their students and the community.  The exhibit at LBCC is the second of three shows that grew out of collaboration between the three colleges. The first show was held at Clatsop last January, and the third will be held at Mt. Hood in 2014. Dr. Shakti Butler Dr. Shakti Butler will lead a discussion on racial inequality and the impact on communities Wednesday, Oct. 9, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Linn-Benton Community College’s Forum lecture hall, room F-104, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Dr. Butler, founder and creative director of World Trust Services, is producer and director of "Cracking the Codes: Understanding the System of Racial Inequity" as well as the documentaries "The Way Home" and "Light in the Shadows and Mirrors of Privilege: Making Whiteness Visible.” Dr. Butler will lead a dialogue and reflection on how racial inequalities have impacted us as a society and as a community. Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers Gardening Classes

Learn gardening tips and techniques in one of several gardening classes held through Linn-Benton Community College Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers this fall. Tips for Successful Gardening will be held at the LBCC Lebanon Center, 44 Industrial Way, from 6 to 7:50 p.m. beginning Oct. 10. Cost for this three-week class is $39. The free Fall Gardening lunch time series will meet at the LBCC Sweet Home Center, 1661 Long St, from Noon to 12:50 p.m. beginning Oct. 3. A different topic will be covered each week for eight weeks. Pesticide Application Classes

Pesticide applicator classes will be held through the Small Business Development Center at Linn-Benton Community College. Designed to prepare senior agriculture workers to take the State of Oregon Department of Agriculture pesticide applicator exam, classes provide in-depth training, including extra coaching in math and calibration skills. Pesticides Laws and Safety, Public and Commercial applications, will be held Oct.11 and 12 from 8 a.m. to noon at LBCC’s Calapooia Center, room CC-210, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW. Cost is $99. Pesticide Private Applicator will be held Oct. 24 from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and Oct. 25 from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at LBCC’s Calapooia Center, room CC- 213. Cost is $99.

LBCC Preschool Cooperative

Fall term enrollment is underway for Linn-Benton Community College’s Preschool Cooperative in Philomath. Preschool classes meet Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings beginning Sept. 30 at Clemens Primary School, 535 S. 19th St., Philomath. The cooperative program focuses on high-quality learning experiences for 3-5-year-olds; with parents taking an active part in their child's learning by working in the classroom and helping to plan activities. LBCC’s Foundation Donates $150k for Dynomometer

Linn-Benton Community College’s Foundation donated $150,000 to the college’s Advanced Transportation Technology Center for purchase of a dynamometer to use in its new automotive training center. The dynamometer diagnostic tool used in automotive service will be the only one of its kind between Vancouver, BC and San Francisco. LBCC Announces Distinguished Staff, Pastega Awards

Stephen and Carolyn Lebsack received the Pastega Faculty Excellance Award, and Teresa Thomas (r) received the Pastega Classified Excellence Award. Linn-Benton Community College announced Distinguished Staff and Pastega award winners at the college’s Inservice held Sept. 17. Alice Sperling was named Distinguished Staff. Established in 1980 to recognize employees for their contribution of both time and energy to the college, nominees must have completed 10 years of continuous employment with LBCC. Sperling, of Tangent, began work at the college in 1995 as an instructional assistant. She held several positions before becoming faculty coordinator for the LBCC Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence in 2005. She retired from the college in June.  Nominated by her peers for her dedication and commitment to LBCC, students and the community, Sperling is lauded for her ability to teach others to teach, listen and communicate effectively. LBCC Veterinary Assistant Information Sessions

Veterinary Assistant Program information sessions will be held at Linn-Benton Community College for those interested in training to become a Veterinary Assistant. Free pre-application sessions will be held Monday, Oct. 7, 1-3 p.m.; Wednesday, Oct. 9, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.; Tues. Oct. 22, noon-2 p.m.; and Thursday, Nov. 7, 9-11 a.m. at the LBCC Albany campus, Calapooia Center room CC-212. No preregistration needed to attend. Attendance at the information session is mandatory in order to take the program. The 17-week LBCC Veterinary Assistant Program starts Jan. 6 and runs through May 2, 2014. Learn self-help techniques for pain relief in the class Pain Relief Now held at Linn-Benton Community College starting Oct. 1. Address pain symptoms caused by Trigger Points in muscle groups, stiff and sore joints, and arthritis. Practice Active Isolated Stretch techniques to enhance joint function and return "locked" joints to a more useful movement pattern. Santiam Kalapuya Indians History Class

Explore the life-ways of the Santiam Kalapuya Indians prior to Caucasian settlement in this history class held Monday and Tuesday, October 7 and 8. The first day of class will be at the LBCC Sweet Home Center, 1661 Long St, from 1 to 2:50 p.m. and cover pre-history of the people of Western Oregon, including archaeological evidence, early settler accounts and Kalapuya-era replica artifacts. The second day will be a fieldtrip to Cascadia Cave from 10 a.m. to 1:50 p.m. The cave is an important site to Santiam Kalapuyans, and we will examine traditional cultural resource areas and discuss restoration opportunities. Students must supply their own transportation to Cascadia State Park. Bring lunch, water, camera and field clothing appropriate for rain and mud. Lebanon Center New Class: Playing Music Together

The class Playing Music Together, designed for stringed instrument players, will be offered at LBBC’s Lebanon Center starting Oct. 2. Gain confidence in your skills as you learn to play bluegrass, country and old time music with others. Learn about playing backup and lead, review basic chords, jam etiquette and how to improvise and put vocals together. LBCC Offers QuickBooks Classes

Learn the basics of QuickBooks in classes offered through Linn-Benton Community College Small Business Development Center. Guided Tour QuickBooks is a four-hour class designed for those with no previous experience using a computer-based accounting system.  Class will meet on Tuesday, October 1 and Thursday, October 3, from 2 to 3:50 p.m. in the LBCC Forum building, room F-202, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Cost for this non-credit class is $69.   QuickBooks I class is designed to help you set up an accounting system using QuickBooks 2013. LBCC Fall Term Cooking Classes

Learn how to make sausage, decorate a cake or cook Moroccan food in classes held this fall at Linn-Benton Community College. The nine-week Cake Decorating class will meet Mondays from 6:30 to 8:20 p.m. starting Sept. 30 at the Albany Senior Center, 44 Water Ave.  Learn simple techniques to get professional looking results. Cost is $69 with a $7 supply fee. The three-week Hint of Morocco cooking class will meet Fridays from 6 to 8:50 p.m. starting Oct. 4 at the Albany Senior Center. LBCC Driver Education Begins Sept. 21

Drivers Education classes at Linn-Benton Community College begin Sept. 21. The course includes Oregon state mandated 30 hours of classroom instruction, a three-hour parent/student orientation at first meeting plus 12 hours behind-the wheel practice and driver observation.  Registration requirements include completed packet, fee, original driver permit and one photocopy. Students must register at the college. Online registration is not available. Registration packets are available at all centers one week prior to registration or online at www.linnbenton.edu/driver-education . Cost for the course is $259 for ages 17 and under, $429 for ages 18 and over. Class must be dropped 24 hours prior to start date for refund. LBCC Lands $2.7 million Grant to Develop Virtual College

Linn-Benton Community College has landed a $2.7 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to develop a new online virtual college program. LBCC will receive $2,739,655 for the project, which will initially target healthcare and business programs at LBCC, with additional areas to follow based on industry needs. The grant, part of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training grant program, is a multi-year, nearly $2 billion initiative to expand targeted training programs for unemployed workers, especially those impacted by foreign trade. Community colleges and universities around the country were awarded $474.5 million for the development and expansion of innovative training programs. LBCC’s project is the only one in Oregon to receive funding in this third installment of the initiative. Learn how to tell your story and your family history in the “Life Stories” class offered through LBCC Community Education.

 Recall and recount treasured family history in your own narrative style. Learn how to write descriptively with details and dialogue. Information about publishing will be provided.

LBCC Oregon Construction Contractors Board Education

Oregon Construction Contractors Board Education (CCB) will be offered through the Small Business Development Center at Linn-Benton Community College. This five-session course will meet October 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29, from 6 to 10 p.m. at the LBCC Albany campus, Calapooia Center room CC-213, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW. The course is required for CCB licensing as part of the education requirement before taking the State of Oregon CCB exam. Participants are required to attend all five of the state-approved sessions to satisfy the educational requirement for Oregon contractor licensing. LBCC Holds Welcome Day Event

Linn-Benton Community College will hold a “Welcome Day” open house Wednesday, Sept. 25 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW. Activities will be held in the college courtyard throughout the day including choir and theater performances, poetry reading and live music, and campus groups, clubs and community organizations will have displays. A fashion show will be held in the Commons cafeteria at noon with free pizza. Students can enter a drawing to win prizes, including a 60-second shopping spree at the college bookstore. LBCC Offers Real Estate Property Manager Course

Real Estate Property Manager course will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College beginning September 30. Designed to prepare you to manage rental property, this course combines online and in-class instruction to meet the 60-hour requirement for the Oregon Property Manager Pre-License course. LBCC is offering free Pharmacy Technician Program pre-application information sessions for those interested in training to work as a Pharmacy Technician.

 The sessions will be held Wednesday, Sept. 25, 1-3 p.m.; Tuesday, Oct. 1; 11 a.m.-1 p.m.; Monday, Oct. 28, 9-11 a.m.; and Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2-4 p.m. at the LBCC Lebanon Center, 44 Industrial Way, Lebanon, OR.

LBCC Just for Fun Piano Class

"Just for Fun Piano" will be held Saturday, Sept. 28 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Albany Senior Center, 489 Water Avenue NW. Taught by Portland pianist and composer Donn Rochlin, this workshop is designed for beginners as well as seasoned players. Rochlin teaches an easy, no stress way to learn to play the piano. LBCC Small Business Management Class

The LBCC Small Business Management Program for small business owners will be held beginning October 10. The SBM program includes classroom learning sessions, one-on-one confidential meetings with a SBM coach, and an informal support group of other SBM business owners, focusing on tools and techniques that have been proven to help businesses streamline and grow. SBM is a nine-month program that meets the second Thursday of each month, from 1 to 4 p.m., October through June. LBCC Call for Volunteer Facilitators

Volunteers are needed to facilitate small group training sessions held at Linn-Benton Community College for students in varied medical fields. No medical experience necessary. Students from Linn-Benton Community College, CompNW Medical School and Oregon State University will work together in small, interdisciplinary group sessions, including students in the fields of pharmacy, medical assisting, nursing, public health, physician and veterinary science. Volunteer facilitators will help students work through real-life case scenarios during each session. Sessions are designed to help students learn to communicate and work together across their varied medical disciplines. LBCC Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers Art Classes

A variety of art classes will be offered this fall through Linn-Benton Community College’s Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers. The class "Watercolor Foundations” will meet Mondays beginning Sept. 30 from 5:30 to 7:50 p.m. at the Lebanon Center, 44 Industrial Way, and from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at the Sweet Home Center, 1661 Long St. Class will also meet at the Brownsville Art Association Studio, 255 Main St., Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:50 p.m. beginning Oct 3. Cost for this eight-week class is $65. "Calligraphy" class will be held at the Sweet Home Center Tuesdays from 1 to 3:20 p.m. beginning Oct. 1. Cost for this 10-week class is $64. LBCC Microbusiness Explore and Prepare Classes

The class Microbusiness Explore will be held through the Small Business Development Center at Linn-Benton Community College beginning Sept. 24. Explore the possibilities of starting you own business. Topics include how to register your business, how to determine pricing, how to find customers and more. Learn how to refine your business plan and get started. A free orientation for the class will be held Tuesday, Sept. 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the LBCC Benton Center, room BC-107, 757 Polk Ave., Corvallis. The 11-week class will meet Tuesdays from 6 to 8:50 p.m. beginning Sept. 24. Cost is $349. Some scholarships are available. In addition, the class Microbusiness Prepare will begin Sept. 18. LBCC Lebanon Center Lunch & Learn Series



A free Lunch and Learn series will be held at the Lebanon Senior Center, 80 Tangent Street, from 12:30 to 1:50 p.m. beginning Sept. 23.

 This series covers local historical places of interest. Topics include: Cottonwoods Ballroom, Sept. 23; Willamette Valley Pleistocene Project, Sept. 30; Oregon Donation Land Claim Pioneers, Oct. 3; History of Spiritualism and Spirit Photograph, Oct. 7; Log of the Dirty Four, Oct. 21; Scroggins Mill, Oct. 28; and the Santiam Wagon Road, Nov. 4. LBCC Lebanon Center Free SHIBA Class

New to Medicare? Senior Health Insurance Benefits Assistance (SHIBA) is holding a free class that covers the basics of Medicare parts A, B, C and D. Class is designed for anyone who will be eligible or who is new to Medicare and for current beneficiaries who would like a better understanding of their Medicare benefits and options. Spouses and relatives are welcome to attend the class. This one-day class will meet Thursday, Sept. 19 from 10 to 11:50 a.m. at the LBCC Lebanon Center Annex building, 44 Industrial Way. LBCC Free Living with Chronic Conditions Program

The free workshop Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions Self-Management Program will be held at the LBCC Lebanon Center starting Sept. 19. This six-week workshop is for people with ongoing health conditions such as diabetes, asthma, emphysema, heart conditions, high blood pressure, MS, etc. Participants will meet Thursdays from 12:30 to 2:50 p.m. beginning Sept. 19 at the LBCC Lebanon Center Annex building, 44 Industrial Way. LBCC Real Estate Pre-License Broker Exam Course

A Real Estate Pre-License Broker Exam course will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College beginning October 2. Designed to prepare you for the Oregon Real Estate Brokers License Exam, this 150-hour course is the fastest way to qualify to take the state exam. The local real estate market is beginning to turn around, this position your self for the up-turn.   This 11-week course will meet on Wednesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. beginning Oct. 2 at the LBCC Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW. Course content will be mostly Internet based. Students are expected to have on-line capability, to self-study and attend all class sessions. A mandatory all-day study session will be held on Saturday, December 14 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cost for this non-credit course is $695. Utilities Donate More than $60k to ATTC

Consumer’s Power, NW Natural and Pacific Power have donated more than $60,000 to Linn-Benton Community College’s new Advanced Transportation Technology Center, which is located in Lebanon, Oregon. Linn-Benton Community College’s phlebotomy program is calling for volunteers for its annual public blood draw to help students meet their blood draw quotas before beginning work at clinical sites. Blood draws will be held Monday, Sept. 23 and Tuesday, Sept. 24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the college’s Lebanon Center, 44 Industrial Way, room 153. No need to register.
