SSH Gallery Features Eugene Photographer Susie Morrill

Portraits of farmers, families and colorful individuals by Eugene photographer Susie Morrill are on exhibit at LBCC’s South Santiam Gallery Jan. 3 through Jan. 28. A public reception and gallery talk by the artist will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday Jan. 13 at the gallery, located on the Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW. “Portraits in Place” features 20 of Morrill’s black-and-white prints of “ordinary Oregonians” who work and live in the southern Willamette Valley. Morrill’s approach to portraiture is direct and engaging, showing us fathers and sons, homeless families, ranchers with their dogs, and other characters she has met in her nearly three decades in photography. Morrill’s style is often described as “environmental portraiture,” in which the settings where she places her sitters offer the viewer more information about the subject than they would glean from a traditional studio portrait. Community Education Class on Nutrition for the New Year

Discover a new, healthier you in the class Nutrition for the New Year offered through Linn-Benton Community College Albany Community Education starting in January. Learn the fundamentals of proper nutrition and healthy eating in this hands-on course that will not only focus on easy meal planning and low fat cooking, but will also touch upon serious health issues such as obesity and diabetes. This four-week class will meet on Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 7:50 p.m. starting Jan. 13 at the Albany Senior Center, 489 Water Avenue NW. Cost for this non-credit class is $39 with a $15 lab fee. Lebanon & Sweet Home Centers Life Stories Class

Learn how to write your family history in the class Your Own Life Stories held at the LBCC Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers winter term. Your life stories and those of your family members are treasures that need to be preserved as carefully as photos. Learn how t recall and recount family history in your own narrative style with enhancement of detail, description and dialogue. Tips on publishing will enable you to submit articles and stories to magazines as fact or fiction. Lebanon Center Dance Classes

The LBCC Lebanon Center has several opportunities for dance expression and exercise this winter term. Learn the ancient and beautiful art of Belly Dance. Free Veterinary Assistant Orientation

A free Veterinary Assistant Program orientation will be held at Linn-Benton Community College for those interested in training to become a Veterinary Assistant. Orientation will be held on Thursday, Dec. 30, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the LBCC Albany campus, Calapooia Center, second floor room CC-212, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW. No need to preregister to attend. Attendance at the orientation is mandatory in order to take the program. The 16-week LBCC Veterinary Assistant Program starts Feb. 14, 2011 and runs through June 3, 2011. Skill areas covered in the training include an introduction to hospital management, business procedures and job preparation skills. The program will also cover basic education and experience in commonly used medical and surgical techniques as well as an understanding of common disease states. Cost for the program is $3,650. The LBCC Lebanon Center is offering several classes for the artist in you this winter term. The eight-week Oil Painting Workshop class, for beginning or intermediate students, will cover basic painting techniques including perspective and color mixing. Class will meet on Thursdays beginning Jan. 6, from 1 p.m. to 3:50 p.m. at the LBCC Lebanon Center. Cost for this class is $72. The class Beginning Watercolor, for beginners and intermediate painters, will help you learn the mediums of water, paper, pigment and brushes. LBCC is offering a class for those who have never touched a computer before and want hands-on, step-by-step instruction. The class Computers–First Step is designed to go at an easy pace and includes identifying the various parts of the computer, how to turn it on and off, and how to use the mouse and keyboard. This class also introduces working with Windows 7 and a brief introduction to e-mail and the Internet. The four-week class will meet in Lebanon on Wednesdays beginning Jan. 5 from 6 p.m. to 8:50 pm., and in Sweet Home on Thursdays beginning Jan. 13 from 6 p.m to 8:50 pm. Cost for this class is $45. Sweet Home Center Art Classes

The LBCC Sweet Home Center is offering several classes for the artist in you this winter term. Learn the writing techniques of calligraphy and the use of different inks, pens and paper by taking a Calligraphy class. A variety of other arts will be incorporated. This 10-week class will meet on Tuesdays from 1 p.m. to 3:20 p.m. beginning Jan. 4 at the Sweet Home Center. Cost for this class is $76.50. For a hands-on form of artistic expression, take the Wheel Throwing Pottery class. This beginning class focuses on the fundamentals of throwing clay on the potter's wheel. LBCC Partners with English Language Cultural Institute

The English Language Cultural Institute is partnering with Linn-Benton Community College to bring international students to the Albany campus. ELCI’s English as a second language program prepares international students for college-level academic work. The institute, headquartered in Monmouth, recruits students from around the globe to participate. ELCI purchased a modular building with five classrooms, which is scheduled to be installed on campus in February. LBCC and ELCI will jointly pay the cost to bring in the building utilities. As part of a 10-year contract, ELCI will pay the college $50 per student for each four-week session, and $300 per month rental fee to house the program on campus, said LBCC Vice President of Finance and Operation Jim Huckestein. The fees will help LBCC recoup its initial investment to bring the program in, added Huckestein. LBCC Lebanon & Sweet Home Centers: ABE/GED Basic Skills Class

Classes to help you earn your Adult Basic Education/General Education Diploma (GED) will be offered at Linn-Benton Community College Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers starting in January. These classes can help you prepare to pass your GED test and help you to improve your skills in reading, writing or math. Improved skills will help you be ready to fill job requirements or help you prepare for college. A free two-day orientation will be held at the LBCC Lebanon Center and the LBCC Sweet Home Center on Jan. 3 and Jan. 4. Choose to attend the morning session from 9 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. or the evening session from 6 p.m. to 8:50 p.m. at either location. Preschool Cooperative Openings in Philomath

Linn-Benton Community College's Parent Cooperative Preschool in Philomath has openings for winter term. Preschool classes will meet on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings starting Jan. 3. The program incorporates parents as an active part of their child's learning. Parent involvement includes working in the classroom and joining the teacher to plan activities for the children. LBCC's preschool cooperative was previously located in Clemens Elementary, and has moved to a modular located at Philomath Middle School due to the remodeling in the school district. 40th Annual Children's Winter Festival Dec. 11

Celebrating 40 years, the annual LBCC Children’s Winter Festival will be held at Linn-Benton Community College on Saturday, Dec. 11 from 1 to 4 p.m. on the second floor of the Calapooia Center building, 6500 SW Pacific Blvd., Albany. The festival is free to all Linn and Benton County children ages 12 and under. An optional donation of two cans of food will be accepted to benefit the Linn-Benton Lunch Box program. There will be different ethnic rooms featuring crafts such as construction of Chinese masks, Kwanza bead necklaces, dreidel making, cookie decorating, pictures with Santa, balloon artists, a magician, a frame-making room where children can make their own picture frame, and a room for making their own gingerbread house.
