LBCC Student Newspaper Wins 15 ONPA Awards

The Linn-Benton Community College student newspaper, The Commuter, won a total of 15 awards at the annual Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association (ONPA) Collegiate Newspaper Contest held at the college May 6.

Seventeen college and university ONPA members competed in this year’s annual event, submitting 603 entries in 21 categories. Editorial and advertising department staff at ONPA member newspapers judged the entries.

The Commuter staff won several first place awards including Best Special Section. Ashley Christie won first place for Best Review; Best Cartooning went to Maggie O’Reilly; and Best Website went to Marci Sischo. Second place awards included Best Review and Best Columnist by Marci Sischo; Best Design and Best Graphic by Ashley Christie; and Best Cartooning by Ben Carson.

Commuter staff also won several Honorable Mentions including Best Section and Best Headline Writing by staff; Best Editorial by Marci Sischo; Best Graphic by Maggie O’Reilly; Best Cartooning by Mason Britton; and Best House Ad by Ashley Christie.

Judges awarded 174 awards, including 62 first-place, 62 second-place, and 50 honorable mentions. In addition to the awards presentation, conference attendees participated in educational sessions offered during the conference.

Portland based ONPA, founded in 1887, hosts the annual awards for those Oregon colleges that are members of Oregon Collegiate Press.
