Students Named to OCCA All Oregon Academic Team

Ilex Karstens Rebekah Pennington Governor Kate Brown and the Oregon Community College Association will honor two Linn-Benton Community College students as part of the OCCA All Oregon Academic Team.   Ilex Karstens, a pre-dental hygiene major, and Rebekah Pennington, a nursing major, both Albany residents, will be honored at a luncheon with the Governor and the other Oregon community college student winners at the state capitol April 30. Karstens is a four-point honor roll student who serves as an executive assistant for LBCC Student Government and is an active member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Roll Society. Pennington, also an honor roll student, serves as Phi Theta Kappa - LBCC chapter president, and serves as a member of the LBCC Student Leadership Council Judiciary Board and a CASA volunteer. 4th Annual “Celebration of A Cappella”

The 4th annual “Celebration of A Cappella” will be held Thursday, April 9 at 7:30 p.m. at Linn-Benton Community College’s Russell Tripp Performance Center, Takena Hall, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. The concert will feature a cappella performances by LBCC’s men’s group “Blue Light Special” and women’s group “The Sirens,” the University of Oregon’s “Mind the Gap,” South Albany High School’s “Rebelation,” and West Albany High School’s “Rhythmix.” Tickets are $5 general admission and will be available at the door. Pesticides Applicator in Spanish Classes

Pesticide applicator classes in Spanish will be held through the Small Business Development Center at Linn-Benton Community College. Designed to prepare senior agriculture workers to take the State of Oregon Department of Agriculture pesticide applicator exam, classes provide in-depth training, including extra coaching in math and calibration skills. Pesticide Laws and Safety in Spanish will be held April 9 and 10, from 8 a.m. to noon both days, at LBCC’s Calapooia Center, room CC-213. Cost is $99. Pesticide Private Applicator in Spanish will be held April 30, from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and May 1, from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., at LBCC’s Calapooia Center, room CC-203/205. Cost is $99. LBCC Announces Hire of New Women’s Basketball Coach

Debbie Herrold Women’s basketball returns to Linn-Benton Community College with the announcement of the recent hire of a new head basketball coach, Debbie Herrold.  The 53-year-old Herrold, of Tangent, held this same position in the past, serving as head women’s basketball coach for LBCC from 1987 to 1993. In 1991, Herrold’s team placed fifth in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community College tournament, and in 1999, she was inducted into the NWAACC Hall of Fame. Herrold has been a health and physical education instructor at LBCC for 28 years, and served as assistant coach for the college women’s basketball, cross-country and track teams. “I am humbled and excited to be given the opportunity to help start-up the return of the LBCC women’s basketball program,” said Herrold. “I have a great desire for this program to succeed, having been an athlete myself at LBCC and having prior experience as head coach. LBCC Offers QuickBooks Classes

Learn the basics of QuickBooks in classes offered through Linn-Benton Community College Small Business Development Center. Guided Tour QuickBooks is a four-hour class designed for those with no previous experience using a computer-based accounting system.   Class will meet on April 7 and 9, from 2 to 3:50 p.m. in the LBCC Forum building, room F-202, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Cost for this non-credit class is $69.    QuickBooks I class is designed to help you set up an accounting system using QuickBooks 2013. This 10-hour class will meet on April 23, 30, May 7, 14, and 21, from 2 to 3:50 p.m., in the Forum building, room F-202. Cost for this non-credit class is $195. LBCC Oregon Construction Contractors Board Education

Oregon Construction Contractors Board Education (CCB) will be offered through the Small Business Development Center at Linn-Benton Community College. This five session course will meet Tuesday evenings April 14 through May 12 from 6 to 10 p.m. on the LBCC Albany campus, Calapooia Center, room CC-210. The course is required for CCB licensing as part of the education requirement before taking the State of Oregon CCB exam. Participants are required to attend all five of the state-approved sessions to satisfy the educational requirement for Oregon contractor licensing. Topics include employer requirements and employee rights, Oregon lien and contract law, taxes/recordkeeping, best business practices, project and time management, estimating and scheduling, building codes, OR-OSHA requirements, job site safety, environmental laws, and test taking strategies in compliance with ORS 701-280.   Advance registration is required by April 10. Free Athletics Play Day for K-5th Students

A free Athletics Play Day for area youth will be held Friday, April 10, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Linn-Benton Community College’s Activities Center gym, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. LBCC Athletics department and student-athletes will host K-5th grade students and their adult companions for an afternoon of games including baseball, basketball, volleyball, foot races, jumping, disc golf, a geo-caching scavenger hunt, foursquare, ping-pong and more. Equipment will be provided. Representatives from the Portland Trailblazers, along with team mascot, “Blaze,” will be on hand during this free non-school day event. This play day is free and open to children in grades K-5th grade. Children must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the event. LBCC Seminar: How to Market your Business to State Agencies

The seminar “How to Market Your Business to State Agencies” will be held April 2 from Noon to 2 p.m. at Linn-Benton Community College’s Luckiamute Center, LM-130, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Tractor Safety Training Prepares Teens for Farm Jobs

Tractor Safety training will be held at Linn-Benton Community College’s Albany campus beginning March 23. This three-day training prepares teen’s ages 14 to 18 for job opportunities on local farms in the coming months. The course emphasizes safety and was developed in accordance with federal regulations. Students and parents must sign a Liability Waiver/Indemnification form within 24 hours of registration. Class will meet Monday thru Wednesday, March 23-25, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. on the LBCC Albany campus, Forum building room F-113, 6500 SW Pacific Blvd. Cost for this non-credit class is $96.50, which includes materials. Preregistration is required. Register early as class fills quickly. Students must be at least 14 years of age to register. To register, contact LBCC Community Education at 541-917-4840. MicroBiz Explore Class Offered

The class MicroBiz Explore will be held through the Small Business Development Center at Linn-Benton Community College beginning April 7. Explore the possibilities of starting your own business. Topics include how to register your business, how to determine pricing, how to find customers and more. Learn how to refine your business plan and get started. A free orientation will be held Tuesday, March 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the LBCC campus, in the Calapooia Center, room CC-213. The 10-week class will meet Tuesdays from 6 to 8:50 p.m. beginning April 7. Cost is based on income. The fee is determined and paid at orientation. “Women Working in a Man’s World” Panel Discussion

“Women Working in a Man’s World,” a panel discussion featuring women who work in the criminal justice system, will be held at LBCC Thursday, March 5 from Noon to 1 p.m. in the Forum Building lecture hall, room-104.   Panelist include Lebanon police officer Karin Lynn, Oak Creek Youth Correctional Facility Program Director Alicia Buettner, Becky Reed and Erin Fox with Benton County Juvenile Corrections, and Marci Johnston with LBCC Career and Counseling Center.
