Secrets To Planning A Successful Event

Learn what it takes to plan a successful event in the class "Secrets To Planning A Successful Event" held at the LBCC Benton Center May 6. LBCC NSH Gallery Exhibit: 2016 Annual Juried Art Student Show

An exhibit of juried student work by Linn-Benton Community College art students will be on display through June 2 at the college’s North Santiam Hall Gallery , 6500 SW Pacific Blvd, Albany. An award reception will be held in the gallery’s 2nd floor atrium Wednesday, May 4 from 12 to 1:30 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided. Local companies and community members donated certificates and monetary awards for the reception including: Bill Shumway, Pegasus Gallery, LBCC Bookstore, LBCC ASSH Division, LBCC Graphic Arts Department, LBCC Santiam Restaurant, Blick’s Art Materials, Corvallis Fall Festival, Frederick Westford on behalf of Gary Westford, Corvallis Photo Arts Guild, Dan Wise, Creative Framing, and Studio 262. Works of art were selected in a jurying process led by Bill Shumway of Corvallis. LBCC art galleries are open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. LBCC Pesticides in Spanish Class

Pesticide Private Applicator class in Spanish will be held through the Small Business Development Center at Linn-Benton Community College May 5 and 6. Designed to prepare senior agriculture workers to take the State of Oregon Department of Agriculture pesticide applicator exam, classes provide in-depth training, including extra coaching in math and calibration skills.  This course may also be used for recertification credits. Pesticide Private Applicator in Spanish will be held May 5 and 6 from 8 a.m. to 12 noon both days, at LBCC’s Calapooia Center, room CC-203/205. Cost is $119. Walidah Imarisha Free Presentation: “Alternatives to Incarceration”

Walidah Imarisha Writer, organizer, educator and spoken word artist Walidah Imarisha will give a free presentation titled “Alternatives to Incarceration” Thursday, May 5 from 12 to 1:30 p.m. at Linn-Benton Community College’s Forum lecture hall, room F-104. The presentation will address questions on the role prisons serve in our country, the possibility of envisioning a world where people are safe and where there is accountability without prisons, and whether our prison system actually causes rather than reduces crime. Imarisha has taught at Portland State University, Oregon State University and Southern New Hampshire University. She serves as a public scholar with the Oregon Humanities’ Conversation Project, facilitating programs across the state on topics such as Oregon Black history, alternatives to incarceration and the history of hip hop. LBCC Appoints Randy Camp to Board of Education

Randy Camp Randy Camp has been appointed to the Linn-Benton Community College Board of Education. Camp, of Corvallis, will be sworn in at the next board meeting held Wednesday, May 18 at 6 p.m. in the Calapooia Center boardroom, CC-103. Camp will fill Zone 6-7, the seat previously held by Lyn Riverstone, who resigned in January. Camp’s deep involvement in the community as well as his sig “We were grateful to have outstanding applicants for this open board position,” Hamann said. “We’re very excited to have Randy Camp join our Board, and we were honored to have such quality among the three applicants for the position.” Camp is general manager of CoEnergy Propane, which has operations based in Albany and Redmond. He is the incoming president for the Pacific Propane Gas Association. Camp also serves on the LBCC Foundation Board, and has helped attract contributions of equipment and money to support the college’s development of the Advanced Transportation Technology Center in Lebanon.

Dr. Robin DiAngelo Author and educator Dr. Robin DiAngelo will give a free presentation “White Fragility and the Patterns of Engagement” Monday, May 9 at 2 p.m. at Linn-Benton Community College’s Forum lecture hall, F-104, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Dr. DiAngelo's discussion touches upon how race shapes the lives of white people, what makes racism so hard for whites to see, and identifies common white racial patterns and speaks back to popular white narratives that work to deny racism. "White people in North America live in an insulated racial environment,” says Dr. DiAngelo. “White Fragility is a state in which even a minimum amount of racial stress becomes intolerable, triggering a range of defensive moves . . . outward display of emotions: anger, fear, and guilt, and behaviors such as argumentation, silence, and leaving the stress-inducing situation." Distinguished Staff, Pastega Excellence, Outstanding Part-time Faculty and staff service award winners were recognized at the college Inservice Day held April 12. “Inspiring us to continue to do great work.” The Distinguished Staff Award was presented to Mark Weiss, Career and Counseling Center faculty member. Mark began work at the college in 1981, serving as part-time, non-contracted faculty in Parenting Education through 1982. He was re-hired as a part-time counselor in 1989, and became full-time in 1990, providing career counseling, crisis counseling and consulting with the college's child care center. Mark has served as president of the college Faculty Association and chair of Academic Affairs, and as president of two professional organizations: The Oregon University and College Counseling Association, and the Oregon Career Development Association. Earth Day Lecture: “An ice core perspective on Climate Change, the last Ice Age, and Shakespeare”

Dr. Christo Buizert Dr. Christo Buizert, assistant professor at Oregon State University College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, will give a presentation titled “An ice core perspective on Climate Change, the last Ice Age, and Shakespeare” Thursday, April 21 from 12 to 12:50 p.m. at Linn-Benton Community College’s Madrone Hall, room MH-113. The presentation is part of the annual LBCC Earth Day Celebration, which runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the college courtyard, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.  Buizert’s research uses ice cores from the polar-regions as a way to understand past climate change and the evolution of Earth's atmosphere. He has been involved in multiple ice core drilling expeditions in both Greenland and Antarctica, and currently works as an assistant professor in the ice core laboratory at OSU. LBCC Oregon Construction Contractors Board Course

Oregon Construction Contractors Board Education will be offered through the Small Business Development Center at Linn-Benton Community College starting May 3. This five-session course will meet Tuesday evenings from 6 to 10 p.m. starting May 3 through May 31 at the LBCC Albany campus, Calapooia Center room CC-213. The course is required for CCB licensing as part of the education requirement before taking the State of Oregon CCB exam. Participants are required to attend all five of the state-approved sessions to satisfy the educational requirement for Oregon contractor licensing. Topics include employer requirements and employee rights, Oregon lien and contract law, taxes/recordkeeping, best business practices, project and time management, estimating and scheduling, building codes, OR-OSHA requirements, job site safety, environmental laws, and test taking strategies in compliance with ORS 701-280.  Cost is $329 and includes a copy of the 11th Edition of the Oregon Contractors Reference

LBCC Earth Day Celebration coming April 21

LBCC will hold an Earth Day Celebration Thursday, April 21 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the college courtyard, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.  Activities include flowerpot planting with flowers donated by Peoria Gardens, recycling station for your old shoes, tours of the organic farm, mushroom inoculation demonstration, recycled metal art sale, Earth Day t-shirt sale and more! Wear your favorite hippie garb to the “Dress Like a Hippie” contest. Sign-ups start at 11:30 a.m., contest starts at 12:15 p.m. on the courtyard stage. Have lunch at the “Earth Day Café” for just $5, $4 for students. LBCC English Faculty Present “Spring Light”

“Spring’s Light,” a reading and fundraiser benefiting the Linn-Benton Community College English Endowment Fund, will be held Friday, April 22 at 7 p.m. at the LBCC Benton Center, 757 NW Polk Street, Corvallis.  The evening includes short readings and performances by LBCC English department faculty and students, with specials guests Tina Marie Ivy and Dan Stone. Suggested donation is $10, $5 for students. A no‑host beverage and snack bar will be available. LBCC Librarian Richenda Hawkins. This year, the college dedicated $50,000 in Strategic Initiative funds to help pay for faculty work needed to adopt more affordable textbook options, with another $50k for next year. Librarian Richenda Hawkins shared that campus-wide more than 40 faculty representing every division have adopted Open Educational Resources (OERs) and 20 faculty have replaced textbooks with library resources. More than 60 classes have been converted from traditional textbooks to OERs or library resources, such as ebooks from the college's subscription to the Ebrary and EBSCO ebook databases. An added benefit for students receiving financial aid is the students have access to textbooks on day one, rather than having to wait for a financial aid award. Library staff applied for an Open Educational Resources Degree Initiative grant for $300,000. LBCC Earns Top-ten listing from Center for Digital Education

Linn-Benton Community College earned a top-ten ranking from the Center for Digital Education, tying for fourth place across the nation. The center's annual Digital Community Colleges Survey asks community colleges across the country to share their education tech initiatives. LBCC's Admission and Registration office was recognized for its work using Laserfiche processing and Infusionsoft communications programs to help streamline processes and communicate with students more efficiently. The Laserfiche program helped the college streamline its transcript evaluation process, cutting evaluation turn-around time from an average of six to eight weeks down to one week. Students receive automatic email notifications when their transcripts have been received and evaluated. Laserfiche is also used to find un-evaluated transcripts from students who have scheduled new student orientations, adding the transcript to an “urgent” folder and notifying staff of the need to evaluate them. An exhibit of poetry by LBCC’s Poetry Club and works of art by local artists entitled “The Thing With Feathers” will be on display through April 28 at Linn-Benton Community College’s South Santiam Hall Gallery, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. A reception will be held Wednesday, April 6 from 12 to 1 p.m. in the SSH Gallery. The reception is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided. New online class focuses on helping you with your aging parents

The online class “Success with Aging Parents” is being offered starting April 4 through LBCC Community Education. Learn about taking care of your loved one this online class geared towards family and friends of a elderly people including spouses, significant others, parent-child, elder relative, friends, even long-distance caregivers. Get essential information that caregivers or care partners need to care for an older adult. Learn how to prepare for changes in personal relationships when taking on caregiving roles, and improve your understanding of resources and the long-term care services and supports available. This four-week online course would be useful for health program students and emerging professionals as well. Cost is $149. LBCC CPR/BLS for Healthcare Providers

CPR certification training class for healthcare providers will be held through Linn-Benton Community College starting May 7. The CPR certification is good for clinical placements for up to two years. Sessions held May 7 and June 4 from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at LBCC’s Albany Campus, Calapooia Center, room CC-212. Cost is $95, supplies included. The CPR class qualifies for LBCC’s requirements in the following programs: Dental Assistant, Diagnostic Imaging, Nursing/CNA, Occupational Therapy, Medical Assistant, Polysomnography, Phlebotomy and Pharmacy Technician.
