Two Long-time Staff Members Retire with Combined 80-plus Years of Service With more than 80 years of combined service, long-time staff members Teresa Patterson and Paulette Myers are retiring, capping careers of 40 and 43 years respectively. Teresa started work as part-time, non-contract in the college registration office when she was 16, working through her junior and senior year at South Albany High School. Back then, the Registration office was in the Calapooia Center, where Human Resources is today. After graduating high school, Teresa was offered a full-time position in Registration, a job she held for 20 years before moving into her current position as IT Specialist with Information Services. Some of her coworkers call her the “Banner Queen,” since she was part of the original team that helped bring Banner online. Teresa’s last day was May 31, but she will continue to work...

If you missed the President’s Winter Forum on Thursday, Jan. 14, President Hamann covered several interesting topics, including the rollout of a new college budget model, which will be presented at the Board meeting Jan. 20. The new model will provide information to the board on college needs, and then guidance on how to go about funding those needs - a slightly different approach from the current budget model. A solution to the Benton Center parking and expansion project will also be presented at the board meeting. The project is projected to provide an additional 268 much-needed parking spaces at the center, along with an additional 20,000-square-feet of instructional space. President Hamann also shared that at the end of this year the college will no longer be part of Achieving the Dream, but will move instead to the new Guided Pathways partnership, which includes 30 community colleges nationwide. Javier Cervantes Javier Cervantes, director of the Department of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at Linn-Benton Community College, has received a certification of completion from the National Community College Hispanic Council Leadership Fellows Program. Cervantes, of Albany, works to prepare students, staff, faculty and local communities to live in an increasingly diverse society and workforce, and works on issues of equity, cultural fluency, capacity and competency, and increasing access and retention of underrepresented and diverse populations at the college level. “I am pleased to bring back a greater knowledge of how national issues in community colleges across America are really localized for LBCC,” said Cervantes. One in five K-8 students in the LBCC service district are Latino, noted Cervantes, and statistics show a greater stratification in achievement gaps for Latino students in colleges’ both nationally and locally. Established more than 20 years ago through the University of San Diego, the 10-day NCCHC Fellows Program provides training, preparation and support of Hispanic leaders in America's community colleges, providing an opportunity to continue in their professional growth. In his position at LBCC, Cervantes, of Albany, works to prepare students, staff, faculty and local communities to live in an increasingly diverse society and workforce, including working on issues of equity, cultural fluency, capacity and competency, as well as increasing access and retention of underrepresented and diverse populations at the college level.
