Linn-Benton Community College student Jill Mahler has been named as the next editor‑in‑chief of the college student newspaper, The Commuter. Mahler, a staff writer for the newspaper, was appointed Wednesday by the Student Publications Committee to lead the newspaper staff during the 2011‑12 school year. From Sweet Home, Mahler served as editor of the Sweet Home High School newspaper. She will succeed Justin Bolger, who will conclude his term as editor‑in‑chief with publication of the last issue on June 1. Mahler is working toward earning her transfer degree at LBCC before enrolling in the School of Journalism and Communication at the University of Oregon.

The Linn-Benton Community College student newspaper, The Commuter, won a total of 15 awards at the annual Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association (ONPA) Collegiate Newspaper Contest held at the college May 6. Seventeen college and university ONPA members competed in this year’s annual event, submitting 603 entries in 21 categories. Editorial and advertising department staff at ONPA member newspapers judged the entries. The Commuter staff won several first place awards including Best Special Section. Ashley Christie won first place for Best Review; Best Cartooning went to Maggie O’Reilly; and Best Website went to Marci Sischo. Second place awards included Best Review and Best Columnist by Marci Sischo; Best Design and Best Graphic by Ashley Christie; and Best Cartooning by Ben Carson.
