Learn how to use computers to achieve better grades in college in the class College Student Computer Survival 101 held at Linn-Benton Community College summer term. This two-week class focuses on Microsoft programs. Learn how to weed through information and use computers to accomplish the tasks assigned by your instructor. Class will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4 to 6:50 p.m. beginning July 11 in Mackenzie Hall, room MKH-211. Cost for this non-credit class is $45 with a $3 lab fee. Pre-registration is required. LBCC's Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) team took 3rd place in the Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) 10th Annual International Underwater Robotics Competition held at the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, June 16-18. The team competed against ROV's from around the world, placing 3rd behind Purdue University and a team from California. LBCC’s team was one of only two teams to successfully complete all of the missions twice. The final scores were based on a combination of the mission scores and scores for the team’s technical report, poster and oral examination. Linn-Benton Community College and Oregon Institute of Technology will sign a dual enrollment agreement at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 15 in LBCC’s Calapooia Center Board Room. The dual enrollment agreement will allow students to become concurrently enrolled at each institution. Students who intend on obtaining a bachelor’s degree at OIT can maximize credit transfer and gain access to resources including financial aid, advising and student services at both institutions. LBCC and Oregon Tech have standing partnerships aligning curriculum in diagnostic imaging , apprenticeship and machine tool technology. The dual enrollment agreement will encourage future alignment of additional academic programs. The professional development class Things Every Supervisor Has to Know: HR 101 will be offered by Linn-Benton Community College Business and Employer Services on Tuesday, July 26 from 8 a.m. to Noon at the LBCC Albany campus, Fireside Room, Calapooia Center building, room CC-211, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW. This basic human resources class will provide information and strategies to prevent liability in the workplace. Participants will learn about employment discrimination laws including Title VII, ADA, ADEA, FMLA, how to prevent the creation of a hostile work environment, how to create a paper trail for poor performance, and how to avoid inappropriate and discriminatory interview questions. The National Science Foundation awarded Linn-Benton Community College’s Mechatronics Program with the second year of a three-year Advanced Technological Education grant. NSF approved the release of $241,564 of additional funding for the second year of the grant, bringing the total awarded to the college to date to $506,759. The Mechatronics Program received the NSF ATE grant in 2010. According to Denis Green, Mechatronics and Industrial Maintenance faculty and department chair, the overall purpose of the grant is to expand the scope and reach of the program. “We are expanding our teaching of sustainable energy in wind, solar, biofuels, and biomass,” said Green. “In tandem with sustainable energy, we are emphasizing energy efficiency, believing the most cost effective way to save energy is to use less of it.” The reach of the program is being expanded through blended learning offerings, creating pathway certificates and recruiting high school students into Mechatronics training, sai...

Linn-Benton Community College honored several community members with awards including Distinguished Alumni, a Distinguished Citizen and an Honorary Degree at its Commencement held June 9. Lisa Charpilloz Hanson, Deputy Director, Oregon Department of Agriculture in Salem, and Denise Soto, Soto Law Firm in Albany, were honored with LBCC Distinguished Alumna awards. Hanson completed an associate of general studies from LBCC and a bachelor of science in Agriculture and Resource Economics from Oregon State University. Soto completed an associate of arts degree from LBCC, graduated Magna Cum Laude at Oregon State University and earned a Doctorate of Jurisprudence from Willamette University. Professionally, Hanson has been involved in policy development and implementation for agricultural, environmental and natural resources with state and federal agencies.
