A new, one of a kind art class "Beer and Brushes: Find Your Inner Picasso" is being offered through LBCC Community Education May 12 and May 14. Explore your artistic talent while enjoying the atmosphere of a local brewery. Receive step-by-step instruction, supplies, and your first glass of beer for inspiration (or age appropriate beverage). No experience is necessary. Taught by Chelsea Vandenend, a highly talented, vibrant local artist and LBCC instructor. “We found our Corks and Canvas class, which pairs wine and art, to be extremely popular and felt there is likely an excellent audience with equal passion for beer,” shares Chelsea Nordby, LBCC Program Coordinator for Corvallis. Learn how to effectively use Craigslist, eBay, and Etsy.  Explore shopping options and popular marketplace services while learning to create ads that attract buyers and other strategies to get results and protect yourself as both buyer and seller.                  This three-week class will meet Tuesdays from 6 to 7:50 p.m. starting May 12 at the Albany Senior Center, 489 Water Avenue NW. Kara Carsner Nan Dong Joseph Page Second-year LBCC Culinary Arts student Kara Carsner won a first place prize of $250 for her chocolate hazelnut mousse cake with hazelnut milk at the 14th annual LBCC Oregon Hazelnut Recipe Competition held April 26. The competition, which began in 2001, pitted eight LBCC culinary students in a contest for the best use of hazelnuts in an original recipe, which includes appetizers, main dishes and desserts. The Oregon Hazelnut Marketing Board donated the cash prizes, with local hazelnut growers and long-time supporters of the college culinary program Wayne and Joanne Chambers supplying the hazelnuts for the competition. Carsner, of Albany, will graduate in June with an associate’s degree in Culinary Arts, and is transferring to Oregon State University to complete a bachelor’s degree in Nutrition and Food Services.  Nan Dong, of Corvallis, received the second place prize of $150 for her French hazelnut chocolate moon cake. “OneVibe” Diversity Day will be held at Linn-Benton Community College Wednesday, May 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the college courtyard, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. This high-profile event brings art, culture, food, performances and expression to campus, featuring performers representing a wide variety of skills and passions all centered on diversity. Celebrate choral music in the Willamette Valley at the 7th annual “Albany Sings!” choir concert Thursday, May 21 at 7 p.m. at the Linn County Fair & Expo Center, Willamette Hall Event Center, 3700 Knox Butte Road, Albany. Approximately 350 singers from Calapooia, Memorial, and North Albany Middle Schools, West and South Albany High Schools, and Linn-Benton Community College choirs will perform a plethora of choral works sure to knock your socks off! The LBCC Art Student Juried Show will on display through June 5 in the North Santiam Hall Galleries of Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW, Albany, OR. An awards presentation and reception will be held Wednesday, May 6 from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the second floor of the NSH Gallery, with more than $2,000 worth of prices and certificates to be awarded.     This year’s student show is one of the largest; with 96 artworks by LBCC art students on the two floors of the NSH Gallery. Shelley Curtis, curator and manager for Art About Agriculture, chose many of the awards, including Best of Show.
