LBCC Among 30 Chosen to Participate in AACC Pathways Project Building off work it has done over the past two years, LBCC has been invited, through a highly competitive national selection process, to join the Pathways Project led by the American Association of Community Colleges, one of 30 colleges across America with a shared commitment to implement guided academic and career pathways for all students. Guided pathways provide students the structure and support to measurably increase their chances of college completion and career success. LBCC and the other colleges will receive support funded through a $5.2 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Learn how to research your family history in the workshop “Discover Your Family History” offered through LBCC Community Education. Starting with documents and photos you already own, learn how to record the stories of your families’ journey, talents and courage, including tips on how to gather family stories, trace far-flung relatives, collect photos and documents, request public records, and use genealogy websites. LBCC Encouraging High School Seniors & GED Grads to Apply for Oregon Promise

Linn-Benton Community College is encouraging all eligible 2016 high school and GED graduates to apply for the Oregon Promise starting Nov. 1. Applications are available online at www.OregonPromise.org . Oregon Promise provides a minimum of $1,000 of tuition support for students who are graduating high school or earning a GED in the spring or summer of 2016, have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher (a GED score requirement is still being established), have been an Oregon resident for 12 months, and who intend to attend community college in fall of 2016. Students are being encouraged to apply early. The program is first-come, first served, with demand expected to exceed the funding available. Those who apply prior to funds being exhausted will get support. The program covers tuition that is not covered by federal and state financial aid grants. Most students will be required to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, and accept all grants they qualify for. Non U.S.

Event Planning Workshop: “Secrets to Planning a Successful Event”

An event planning workshop, "Secrets to Planning a Successful Event," will be held Friday, Oct. 30 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the LBCC Benton Center, Corvallis. Learn to plan a successful and memorable event including how to produce, manage, market, budgeting, program development, sponsorship, and how to add the "wow factor." Perfect for fundraisers, non-profits, event planners, or anyone responsible for planning a large event. Cost is $69. Lunch is on your own. Instructor Denise Rossetti has been producing events, large and small, for more than 20 years. She teaches the class “Special Event Planning” at the University of Oregon, and is a member of the Event Planners Association. New Class: Introduction to Facebook in Sweet Home

Learn how to use the popular social media site Facebook in the class “Introduction to Facebook,” a new class offered at the LBCC Sweet Home Center starting Nov. 5. Learn the basics of connecting with friends and family online, including how to establish a Facebook account and set up your profile for safety. Free Showings of film “Project 22” Nov. 6 & 7

Two free showings of the documentary film "Project 22" will be held Friday, Nov. 6 and Saturday, Nov. 7 at 4:30 p.m. at Linn-Benton Community College’s Russell Tripp Performance Center, Takena Hall, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. The film chronicles the 22-day, 6,500-mile journey of two combat-wounded veterans, Daniel Egbert and Doc King, who set out across America to raise awareness of the high rate of suicides amongst veterans.  Spurred by estimations that 22 veterans die by suicide each day, Project 22 includes interviews with veterans who have contemplated or attempted suicide, but who found help, support and hope in various ways. The film includes interviews with leading researchers in the fields of traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress, mental health clinicians and educators, and leading experts in warrior culture and combat stress. Dr. Greg Hamann Linn-Benton Community College President Dr. Greg Hamann was named “Pacesetter of the Year” at the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations District 7 conference Oct. 1. The award recognizes a president or CEO at a two-year community or technical college who has demonstrated leadership and support in the area of college communications and marketing. Hamann was nominated for his support of initiatives that improve the college’s image, including the backing of investment in research and design for LBCC’s award winning “Inspired” branding and redesigned web site, and for his support of implementing a system that communicates with prospective students. The nomination also noted Hamann’s work to bring a new focus on completion to the college, his work on state and national initiatives like Win-Win, Foundations of Excellence and Achieving the Dream, and in numerous partnerships with K-12, university and chambers of commerce partners, including the “Pipelin

A CPR certification class for healthcare providers will be held at Linn-Benton Community College Saturday, Nov. 7 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., Calapooia Center room 213, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. NSH Gallery Features Exhibit by Benton Center Art Faculty

An exhibit of work by three art instructors from Linn-Benton Community College’s Benton Center will be shown in LBCC’s North Santiam Gallery, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW, Albany through December 11.  A reception and gallery talk will be held Thursday, October 29, from 3 to 4 p.m. in the NSH second floor atrium. The exhibit represents a wide range of artistic approaches brought to the Benton Center art department by the three artists; from the colorful and diverse paintings by Mark Allison, to the expressive, monumental mixed media drawings of Andrew Myers, to the delicate, sophisticated, and whimsical ceramics of Renee McKitterick. McKitterick is the new ceramics instructor at the Benton Center, coming to Corvallis most recently from New Mexico, where she completed her MFA in 2012. This summer she did a residency in Jingdezhen, China studying ceramic and glazing techniques. Building projects connected to the passage of the college bond measure are starting to take shape, as the HOC, ATTC and culinary classroom projects move into the construction phase. Health Occupations Center: Site development has begun on the HOC, and building construction is scheduled to begin in January, with a completion date of fall 2016. ATTC: Construction of the ATTC Innovation Center is scheduled to begin in early 2016, once federal review of the project and bidding are complete. Project completion date is set for fall 2016.  Benton Center: The college is continuing to explore options for additional parking at the Benton Center. LBCC Holds Noche LBCC, Latino College Night

Noche LBCC, college night for Spanish speaking families, will be held at Linn-Benton Community College Thursday, Oct. 29 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the LBCC Commons cafeteria, 2nd floor Calapooia Center, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Learn about educational resources from pre-kindergarten through college, including a resource fair with information on GED, College Now, high school programs, family resources, Boys and Girls Club, Kidco Head Start and the Albany Library. Information on improving English language skills also provided. A student panel discussion will be held at 7 p.m., with college staff will be available to answer questions. LBCC Veterinary Assistant Information Sessions

Two free Veterinary Assistant Program information sessions will be held at Linn-Benton Community College in September and October for those interested in training to become a Veterinary Assistant. Sessions are Oct. 21 at 12 p.m., and Nov. 5 at 9 a.m. at the LBCC Albany campus, Calapooia Center, room CC-212. No pre-registration needed to attend. The 17-week LBCC Veterinary Assistant Program starts Jan. 4 and runs through April 29, 2016. Skill areas covered include basic education and experience in common disease states, commonly used medical and surgical techniques, and an introduction to hospital management, business procedures and radiation safety. LBCC Pharmacy Technician Information Sessions

LBCC is offering free pre-application information sessions for those interested in training to become a Pharmacy Technician. Sessions during fall term will be held on the following dates at LBCC’s Albany Campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd, Calapooia Center, room 212: Oct. 27, 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. Nov. 4, 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. The 18-week Pharmacy Technician training begins on Feb. 1 and runs until June 3, 2016 at LBCC’s Lebanon Center. Gain invaluable skills and knowledge in customer service, pharmacy law and ethics, pharmacy math, prescriptions, billing, insurance, the latest industry software, pharmacology, and on-the-job training. Performing Arts Presents “Theater of Terror: The Brothers Grimm”

LBCC Performing Arts presents the Halloween treat “Theater of Terror Presents: The Brothers Grimm” Oct. 29-31 at 7:30 p.m. at LBCC’s Russell Tripp Performance Center, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Join us for an evening of ghastly blood-curdling horrors, as we travel with a troupe of Victorian oddballs as they settle in for the night, sharing their favorite Brothers Grimm fairy tales, in the original macabre detail. Grimm’s fairy tales to be performed include: The Almond Tree, The Shroud and The Robber Bridegroom, stories of love, loss, revenge and redemption with a scary and gruesome twist.  Tickets are $10 general admission, $7 for students and seniors, and free to LBCC students with ID. Student Positions Open in the Foundation

Do you need a job? Are you taking at least six credits this term? The college Foundation office has several student positions open to help with college fundraising efforts.  Working hours are Monday through Thursday, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., with an occasional afternoon shift, contacting LBCC alumni by phone. The Foundation is also looking to fill three data entry positions for day shift hours. Positions begin Oct. 26 on the Albany campus, and include paid training.
