Basic Nursing Assistant Online Training will be offered through LBCC Business and Employer Services beginning Monday, Sept. 26 at the LBCC Albany Campus, Willamette Hall, room WH-120, 6500 Pacific Blvd. S.W., Albany, Oregon. This course will provide 51 hours of lecture online hours (5 credits) through Southwestern Oregon Community College which includes instruction in bedside nursing skills, basic restorative skill, mental health and social service needs, personal care skills, and knowledge of client’s rights. The course also includes (4 credits) through LBCC as 24 hours of skills lab and 75 clinical rotation hours. Training includes knowledge and skills necessary to care for clients in long-term care and acute care facilities that are under direct care of a licensed nurse. The course runs through December 15. Learn how to improve your calligraphy in the class Calligraphy II offered at the Linn-Benton Community College Sweet Home Center this summer. This 6-week class is a continuation of Calligraphy I, exploring more of the formal or cursive lettering system. Additional calligraphic styles will be introduced according to student interest. Class will meet on Tuesdays from 1 to 3:50 p.m. at the Sweet Home Center. Cost for this non-credit class is $54 plus a $3 lab fee. A variety of exercise and fitness classes are being offered through the LBCC Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers beginning June 20. Classes offered in Lebanon and Scio for the summer term include Step Boot Camp, Easy Cardio Fitness, Pilates, Zumba Gold, Zumba, Better Bones and Balance, Body Toning and Aerobics, and Yoga. Earn your Adult Basic Education/General Education Diploma (GED) through classes offered at Linn-Benton Community College’s Lebanon Center this summer. Classes will help you prepare to pass your GED test and help you to improve your skills in reading, writing or math. Improving your skills can help you be ready to fill job requirements or help you prepare for college. A free two-day orientation will be held at the LBCC Lebanon Center on June 6 and 7, and again on June 20 and 21 from 9 to 11:50 a.m. each day. You must attend both days of the orientation before you are eligible to attend the ABE/GED class. ABE/GED class will meet on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 11:50 am beginning June 20 at the Lebanon Center, 44 Industrial Way. Cost for the class is $30. Scholarships are available. LBCC is offering two free Pharmacy Technician Program pre-application information sessions for those interested in training to work as a Pharmacy Technician. Information session dates will be on Tuesday, June 7, from 2 to 4 p.m. and again on Monday, Oct. 24, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital, conference rooms B/C. No need to register to attend. Attendance at one of the sessions is mandatory in order to take the program. The 17-week Pharmacy Technician Program will be offered starting February 6, 2012 through June 8, 2012. Skill areas covered in the training include customer service, pharmacy math, pharmacy laws and rules, pharmaceutical vocabulary, prescriptions, billing, insurance, industry software, pharmacology and on the job training. The semi-annual LBCC Benton Center Pottery Sale will be held on Friday, June 3 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on the north patio outside of the center's ceramics studio, 757 NW Polk Avenue, Corvallis. LBCC ceramic faculty, instructional assistants and students will showcase their work and offer raku, high fire, salt, and wood fire pieces for sale. Linn-Benton Community College student Jill Mahler has been named as the next editor‑in‑chief of the college student newspaper, The Commuter. Mahler, a staff writer for the newspaper, was appointed Wednesday by the Student Publications Committee to lead the newspaper staff during the 2011‑12 school year. From Sweet Home, Mahler served as editor of the Sweet Home High School newspaper. She will succeed Justin Bolger, who will conclude his term as editor‑in‑chief with publication of the last issue on June 1. Mahler is working toward earning her transfer degree at LBCC before enrolling in the School of Journalism and Communication at the University of Oregon.

The Veterans Club at Linn-Benton Community College is sponsoring a vigil in honor of Memorial Day on Wednesday, May 25 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the college courtyard, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Displays will include a Soldier's Cross and flags placed in honor of the MIA’s and POW’s from wars from the American Revolution to the most current conflicts. Linn-Benton Community College announced the induction of the 1971 LBCC Men’s Baseball team into the Northwest Athletic Association of Community College’s Hall of Fame. The college also announced the recognition by NWAACC of staff member Teresa Thomas and former staff member Edwin Watson for Outstanding Service to the college athletic program. The awards will be given at NWAACC's 24th Annual Hall of Fame Banquet held June 2 in Vancouver, Washington. The event honors this year's class of Hall of Fame inductees, Outstanding Service Awards, coaches and administrators. Coached by former staff member Dick McClain, in the team's first season of intercollegiate play, 17 players were molded into a winning team, winning more than 30 games and capturing the Southern Division Oregon Community Athletic Association League Championship title. The LBCC Benton Center will hold a ceramics lecture and workshop with sculptural ceramic artist Brad Mildrexler on Friday, May 20 and Saturday, May 21 at the center, 757 NW Polk Ave., Corvallis. Mildrexler is known for his abstract expressions in textural form. He will share his work in a Friday evening slide lecture from 7 to 8 p.m. in at the Benton Center, room BC-204. The lecture is free and open to the public. On Saturday, May 21, Mildrexler will demonstrate his techniques for hand-building sculpture and texturing pieces using natural materials in a daylong workshop from 9 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. in the Benton Center ceramic studio, room BC-140. Best described as "contemplative folk music," Tom and Ellen's music is both thought provoking and reflective. The Linn-Benton Community College Re-Choired Element Chamber Choir, Concert Choir, Blue Light Special Men's A cappella Ensemble, and Sirens Women's A cappella Ensemble received four silver ratings at the American International Choral Festival held in Reno, Nevada on May 4. The ensembles competed in the Concert Choirs of Mixed Voices, Chamber Choirs of Mixed Voices, Men's Barbershop and Women's Barbershop categories. LBCC's Blue Light Special received a special invitation to open the Opening Ceremonies for the festival, and the LBCC Re-Choired Element Chamber Choir was one of only nine choirs to be selected to compete in the Grand Prix competition. The LBCC Re-Choired Element Chamber also qualified for the 2012 World Choir Games. Twenty-three choirs from around world were represented at the festival including the United States, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Mexico, Singapore, Philippines and the United Kingdom.

The Linn-Benton Community College student newspaper, The Commuter, won a total of 15 awards at the annual Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association (ONPA) Collegiate Newspaper Contest held at the college May 6. Seventeen college and university ONPA members competed in this year’s annual event, submitting 603 entries in 21 categories. Editorial and advertising department staff at ONPA member newspapers judged the entries. The Commuter staff won several first place awards including Best Special Section. Ashley Christie won first place for Best Review; Best Cartooning went to Maggie O’Reilly; and Best Website went to Marci Sischo. Second place awards included Best Review and Best Columnist by Marci Sischo; Best Design and Best Graphic by Ashley Christie; and Best Cartooning by Ben Carson. Diagnostic Imaging faculty Stacy Mallory makes no bones about the fact that she cannot fix the problems in Haiti. But what she can do is help the people to help themselves. Stacy spent most of the month of April volunteering in the only hospital in Haiti with an emergency room, Hospital Bernard Mevs. Located in Port-au-Prince, the hospital serves a population of about 3 million people, yet only has two emergency room beds, four ICU beds, and 11 medical-surgical beds. The whole hospital takes up four small buildings, with walled rooms for X-ray and CT scan equipment. Stacy’s purpose: To train three men with no formal college education who spoke very little English to X-ray patients on machines whose instructions were in English. The challenges were many, Stacy said. Fifteen students received awards at Linn-Benton Community College’s annual Juried Art Student Exhibit at a reception held Wednesday, May 4, in the college’s North Santiam Hall Gallery. Johnny Beaver of Lebanon was awarded Best of Show for his acrylic painting “The Idealist” by juror Beverly Soasey, curator and director of the Jacobs Gallery in Eugene. A Poet Laureate helps us to "remember." Laureates are practicing poets who believe in the power of reading poetry as well as writing poetry, and so are good at visioning ways to cultivate poetry reading and writing in their community. Our nation's Poet Laureateship is a tradition which began in 1937. Our state's tradition (though not continuous) dates back to 1923. On any stage, the appointment of a poet laureate recognizes and encourages the poet's work. Equally, the appointment invests in the poet's promise to encourage and promote poetry in their community's lives.
