LBCC Music Department Presents Faculty Recital Series

The LBCC Music Department presents a recital featuring LBCC music faculty Thursday, Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m. in South Santiam Hall, room SSH-213, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. The recital “Autumn Splendor,” features music faculty Diane Hawkins on piano and flute, tenors Jason Caffarella and James Reddan, and soprano Patty Gerig performing works celebrating the magnificence of the autumn season. Tickets are $5 at the door, $3 for students and seniors, $1 for children 12 and under. All proceeds benefit the LBCC Music Department to support future guest artists and provide student scholarships. The Faculty Recital Series will feature one recital fall and spring term, with performances to be held in SSH-213. The spring term recital, “Musical Mayhem,” will be held in May 2013. LBCC Professional Development Class HR 101

The professional development class “HR 101” will be held Tuesday, Nov. 13 from 8 a.m. to noon at Linn-Benton Community College, Calapooia Center, room CC-211, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Designed for supervisors, this workshop will provide training on how to prevent liability in the workplace, including information on employment discrimination laws, preventing a hostile work environment, creating a paper trail for poor performance, and avoiding inappropriate and discriminatory interview questions. LBCC Benton Center Slide Show on PTC Hike

Alsie and Mary Campbell on the PCT near Crater Lake. Mary Campbell will hold a free slide show and lecture on her recent Pacific Crest Trail hike Thursday, Nov. 1 from noon to 1 p.m. at the center, room BC-205, 757 NW Polk Ave, Corvallis. Campbell, a LBCC math instructor, and her eighty-year-old mother-in-law, Alsie Campbell, hiked the Oregon portion of the Pacific Coast Trail this summer as a fundraiser for the Greenbelt Land Trust, which works to protect open spaces in local communities. Trekking the distance between the California/Oregon border and Bridge of the Gods on the Columbia River, the hike took them approximately two months to complete. LBCC Receives $20k grant for Reverse Transfer Program with OSU

LBCC will receive $20,000 as part of a $450,000 two-year grant program awarded to the state of Oregon. The “Credit When It’s Due: Recognizing the Value of Quality Associate Degrees” grant is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Helios Education Foundation, Kresge Foundation, Lumina Foundation and USA Funds. LBCC’s portion of the grant will be used to help build its Reverse Transfer Program with Oregon Statue University , part of a new pilot program between Oregon’s public community colleges and universities offering students the option to obtain an associate’s degree after transferring to university. This past summer, LBCC and OSU took the first steps to implement the program, allowing students who are enrolled in the college’s degree partnership program to be awarded an associate’s degree from LBCC upon completion of equivalent courses at OSU. LBCC Culinary Arts Fall Banquet “Farm to Fork”

Tickets are on sale for the annual Farm to Fork Fall Banquet at Linn-Benton Community College to be held Friday, Nov. 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the college’s Commons cafeteria, second floor Calapooia Center, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. The annual banquet includes brussel sprout slaw salad, Ninkasi braised beef and Northwest chicken galantine, sautéed local greens and roasted potatoes. Vegetarian entree choice includes duet of potato gnocchi with chanterelle rosemary sauce and barley risotto. Dessert is fresh fall fruit with Chantilly-filled puff pastry gallette. Linn-Benton Opera Guild Preview: Don Giovanni

The Linn-Benton Opera Guild will preview the operas Don Giovanni, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, on Tuesday, Oct. 30 at 7:45 p.m. at 303 Benton Hall, Oregon State University campus, Corvallis. OSU music professor Angela Carlson will tell the story of the opera and play recorded excerpts from the score. Admission is free to Linn-Benton Opera Guild members, students of Linn-Benton Community College and OSU. Cost for the general public is $5. Performance dates will be Nov. 2, 4, 8 and 10, at 7:30 p.m. at the Keller Auditorium, 222 SW Clay, Portland. The opera will be sung in Italian with projected English translations. Linn-Benton Community College and the Linn-Benton Opera Guild will host a bus ride to the closing performance on Saturday, Nov.10 for those interested. Benton Center Offers Photobooks Class

Learn to create your own photobook in the class Photobooks: Perfect Memory Gifts at the LBCC Benton Center. Photobooks make great gifts and are easy to make. Discover the many different websites available and how to upload, edit and publish your own photobook in a soft or hard cover. Photojournalist Rebecca Barnhart will give you tips on choosing and editing your personal photos. LBCC Hosts National Alternative Fuel Vehicle Day Oct. 18

National Alternative Fuel Vehicle Day Odyssey will be held at Linn-Benton Community College Thursday, Oct. 18 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the college courtyard quad, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Several alternative fuel vehicles will be on display at the event including a Compressed Natural Gas truck from Northwest Natural Gas, a plug-in Prius hybrid from John and Phil's Toyota, an electric Nissian Leaf from Jack Scoville, a propane-powered Chevy Avalanche from Co-Energy Propane, and the SRK three-wheeled electric vehicle prototype from Arcimoto of Eugene. Created in 2002 by the National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium , a program of West Virginia University, the National AFV Day is a biennial event that is dedicated to promoting cleaner choices in transportation. LBCC Automotive Technologies partnered with Odyssey to bring the event to campus, one of more than 160 being held concurrently across the United States to provide information on new vehicle propulsion system

LBCC Announces New Foundation Board of Trustee Member

Liz Carle Corvallis attorney Liz Carle is the newest member of the Linn-Benton Community College Foundation Board of Trustees , the college announced today. Carle, an associate attorney at The Reynolds Law Firm, joined the board in September. She is a past board and executive committee member of the Benton County Family Violence Council and Oregon Student Safety on the Move. Carle previously worked as a Benton County deputy district attorney and a prosecuting attorney for the city of Eugene. She earned her bachelor’s degree at the University of California San Diego and her law degree from the University of Oregon School of Law. “I am excited to be a part of an organization dedicated to making our communities better places to live and work,” Carle said. “As I looked for ways to be more involved, I could see that my work with and support of the Foundation will make a difference in people’s lives.” Formed in 1972, the LBCC Foundation raises money to fund major new campus faci

LBCC Hosts Oregon Shakespeare Festival Actors

Laura Mont Orion Bradshaw Oregon Shakespearian Festival actors Orion Bradshaw and Laura Montes will give two performances on Monday, Oct. 22, at Linn-Benton Community College as part of the OSF School Visit Program . The program is free and open to the public, with the actors performing selections from Shakespeare as well as selections from more contemporary plays. The first one-hour show, “Live, and Deal with Others Better,” will be from 10 to 10:50 a.m. and features Shakespeare characters from various upcoming OSF season plays. The second show, “The Course of True Love Never Did Run Smooth,” will be held from Noon to 12:50 p.m. and features a medley of scenes from Shakespeare and contemporary plays. Benton Center Acoustic Showcase Presents Shy Shy & Gary

Shy Shy and Gary will perform at the LBCC Benton Center Acoustic Showcase on Friday, Oct. 19 from noon to 1 p.m. in the center’s student lounge, 757 NW Polk Ave., Corvallis. High school sweethearts Shy and Gary Nolde have been singing their style of American folk and blues for about 50 years.  “Through the years we've seen it all, had it all, spent it all, known our share of joy and pain, sunshine and rain. Just for Fun Piano Workshop

A “Just For Fun Piano” workshop will held on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Nationally known pianist and composer Donn Rochlin specializes in teaching adults a creative and unique approach to learning and re-learning to play the piano. The workshop is designed for beginners as well as seasoned players. NSH Gallery Shows EOU Art Faculty Works

Seven art faculty from Eastern Oregon University in LaGrande are featured in an exhibit now on view at the North Santiam Hall Galleries at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW, Albany. The work ranges from sculpture and collage to oil painting and photography, and demonstrates the EOU Art Department’s mission to “actively contribute to the aesthetic and conceptual dialogue that is visual art.” This is the third in a series of annual fall shows at LBCC featuring the art faculty from Oregon’s colleges and universities. LBCC 18th Annual Art Faculty Exhibit

The visual art faculty at Linn-Benton Community College are opening the 2012-13 Fall Term with their annual exhibit in the South Santiam Hall and Calapooia Center galleries on LBCC’s Albany Campus. Featured in the show are oil paintings and drawings by Department Chair Dori Bartholomew Litzer; charcoal drawings by Analee Fuentes; large-scale oil paintings by Gary Westford; wood-fired ceramics by Jay Widmer; photographs by Kurt Norlin; and lithographs by Frosene King. Also on view are photographs by gallery coordinator Rich Bergeman. The exhibit runs through Oct. 31. The gallery is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
