LBCC Benton Center Word Mob Poetry Slam

LBCC’s Poetry Club will present “Word Mob” at the LBCC Benton Center Friday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m., 757 NW Polk Ave., Corvallis. LBCC students and poets will share poetry in an open-mic format. Learn the second level of Photoshop Elements, how to use your iPad or Kindle Fire, through Linn-Benton Community College Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers. The class Photoshop Elements II goes beyond the basics to include how to use layers, touch up portrait photos, restore old photos, add special effects, create slide shows and more. This five-week class will meet Wednesdays from 6 to 7:50 p.m. beginning Nov. 13 at the LBCC Lebanon Center, 44 Industrial Way. Cost is $39. Search, download and use practical and fun apps, learn tips for shopping and how to edit and share your pictures and videos. LBCC Valley Writers Series Hosts Danny Earl Simmons

Danny Earl Simmons (photo contributed) Corvallis poet Danny Earl Simmons will hold a poetry reading as part of the Valley Writers Series at LBCC’s Benton Center Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 6:30 p.m. in room BC-234, 757 NW Polk Ave., Corvallis. Simmons has lived in the Willamette Valley for over 30 years and considers himself an Oregonian. A graduate of Corvallis High School, he is a friend of the Linn-Benton Community College Poetry Club and an active member of Albany Civic Theater. Simmons’ poems have appeared in various journals, such as Naugatuck River Review, Off the Coast, Shadow Road Quarterly, Grey Sparrow, and Verse Wisconsin. LBCC Pesticides Applicator Classes

Pesticide applicator classes, including laws and safety and private applicator classes, will be held at Linn-Benton Community College in November. Designed to prepare senior agriculture workers to take the State of Oregon Department of Agriculture pesticide applicator exam, classes provide in-depth training, including extra coaching in math and calibration skills. Pesticides Laws and Safety, Public and Commercial applications, will be held Nov. 7 and 8 from 8 a.m. to noon at LBCC’s Calapooia Center, room CC-213, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW. Cost is $99. LBCC Hosts Oregon Shakespeare Festival Actors

Oregon Shakespearian Festival actors Benjamin Pelteson and Eduardo Placer will give two free performances on Friday, Nov.8 at Linn-Benton Community College as part of the OSF School Visit Program, which is open to the public. The OSF actors will perform selections from Shakespeare’s Tempest as well as selections from more contemporary plays. The first one-hour show, An Adaptation of The Tempest,” will be from 10 to 10:50 a.m. and features Shakespeare characters from The Tempest, which will be part of the upcoming OSF 2013 – 2014 season. The second show, “To Be or Not To Be (or The Problem of Happiness and How to Achieve It by W. Shakespeare and various other dudes),” will be held from Noon to 12:50 p.m. and features a medley of scenes from Shakespeare and contemporary plays. Lebanon Center Holds Free SHIBA Class Medicare A, B, C & D

Senior Health Insurance Benefits Assistance (SHIBA) will hold a free class that covers the basics of Medicare as well as upcoming changes in 2014. Class is designed to help beneficiaries gain a better understanding of their Medicare benefits and options, and for anyone who will be eligible for Medicare within a few months or is new to Medicare, their spouses and relatives. This one-day class will meet Thursday, Nov. 7 from 10 to 11:50 a.m. at LBCC’s Lebanon Center Annex, 44 Industrial Way. Reservations required by calling 541-812-0849. Linn-Benton Opera Guild Preview: Salome

The Linn-Benton Opera Guild will preview the opera Salome, by Richard Strauss, on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 7:45 p.m. at 303 Benton Hall, Oregon State University campus, Corvallis. OSU music professor Angela Carlson will tell the story of the opera and play recorded excerpts from the score. Admission is free to Linn-Benton Opera Guild members, students of Linn-Benton Community College and OSU. Cost for the general public is $5. Performance dates will be Nov. 1, 7 and 9 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. at the Keller Auditorium, 222 SW Clay, Portland. The opera will be sung in Italian with projected English translations. LBCC Computer Application Classes

The class Computers-2nd Step will be held at the LBCC Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers starting Oct. 31. This class builds on basic computer skills. Forklift Safety Training

Forklift Safety Training will be offered through Business and Employer Services at Linn-Benton Community College Saturday, Nov. 16, from 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the LBCC Albany Campus, IC building, IC-103, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. This eight-hour course will provide four hours of classroom training and four hours of practice on the forklift. Training includes forklift safety, handling and moving loads, principles of lifting, stacking and un-stacking loads and driving with a load. Upon completion of eight hours of training and meeting the requirements, student will receive an award of completion to take to their current or future employer. LBCC Theater Production of “Macbeth – Movement Into Darkness”

Tickets are on sale for Linn-Benton Community College’s production of “Macbeth – Movement Into Darkness” at LBCC’s Russell Tripp Performance Center, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Directed by LBCC theater instructor Dan Stone, this physical theater adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic play tells the tragic story of murder, betrayal and witchcraft entirely through the use of music and movement, with no dialog. Performances are Nov. 1, 2, 7, 8 and 9 at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee Saturday, Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and active military, and $5 for children under 18.  Advanced ticket purchase recommended. Free Pharmacy Technician Information Sessions



LBCC is offering two free Pharmacy Technician Program pre-application information sessions for those interested in training to work as a Pharmacy Technician.

 The sessions will be held Monday, Oct. 28, from 9 to 11 a.m.; and Tuesday, Nov. 12, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the LBCC Lebanon Center, 44 Industrial Way. 

No need to pre-register to attend the session. Attendance at the session is mandatory in order to take the program.

The 18-week Pharmacy Technician Program starts Feb. 3 and runs through June 6, 2014. Skill areas covered include customer service, pharmacy math, pharmacy laws and rules, pharmaceutical vocabulary, prescriptions, billing, insurance, industry software, pharmacology and on-the-job training. Grand Opening for New Advanced Transportation Technology Center

Linn-Benton Community College will hold a Grand Opening for its new Advanced Transportation Technology Center at 2000 Oak Street in Lebanon on Wednesday, Oct. 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. Tours of the new facilities will be given after a brief program, which begins at 5:15 p.m. and is open to the public. The center is the only major broad-spectrum training facility between Seattle and San Francisco for students learning to service alternative fuel vehicles, and will serve as a first step toward creating a base for alternative fuel technology in the Willamette Valley. The facility has state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment including a dynamometer diagnostic tool, the only one of its kind between Vancouver, BC and San Francisco. LBCC automotive students and technicians already in the field will receive training at the center on vehicles that run on compressed natural gas, propane, electric and biodiesel as well as traditional fuel vehicles. LBCC Veterinary Assistant Information Sessions

Two free Veterinary Assistant Program information sessions will be held at Linn-Benton Community College for those interested in training to become a Veterinary Assistant. These pre-application sessions will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 22, from noon to 2 p.m., and Thursday, Nov. 7, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the LBCC Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Calapooia Center, room CC-212. No preregistration needed to attend. Attendance at the information session is mandatory in order to take the program. The 17-week LBCC Veterinary Assistant Program starts Jan. 6 and runs through May 2, 2014. Skill areas covered include basic education and experience in common disease states, commonly used medical and surgical techniques, and an introduction to hospital management, business procedures and radiation safety.   Cost for the program is $4,500. LBCC Driver Education Begins Oct. 14

Drivers Education classes at Linn-Benton Community College begin Oct. 14. The course includes Oregon state mandated 30 hours of classroom instruction, a three-hour parent/student orientation at first meeting plus 12 hours behind-the wheel practice and driver observation.  Registration requirements include completed packet, fee, original driver permit and one photocopy. Students must register at the college. Online registration is not available. Registration packets are available at all centers one week prior to registration or online at www.linnbenton.edu/driver-education. Cost for the course is $259 for ages 17 and under, $429 for ages 18 and over. Class must be dropped 24 hours prior to start date for refund. LBCC’s Driver Education program serves students throughout Linn and Benton counties and is approved by the Oregon Department of Transportation. LBCC GED Testing Changes

Students working on getting their General Education Development (GED) certificate are encouraged to finish their testing as soon as possible. The current version of the GED tests will expire at the end of this year, and will be replaced Jan. 2, 2014 with a new test. To avoid having to start over, students must pass all five tests in reading, science, social studies, math and writing by the end of the year. Linn-Benton Community College offers GED classes to help you prepare to take the tests. You must attend a free two-session orientation before registering for classes. Orientation sessions will be offered the week of October 28, and GED classes will begin the week of November 4. There is a $30 enrollment fee due at registration.
