Linn-Benton Community College

The public can now read historical issues of Linn-Benton Community College’s student newspaper, The Commuter , through a free online archive. The digitized back issues are hosted in CommunityArchive@LBCC , an online archive launched in summer 2017 and hosted by the LBCC Library. Student employees Chase Sublette and Bowen Orcutt digitized the 1,324 issues over the 2017-18 academic year. The first issue dates to Jan. 30, 1970 . Michaela Willi Hooper, LBCC Open Educational Resources and Textbook Affordability Librarian, helped oversee the project. “I’m excited to see this trove available to people interested in the history of Linn and Benton counties,” said Hooper. “It provides an important snapshot of our college’s past as we celebrate our 50th anniversary.” Jane Sandberg is LBCC’s Electronic Resources Librarian, and serves as the software developer and system administrator for CommunityArchive@LBCC.   “Members of the LBCC Community are very naturally...

Charlie McNabb, author of Nonbinary Gender Identities: History, Culture, Resources, will speak about their research at 12 p.m. Tuesday, February 6 at the Linn-Benton Community College Library, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. McNabb, an ethnographer, librarian, community archivist, and queer/trans/disability activist, will explain nonbinary identities, read passages from their book, and lead a Q&A discussion. “Although there have always been people who identify outside the gender binary, only recently have they gained popular media attention,” said McNabb. “Despite some visibility, nonbinary gender identities are poorly understood by the general public. It is critically important for gender minorities to find themselves in the media that they consume. If you missed the President’s Winter Forum on Thursday, Jan. 14, President Hamann covered several interesting topics, including the rollout of a new college budget model, which will be presented at the Board meeting Jan. 20. The new model will provide information to the board on college needs, and then guidance on how to go about funding those needs - a slightly different approach from the current budget model. A solution to the Benton Center parking and expansion project will also be presented at the board meeting. The project is projected to provide an additional 268 much-needed parking spaces at the center, along with an additional 20,000-square-feet of instructional space. President Hamann also shared that at the end of this year the college will no longer be part of Achieving the Dream, but will move instead to the new Guided Pathways partnership, which includes 30 community colleges nationwide.
