LBCC Offers Forklift Safety Training

Forklift Safety Training will be offered through Business and Employer Services at Linn-Benton Community College Saturday, Nov. 15, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the LBCC Albany Campus, IC-105, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. This eight-hour course will provide four hours of classroom training and four hours of practice on the forklift. Training includes forklift safety, handling and moving loads, principles of lifting, stacking and un-stacking loads and driving with a load. Upon completion of eight hours of training and meeting the requirements, student will receive an award of completion to take to their current or future employer. Buying and Selling Online Computer Class

Learn all about online shopping in the class “Buying and Selling Online” held through Linn-Benton Community College starting Nov. 17. Learn how to effectively use Craigslist, eBay, and Etsy, including how to create ads to attract buyers and other strategies to get results while protecting yourself as both buyer and seller. LBCC All Things Chocolate Cooking Class

A chocolate cooking class “All Things Chocolate” will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College starting Nov. 15. Just in time for the holidays, this fast-paced, hands-on class will cover how to cut, melt and temper chocolate while making ganache, truffles, and a variety of chocolate desserts, garnishes and confections. Bring containers to take home your chocolate goodies. This one-day class will meet Saturday, Nov. 15 from Noon to 4:50 p.m. on the LBCC Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW. Cost is $59. Social Media for Business Class

The class “Social Media for Business” will be held at the LBCC Lebanon Center starting Oct. 28. Learn how to use social media as an effective branding and marketing tool. Class will include an overview of the popular social media sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube, and Pinterest and how to best use those sites in your business strategy. LBCC Faculty Member Named Postsecondary Teacher of the Year

The Oregon Business Education Association named Linn-Benton Community College Business faculty member Nancy Noe as Postsecondary Teacher of the Year at its annual conference Oct. 10. Noe, of Albany, began her teaching career at LBCC in 2000, teaching office management and computer classes, and serving as Chair of the Business Technology Department, as lead advisor for the Legal Administrative Assistant program and Administrative Office Professional program, and as Business Technology representative for LBCC’s high school College Now program. Noe also serves as the lead chair for the Administrative Office Professional Statewide Consortium. Previously, she served as advisor for the Future Business Leaders of America advisor at Harrisburg High School and Sweet Home High School, and was an adjunct professor at Capella University. Noe earned a bachelor’s of science in business administration, finance and law at Portland State University, and a master’s degree in business education from Or

Degree Partnership Architect Receives LBCC Honorary Degree

Linn-Benton Community College Board of Education conferred an honorary degree to former Oregon State University administrator Bob Bontrager, Ph.D., to recognize his leadership in developing the LBCC and OSU degree partnership program. Established in 1998, the LBCC-OSU partnership is, by far, the largest partnership program in Oregon. At any given time, more than 2,000 students are jointly enrolled in LBCC and OSU, allowing for a broader range of class choices and services, and the opportunity to make education more affordable. Bontrager, of Corvallis, served as OSU’s director of Admission and Orientation, and as assistant provost for Enrollment Management from 1996 to 2005. After establishing the LBCC-OSU partnership, he went on to develop partnership programs between OSU and the rest of Oregon’s community colleges. “Bob inspired his colleagues at OSU and LBCC to see new ways of working together that removed barriers and built clear pathways to student success and completion,” said LBC

Pesticides Applicator Class in Spanish

Pesticide applicator class in Spanish will be held through the Small Business Development Center at Linn-Benton Community College. Designed to prepare senior agriculture workers to take the State of Oregon Department of Agriculture pesticide applicator exam, classes provide in-depth training, including extra coaching in math and calibration skills. Pesticide Private Applicator in Spanish will be held Nov. 6 from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and Nov. 7 from 8 am to 12:30 p.m. at LBCC’s Calapooia Center, room CC- 213. Cost is $99. Linn-Benton Opera Guild Preview: Die Fledermaus

The Linn-Benton Opera Guild will preview the opera Die Fledermaus, by Johan Strauss Tuesday, Nov. 4 at 7:45 p.m. at 303 Benton Hall, Oregon State University campus, Corvallis. OSU music professor Angela Carlson will tell the story of the opera and play recorded excerpts from the score. Admission is free to Linn-Benton Opera Guild members, students of Linn-Benton Community College and OSU. Cost for the general public is $5. Performance dates will be Nov. 7, 13 and 15 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. at the Keller Auditorium, 222 SW Clay, Portland. Opera will be sung in English with projections above the stage. NSH Gallery Exhibits Willamette University Art Faculty Work

Willamette University faculty members Andries Fourie, Alexandra Opie, James Thompson, Bethany Hays and Sarah Beadle will exhibit their work in the North Santiam Hall Galleries at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 SW Pacific Blvd., Albany through Dec. 5. A reception and artist talk is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 4, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the NSH Gallery second floor atrium. Fourie is showing mixed media work that explores the tension between flatness and dimensionality using found and fabricated objects. His work is concerned with issues of memory, identity, tradition and cultural hybridity in South African culture. Opie is exhibiting a series of tintype photographs, entitled Encounters. In these images, aspects of early portrait photography are examined in the present. Thompson’s series of landscape paintings are a response to “the landscape of my present and how the people of ancient Scotland and Britain were intertwined with their natural surroundings.” He is interested in the

Calapooia Gallery Exhibit with Angela Waetje. Corvallis artist Angela Waetje will exhibit her work in the Calapooia Gallery at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany through Oct. 30 Waetje earned her bachelor’s of Fine Art with an emphasis in printmaking from Oregon State University. On display are Waetje’s The Psychopomps series, which explores responses to death through the narrative of cultural creatures that guide one from this life to the next, and the Strange Deaths series, which chronicles actual and supposed deaths that involved unusual circumstances. Using the copper plate printmaking process, Waetje creates each image through a single copper plate that has been etched in acid, then altered through sanding, drawing and re-etching to be printed again with additional colors and imagery. The Calapooia Gallery is located on the first floor of the Calapooia Center building. Admission is free and is open to the public weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  SSH Gal

Faculty Art Exhibit in South Santiam Hall Gallery. Linn-Benton Community College faculty members Dori Litzer, Analee Fuentes, Andy Myers, Kathryn Cellerini Moore, Deanne Beausoleil, Lewis Franklin and Frossene King will exhibit their work in the South Santiam Hall Galleries at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 SW Pacific Blvd, Albany through Oct. 30. A reception and artist talk is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 23, from noon to 1 p.m. in the South Santiam Hall Gallery. The faculty show includes a strong and diverse body of work, from large oil paintings by Dori Litzer to intricate collages and monoprints by Analee Fuentes. Small linoleum block prints by Fuentes will be available for sale during the show, benefiting the Oregon Latino Scholarship Fund. SSH Gallery admission is free and open to the public weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Free Pharmacy Technician Information Sessions

LBCC is offering two free Pharmacy Technician Program pre-application information sessions for those interested in training to work as a Pharmacy Technician. The sessions will be held Tuesday, October 28 from 9-11:00 AM, and Wednesday, November 5 from 2-4 PM at the LBCC Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany, OR 97321. No need to preregister to attend. Attendance at the information session is mandatory in order to take the program. The 18-week Pharmacy Technician Program starts Feb. 2 and runs through June 5, 2015. Skill areas covered include customer service, pharmacy math, pharmacy law and ethics, pharmaceutical vocabulary, prescriptions, billing, insurance, industry software, pharmacology and on-the-job training. LBCC Holds Career Technical Education Open House

A Career Technical Education Open House will be held Friday, Oct. 24 from 4 to 7 p.m. at LBCC, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Explore Career Technical education programs that let you work with your hands and your brain. Learn about the skills you need to help you land a good job, in programs that take two years or less.  More than 50 associate degree and certificate programs that can be finished in two years or less will be showcased. Veterinary Assistant Free Information Sessions

Two free Veterinary Assistant Program information sessions will be held at Linn-Benton Community College in October and November for those interested in training to become a Veterinary Assistant. These pre-application sessions will be held Tuesday, Oct. 21 from noon to 2 p.m., and Thursday, Nov. 6 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the LBCC Albany campus, Calapooia Center, room CC-212. No preregistration needed to attend. Attendance at one information session is mandatory in order to take the program. The 17-week LBCC Veterinary Assistant Program starts Jan. 5, and runs through May 1, 2015. Artist Alfred J. Quiroz Speaks at Corvallis Art Center

“The Great Chicano Artist (after Courbet)” by Alfred J. Quiroz Oil on birch panel Artist Alfred J. Quiroz will speak about his work at the Corvallis Art Center from from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10. A painter and mixed-media artist from Arizona, Quiroz’s narrative paintings have been exhibited both nationally and internationally. His work was selected for inclusion in Contemporary Chicana and Chicano Art: Artists, Works, Culture, and Education (Tempe, AZ: Bilingual Review/Press, 2002), the St. James Guide to Hispanic Artists (Farmington Hills, MI: St. James Press, 2002), and in Redefining American History Painting (New York: Cambridge University Press, 1995). In 1988, Quiroz received the Arizona Artist Award from the Tucson Community Foundation. He also received Visual Arts Fellowships from the Arizona Commission on the Arts in 1989 and 1994, and from the Tucson-Pima Arts Council in 1996 and 2000. “Corks & Canvas: Find Your Inner Picasso!” watercolor class will be offered through the LBCC Benton Center and held at Lumos Wine Company Oct. 14 and 16. Beginners & Intermediate Cowboy Dance for Couples

Two levels of cowboy dance for couples, Beginners Cowboy Dance for Couples and Intermediate Cowboy Dance for Couples, will be held at Linn-Benton Community College starting Oct. 7. Beginner class covers cowboy two-step, swing, waltz, and cha-cha dancing.  Intermediate class is for those who already know two-step, waltz, and cha-cha, with more emphasis placed on turns, lead and follow, and other dance patterns. These dances work great in ballroom and swing dancing situations as well. You are encouraged to enroll with a partner. The beginner class will meet from 6 to 7:20 p.m., and the intermediate class will meet from 7:30 to 8:50 p.m. on Tuesdays starting Oct. 7 at the LBCC’s Albany Campus Activities Center gym, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW. QuickBooks Classes

Learn the basics of QuickBooks in classes offered through Linn-Benton Community College Small Business Development Center. Guided Tour QuickBooks is a four-hour class designed for those with no previous experience using a computer-based accounting system.  Class will meet on Oct. 14 and 16, from 2 to 3:50 p.m. in the LBCC Forum building, room F-202, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Cost for this non-credit class is $69.   QuickBooks I class is designed to help you set up an accounting system using QuickBooks 2013. This 10-hour class will meet Oct. 23 and 30, and Nov. 6, 13 and 20, from 2 to 3:50 p.m., in the Forum building, room F-202. Cost for this non-credit class is $195.
