The LBCC Music Department presents a recital featuring LBCC music faculty Thursday, Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m. in South Santiam Hall, room SSH-213, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. The recital “Autumn Splendor,” features music faculty Diane Hawkins on piano and flute, tenors Jason Caffarella and James Reddan, and soprano Patty Gerig performing works celebrating the magnificence of the autumn season. Tickets are $5 at the door, $3 for students and seniors, $1 for children 12 and under. All proceeds benefit the LBCC Music Department to support future guest artists and provide student scholarships. The professional development class “HR 101” will be held Tuesday, Nov. 13 from 8 a.m. to noon at Linn-Benton Community College, Calapooia Center, room CC-211, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Designed for supervisors, this workshop will provide training on how to prevent liability in the workplace, including information on employment discrimination laws, preventing a hostile work environment, creating a paper trail for poor performance, and avoiding inappropriate and discriminatory interview questions. Alsie and Mary Campbell on the PCT near Crater Lake. Mary Campbell will hold a free slide show and lecture on her recent Pacific Crest Trail hike Thursday, Nov. 1 from noon to 1 p.m. at the center, room BC-205, 757 NW Polk Ave, Corvallis. Campbell, a LBCC math instructor, and her eighty-year-old mother-in-law, Alsie Campbell, hiked the Oregon portion of the Pacific Coast Trail this summer as a fundraiser for the Greenbelt Land Trust, which works to protect open spaces in local communities. Trekking the distance between the California/Oregon border and Bridge of the Gods on the Columbia River, the hike took them approximately two months to complete. LBCC will receive $20,000 as part of a $450,000 two-year grant program awarded to the state of Oregon. The “Credit When It’s Due: Recognizing the Value of Quality Associate Degrees” grant is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Helios Education Foundation, Kresge Foundation, Lumina Foundation and USA Funds. LBCC’s portion of the grant will be used to help build its Reverse Transfer Program with Oregon Statue University , part of a new pilot program between Oregon’s public community colleges and universities offering students the option to obtain an associate’s degree after transferring to university. This past summer, LBCC and OSU took the first steps to implement the program, allowing students who are enrolled in the college’s degree partnership program to be awarded an associate’s degree from LBCC upon completion of equivalent courses at OSU. Senior Health Insurance Benefits Assistance (SHIBA) is holding a Medicare class on the basics of Medicare Plans A, B, C and D on Thursday, Nov. 8 from 10-11:50 a.m. at the LBCC Lebanon Center, 44 Industrial Way. Learn how to better understand your Medicare benefits and how to choose a supplemental insurance plan that best meets your individual needs. Tickets are on sale for the annual Farm to Fork Fall Banquet at Linn-Benton Community College to be held Friday, Nov. 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the college’s Commons cafeteria, second floor Calapooia Center, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. The annual banquet includes brussel sprout slaw salad, Ninkasi braised beef and Northwest chicken galantine, sautéed local greens and roasted potatoes. Vegetarian entree choice includes duet of potato gnocchi with chanterelle rosemary sauce and barley risotto. Dessert is fresh fall fruit with Chantilly-filled puff pastry gallette. The Linn-Benton Opera Guild will preview the operas Don Giovanni, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, on Tuesday, Oct. 30 at 7:45 p.m. at 303 Benton Hall, Oregon State University campus, Corvallis. OSU music professor Angela Carlson will tell the story of the opera and play recorded excerpts from the score. Admission is free to Linn-Benton Opera Guild members, students of Linn-Benton Community College and OSU. Cost for the general public is $5. Performance dates will be Nov. 2, 4, 8 and 10, at 7:30 p.m. at the Keller Auditorium, 222 SW Clay, Portland. The opera will be sung in Italian with projected English translations. Linn-Benton Community College and the Linn-Benton Opera Guild will host a bus ride to the closing performance on Saturday, Nov.10 for those interested.
