Antiracist educator, essayist, author Tim Wise Lecture

Tim Wise Antiracist educator, essayist and author Tim Wise will give a free talk at Linn-Benton Community College Wednesday, October 14 at 2 p.m. in the college Forum building, room 104, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW. Wise will explore topics of race, white privilege and the notion of color-blindness in America, and provide an opportunity for engagement on the issue of racism. A free screening of Wise’s documentary "White Like Me" will be held Wednesday, Oct. 7 at noon in the LBCC Diversity Achievement Center, Forum 220. Additional screenings will be held Sunday, Oct. 11 at 4 p.m. at the Albany Public Library, 2450 14th Ave SE, and at the Corvallis Public Library, 645 NW Monroe, Monday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. The film is an exploration of race and racism in the US through the lens of whiteness and white privilege, and reassesses the American ideal of meritocracy and claims that we've entered a post-racial society. EDI Director Javier Cervantes Completes NCCHC Fellows Program

Javier Cervantes Javier Cervantes, director of the Department of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at Linn-Benton Community College, has received a certification of completion from the National Community College Hispanic Council Leadership Fellows Program. Cervantes, of Albany, works to prepare students, staff, faculty and local communities to live in an increasingly diverse society and workforce, and works on issues of equity, cultural fluency, capacity and competency, and increasing access and retention of underrepresented and diverse populations at the college level. “I am pleased to bring back a greater knowledge of how national issues in community colleges across America are really localized for LBCC,” said Cervantes. Javier Cervantes Javier Cervantes, director of the Department of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at Linn-Benton Community College, has been selected to participate in the National Community College Hispanic Council Leadership Fellows Program. Established more than 20 years ago through the University of San Diego, the 10-day NCCHC Fellows Program provides training, preparation and support of Hispanic leaders in America's community colleges, providing an opportunity to continue in their professional growth. In his position at LBCC, Cervantes, of Albany, works to prepare students, staff, faculty and local communities to live in an increasingly diverse society and workforce, including working on issues of equity, cultural fluency, capacity and competency, as well as increasing access and retention of underrepresented and diverse populations at the college level.
