Learn to play piano in just three hours in “Piano Just for Fun” held November 19.

Taught by nationally-known pianist Donn Rochlin, this class is for the total beginner as well as classical pianist. Learn the chords and tools needed to play your favorite songs, and how to improvise freely without years of practice, how chords work in a song, and how to get more out of sheet music by reading less.

This one-session class meets Saturday, November 19 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Albany Senior Center, 489 Water Ave. Ages 16 and up are welcome. Cost is $99 and includes guide and CD.

Since 1995, Rochlin has emphasized a creative approach to playing piano that is less traditional, teaching thousands of people at colleges and universities nationwide how to play in one short session.

Rochlin notes that most of the famous classical composers were known for their improvisational skills before they were recognized as composers. In light of this fact, they taught much differently than the majority of modern teachers who emphasize rote note reading and memorization.

Rochlin goes on to say that there is absolutely nothing wrong about learning note reading but that it needs to be tempered with a creative approach that includes an understanding of improvisation and general chord theory.
