Beer & Brushes class, July 16 & Aug. 13

The class Beer and Brushes will be held at Conversion Brewing Supply July 16 and again August 13. Explore your creative side while enjoying a local micro brew beer. Class provides step-by-step instruction, supplies, and your first glass of beer. No art experience needed. Hybrid Voices Rising Workshop, July 27 & August 3 

The workshop Hybrid Voices Rising will be offered July 27 and August 3 through LBCC Community Education. This one-day workshop explores the non-linear nature of hybrid writing with focus on collage work, dream journals, favorite songs and supportive writing while sharing exercises as avenues to explore how we express our differences and connect through them. The workshop will be offered Thursday, July 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the LBCC Benton Center, and again Thursday, August 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the LBCC Albany Campus. Cost is $49. Artistic Travel Journaling class starts June 28

A class on how to create a travel journal will be held through LBCC Community Education starting June 28. Whether you are planning a vacation or a staycation, travel journaling can transport your creativity to new places. This fun, accessible class is appropriate for all skill-levels. Artistic Travel Journaling covers the best supplies to travel with, as well as the ins and outs of buying a journal or designing your own. No drawing, sketching or painting skills are required. New classes in Karate and Self Defense start June 27

Karate and self-defense classes will be offered through LBCC Community Education at the Benton Center starting June 27. Shao-Lin Kempo Karate is a traditional martial art incorporating Karate, Kung Fu, and Jiu Jitsu. Learn basic moves while increasing your energy, confidence and self-defense skills. No previous experience necessary. This 10-week class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 1:50 p.m. starting June 27 at LBCC Benton Center, 757 Polk Ave. NW. Cost is $89. A new Self Defense class provides instruction to develop situational awareness and confidence while learning basic self-defense skills, including how to avoid attacks and to determine if a situation will pose a threat. English for Everyday Life I & II starts July 6

The class English for Everyday Life I will be offered through LBCC Community Education starting July 6. This class provides practice with English in the context of real-life situations, with a focus on basic needs such as shopping, going to the doctor and understanding the school system.                                                                                                                          This eight-week class meets Thursdays from 11 to 12:50 p.m. starting July 6 at the LBCC Benton Center. Cost is $99. English for Everyday Life II provides practice with real-life situations, with a focus on reading, writing and pronunciation.  This eight-week class meets Thursdays from 1 to 2:50 p.m. starting July 6 at the LBCC Benton Center. Drone Training class starts July 15

A new drone flying class will be held through LBCC Community Education starting July 15. Learn how to fly drones safely for recreation and commercial use, including how to navigate Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations. Drone Training class covers information for getting your FAA remote pilot certification as well as reviewing common scenarios for drone usage. This two-day class meets Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. starting July 15 at the Infinite Air Center, 525 Aviation Way SE, Albany. Cost is $199. LBCC Summer Programs for Youth, Teens

A variety of summer programs designed for youth and teens will be offered through LBCC Community Education. APP ATTACK. Dive into making your own apps, just like the ones you'd see on the App Store! Using a specialized app & game development tool, students will dive into the world of web-based (HTML5) mobile apps. In addition to learning the basics of mobile app design and game development, you will also see firsthand how the world of App publishing functions. Student-created apps will be accessible on a private site and can be played on any mobile device or computer. No prior experience is necessary and students do not need to own a smartphone or tablet to take the class. Better Bones & Balance® starts June 28

Better Bones and Balance class will be offered through LBCC Community Education starting June 28. Improve your balance and coordination, reduce your risk for falls, and see an increase in muscle tone and overall body fitness. Based on OSU Bone Research Lab studies, this exercise program has been shown to slow the rate of bone loss in adults of all ages. After combined 80-Years, Two Long-time Staff Members Retire

After more than 80 years of combined service, Paulette Myers, left, and Teresa Patterson are retiring. With more than 80 years of combined service, long-time staff members Teresa Patterson and Paulette Myers are retiring, capping careers of 40 and 43 years respectively. Teresa started work as part-time, non-contract in the college registration office when she was 16, working through her junior and senior year at South Albany High School. Back then, the Registration office was in the Calapooia Center, where Human Resources is today. After graduating high school, Teresa was offered a full-time position in Registration, a job she held for 20 years before moving into her current position as IT Specialist with Information Services. Some of her coworkers call her the “Banner Queen,” since she was part of the original team that helped bring Banner online. Teresa’s last day was May 31, but she will continue to work part-time non-contracted (coming full-circle) through the end of this y

Tax Practitioners Board approves Basic 80-Hour Income Tax Course

Linn-Benton Community College has been approved by the State Board of Tax Practitioners to offer basic tax preparation courses starting in the 2017-2018 academic year. Students who successfully complete the Basic 80-Hour Income Tax courses will be qualified to take the state board Licensed Tax Preparer (LTP) certification exam. LTP certification will provide students the authorization to work as a licensed tax preparer in Oregon. LBCC joins a handful of other Oregon community colleges and several private tax preparers to offer the basic tax education courses. LBCC’s courses were approved by the Higher Education Coordinating Commission this spring. LBCC will offer the four-credit Income Tax Accounting I (BA 256) spring term 2018, followed by the four-credit Income Tax Accounting II (BA 257) fall term 2018, allowing students to take the LTP exam in December in time for tax season. LBCC Offers QuickBooks Classes


Learn the basics of QuickBooks in classes held by Linn-Benton Community College Small Business Development Center.
 Guided Tour QuickBooks is designed for those with no previous experience with a computer-based accounting system. Class meets June 27 and 29 from 2 to 4 p.m. in the LBCC Forum building, room F-202, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Cost for this non-credit class is $89.  QuickBooks I helps you set up an accounting system using QuickBooks. This five-week class meets for five sessions on Tuesday and Thursday beginning July 11 in LBCC’s Forum building, room F-202. Choose from the afternoon session, from 2 to 4 pm, or the evening session, from 6 to 8 pm. Cost for this non-credit class is $219.

ATTC Holds “Dyno Day” Open House June 10

A “Dyno Day” open house showcasing the LBCC Advanced Transportation Technology Center will be held Saturday, June 10, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the center at 2000 W. Oak St., Lebanon. Tour the facility and LBCC’s automotive technology program, with demonstrations on the program’s dynamometer and opportunities to purchase three pulls on the dyno, which includes the use of Pro Tree and quarter-mile times. Benton Center Ceramics Sale June 9

LBCC’s Benton Center Spring Ceramic Sale will be held Friday, June 9 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the center’s ceramics studio, 757 NW Polk Avenue, Corvallis. Handcrafted pottery by LBCC ceramic instructors, students and volunteers including raku, high fire, salt fire and wood fire pieces. A portion of all sales supports the ceramics studio. 49th Annual Commencement Ceremony June 15

The 49th annual Linn-Benton Community College Commencement ceremony will be held Thursday, June 15 at 7 p.m. at the Linn County Fair and Expo Willamette Event Center in Albany. LBCC will award 911 degrees and certificates to 727 students this year. In addition, approximately 90 students will be awarded LBCC’s General Educational Development GED certificates. Graduates should plan to arrive no later than 5:45 p.m. at the Santiam Building behind the Willamette Event Center. Doors open for seating at 6 p.m. No tickets needed to attend. No strollers or backpacks. Carry bags will be checked.
