Approximately 70 area high school students signed letters of intent to attend LBCC next fall as part of the Career Technical Education Signing Day held February 16. LBCC was one of 40 colleges across the nation to participate in the National CTE Letter of Intent Signing Day , held to showcase young people who are committed to technical and industrial careers. Around 200 people attended the event, including industry representatives from both local and national businesses. High school seniors signed letters for their program of choice, which guarantees them a seat in the program for next fall. The Academic Foundations and Extended Learning division has been busy producing "I am LBCC" videos to highlight the unique strengths and experience of their team. This most recent video highlights ELA faculty member Françoise Howard, as she describes what it was like moving to a new country, and why the work she does is important to her. The video was edited by AFEL staff m

Foundations of Business Success starts April 11


Foundations of Business Success class will be held through the Small Business Development Center at Linn-Benton Community College beginning April 11. Learn how to create and assess a business plan for a start-up or new business in this 10 week course. Other topics include: financial management, pricing, cash flow, marketing, sales, legal topics, insurance needs, bookkeeping systems, market research, and exploring the lifestyle of a business owner. One-on-one advising included. A free orientation will be held Tuesday, April 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the LBCC, Calapooia Center, room CC-211. The 10-week class will meet Tuesdays from 6 to 8:50 p.m. beginning April 11. Cost is based on income. Early Bird discount: get $25 off fee for the first 10 people to sign up and pay by March 15. NSH Gallery Exhibits Paul Hawkwood Photographs

Intriguing photographs by photographer Paul Hawkwood, titled “Light, Gesture, and Mystery: Exploring the Domestic Wilderness” will be on display through March 17 in the North Santiam HallAtrium Gallery at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. In his solo exhibition, Hawkwood, a distinguished former LBCC English and writing instructor, takes viewers around the world to explore a visual awareness that extends beyond words. He strives to bring a distinct uniqueness to his work “in ways that are both artistic but unusual, so that the viewer’s attention is held and awakened.” By capturing color and shadow as aspects of light, his images possess spirit and emotion in their subject matter while enticing the viewer to search for a deeper meaning. SSH Art Gallery Holds Fundraiser Silent Art Auction

Donated by Ted Ernst A fundraiser exhibit “Silent Art Auction” of mixed-media paintings, drawings, and ceramics from LBCC faculty and community members is on display through March 1 in the South Santiam Hall Gallery at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. The annual fundraiser supports the Art Galleries on the LBCC Albany campus, which exhibit diverse artwork and artists while giving art students an opportunity to showcase their talent. Artwork up for auction was donated by Dori Litzer, Robin Evans, Anne Magratten, Sheryl Van Fleet, Debbie Vandersommen, Lynda Farmer, Ted Ernst, Matthew Williams, Renee McKitterick, Lewis Franklin and Cory Self. The silent auction will be open for bids until 12:45 p.m. March 1. Auction sheets are provided at each item. You can bid as often as you like. Item goes to highest bidder. The 8th annual “Unity Celebration” will be held at Linn-Benton Community College Wednesday, March 1 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Fireside Room, Calapooia Center room CC-211, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. The free event recognizes people and organizations whose work establishes unity and inclusivity while promoting diversity and social justice on the college campus and in the community. Awards given include The Analee Fuentes Unity award, presented to an LBCC student, a staff member and a faculty member; and the Gary Westford Community Connection award presented to an individual or organization. Dave Turin from Gold Rush Presentation Feb. 16

Dave Turin Dave Turin from the Discovery Channel’s Gold Rush series will give a free presentation at Linn-Benton Community College Thursday, Feb. 16 from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Forum, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Turin, from Gresham, is a former high school and college football star who graduated from Portland State University with a degree in civil engineering. While working as vice president of the family rock quarry business, Turin joined the Gold Rush series in 2011, after appearing as a guest in several episodes during season one. Turin will be keynote speaker at LBCC’s Career Technical Education Signing Day held at the college Feb. 16. The presentation is free and open to the public.
