LBCC Centers Offer AARP Driver Safety Program

The AARP Driver Safety program will be offered at the LBCC Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers in January. The program is designed to help develop and reinforce safe driving skills and techniques. Satisfactory completion of this class may also qualify you for reduced auto insurance premiums. This two-day class will meet at the LBCC Sweet Home Center, 1661 Long St, Monday, Jan. 7 and Wednesday, Jan. 9 from 1 to 3:50 p.m., and at the Lebanon Senior Center, 80 Tangent St., on Thursday, Jan. 17 and Friday, Jan. 18 from 8:30 to 11:20 a.m. Cost for the class is $12 for AARP members, and $14 for non-members, collected at the first class. Lebanon Center Garden Classes

Winter gardening classes will be offered at the LBCC Lebanon Center, 44 Industrial Way, starting Jan. 9. The class Year-Round Gardening Winter will help you learn techniques for starting seedlings, early disease detection and protection of your winter vegetables. This three-week class will meet on Wednesdays from 1 to 2:50 p.m. beginning Jan. 9 at the center. Tuition is $39 plus a $2 fee. The free Winter Gardening Series offers a different topic each week and is taught by OSU-trained master gardeners. This eight-week series meets at the center on Thursdays from Noon to 12:50 p.m. beginning Jan. 10. Seniors age 62 and above are eligible for a 25 percent reduction in tuition.  Reduction does not apply to fees. LBCC New Years Fitness Classes

Lebanon Lunch & Learn Series

“New Year, New Trends” is the theme of the free Lunch and Learn series held at the Lebanon Senior Center, 80 Tangent Street, beginning Jan. 7. Topics include new technology, living a gluten-free life, television trends, diabetes education, fitness for older adults, diet and nutrition, adult safety and information about the new medical school. LBCC’s Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers will offer free sessions for students and parents interested in filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) . Lebanon Center Knitting/Crocheting Workshop

A Knitting/Crocheting Workshop will be held at the LBCC Lebanon Center, 44 Industrial Way, beginning Jan. 8. LBCC Small Business Management Program

The Small Business Management Program will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College for entrepreneurs who have been in business for at least one year and want to increase revenues and efficiencies. The course combines one-on-one business coaching, classroom sessions and peer networking to help your business be more successful. Course topics include strategy and goals, marketing basics and action plans, managing human potential, financial optimization, selling strategies, and operation and systems control. This nine-month class will meet on the second Wednesday of each month from 1 to 4 p.m. beginning Jan. 9 in the LBCC Calapooia Center building, room CC-211, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Nutcracker Dress Rehearsal

Legacy Ballet will perform the classic holiday production of “The Nutcracker” at Linn-Benton Community College’s Russell Tripp Performance Center Dec. 13 and 14 at 7 p.m., and Dec. 15 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets: $12 general admission. Fueling the Future – Driving Innovation When it comes to fueling our cars, how much we spend at the pump can drive us to seek better, cheaper ways to get to our destinations. Those cheaper, cleaner alternatives aren’t on the horizon –they are already here. Hybrid electric/gas motors, full-on electric motors, biofuels, propane, compressed natural gas, and hydrogen fuel cells are being developed and improved upon as viable alternatives to gasoline. Art Student Creates Conceptual Drawings for Larger-Than-Life Scenes in "The Nutcracker"

Life-sized fireplaces and chilly windows. These are just a few of the scenes created by LBCC art student Jessica Purkerson for Legacy Ballet’s upcoming performance of “The Nutcracker." Purkerson created the scenes after a request from theater manager Leslie Hammond. She had also helped create the large paper cutout masks used in last spring's children's play. This time, the challenge for Purkerson was to create scenes that would transfer well to a large backdrop. Purkerson was awestruck to see her conceptual 11-by-22 inch watercolors turned into 22-by-44 foot backdrops for the show. “It was so cool to see my paintings hanging from the ceiling,” Purkerson said of her watercolors, which hang in waiting in the Russell Tripp Performance Center in Takena Hall. Adult Basic Education classes will be held at LBCC’s Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers winter term to help you improve your skills in reading, writing or math, or prepare for your GED. Free orientations will be held at the Lebanon Center Jan. 7 and 8 from 9 to 11:50 a.m., or 6 to 8:50 p.m., and the Sweet Home Center Jan. 7 and 8 from 8:30 to 11:20 a.m., or from 6 to 8:50 p.m. Orientation is mandatory before registering for classes. There is a $30 enrollment fee due at registration. Driver Education Classes Winter Term

Several Driver Education classes are being offered winter term through Linn-Benton Community College Albany Community Education. The course includes Oregon state mandated 30 hours of classroom instruction, a three-hour parent/student orientation at first meeting plus 12 hours behind-the wheel practice and driver observation. First class session starts January 7. Registration requirements include completed packet, fee, original driver permit and one photocopy. Registration packets are available at all centers one week prior to registration or online at www.linnbenton.edu/go/albany-community-ed/driver-education . Cost for the course is $259 for ages 17 and under, $429 for ages 18 and over. Class must be dropped 24 hours prior to start date for refund. Free Tax Preparation Course for AARP Volunteers

Become a volunteer for AARP’s tax assistant program by taking the free Tax Preparation class offered through Linn-Benton Community College. Learn to assist seniors and limited income taxpayers in tax preparation, including information on federal and state income tax law. Attendees are expected to volunteer a minimum of four hours per week for the 10 weeks of tax season. Two class sessions will be offered, with the first starting Jan. 7 and the second starting Jan. 14. Each session will meet for one week, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 3:50 p.m. at the LBCC Calapooia Center, room CC-203, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. "Watercolor Foundations" will be offered at both centers. The Lebanon Center class meets on Tuesdays for eight weeks beginning Jan. 8 from 5:30 to 7:50 p.m. Cost for this class is $69 plus $3 Fee. This Sweet Home Center class will meet on Thursdays for five weeks beginning Jan. 10 from 6 to 7:50 p.m. Cost for this class is $39 plus $2 Fee.
