College Student Computer Survival 101

Learn how to use computers to achieve better grades in college in the class College Student Computer Survival 101 held at Linn-Benton Community College summer term. This two-week class focuses on Microsoft programs. Learn how to weed through information and use computers to accomplish the tasks assigned by your instructor. Class will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4 to 6:50 p.m. beginning July 11 in Mackenzie Hall, room MKH-211. Cost for this non-credit class is $45 with a $3 lab fee. Pre-registration is required. LBCC ROV Team Takes 3rd Place in MATE Competition

LBCC's Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) team took 3rd place in the Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) 10th Annual International Underwater Robotics Competition held at the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, June 16-18. The team competed against ROV's from around the world, placing 3rd behind Purdue University and a team from California. LBCC’s team was one of only two teams to successfully complete all of the missions twice. The final scores were based on a combination of the mission scores and scores for the team’s technical report, poster and oral examination. LBCC and OIT to Sign Academic Agreement

Linn-Benton Community College and Oregon Institute of Technology will sign a dual enrollment agreement at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 15 in LBCC’s Calapooia Center Board Room. The dual enrollment agreement will allow students to become concurrently enrolled at each institution. Students who intend on obtaining a bachelor’s degree at OIT can maximize credit transfer and gain access to resources including financial aid, advising and student services at both institutions. LBCC and Oregon Tech have standing partnerships aligning curriculum in diagnostic imaging , apprenticeship and machine tool technology. The dual enrollment agreement will encourage future alignment of additional academic programs. LBCC Supervisor HR 101 Class

The professional development class Things Every Supervisor Has to Know: HR 101 will be offered by Linn-Benton Community College Business and Employer Services on Tuesday, July 26 from 8 a.m. to Noon at the LBCC Albany campus, Fireside Room, Calapooia Center building, room CC-211, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW. This basic human resources class will provide information and strategies to prevent liability in the workplace. Participants will learn about employment discrimination laws including Title VII, ADA, ADEA, FMLA, how to prevent the creation of a hostile work environment, how to create a paper trail for poor performance, and how to avoid inappropriate and discriminatory interview questions. LBCC Receives Second Year of National Science Foundation Grant

The National Science Foundation awarded Linn-Benton Community College’s Mechatronics Program with the second year of a three-year Advanced Technological Education grant. NSF approved the release of $241,564 of additional funding for the second year of the grant, bringing the total awarded to the college to date to $506,759. The Mechatronics Program received the NSF ATE grant in 2010. According to Denis Green, Mechatronics and Industrial Maintenance faculty and department chair, the overall purpose of the grant is to expand the scope and reach of the program. “We are expanding our teaching of sustainable energy in wind, solar, biofuels, and biomass,” said Green. “In tandem with sustainable energy, we are emphasizing energy efficiency, believing the most cost effective way to save energy is to use less of it.” The reach of the program is being expanded through blended learning offerings, creating pathway certificates and recruiting high school students into Mechatronics training, sai

LBCC Presents Alumni Awards, Distinguished Citizen Award, and Honorary Degree

Linn-Benton Community College honored several community members with awards including Distinguished Alumni, a Distinguished Citizen and an Honorary Degree at its Commencement held June 9. Lisa Charpilloz Hanson, Deputy Director, Oregon Department of Agriculture in Salem, and Denise Soto, Soto Law Firm in Albany, were honored with LBCC Distinguished Alumna awards. Hanson completed an associate of general studies from LBCC and a bachelor of science in Agriculture and Resource Economics from Oregon State University. Soto completed an associate of arts degree from LBCC, graduated Magna Cum Laude at Oregon State University and earned a Doctorate of Jurisprudence from Willamette University. Professionally, Hanson has been involved in policy development and implementation for agricultural, environmental and natural resources with state and federal agencies. When Christina Horne got her second shot she was ready for it. "I knew I wanted to go back to school," said Horne, who will be among the LBCC graduates honored tonight at the Linn County Fair & Expo Center. "I was ready to handle the work this time." Offers Driver Education Classes Summer Term

Several Driver Education classes are being offered summer term through Linn-Benton Community College Albany Community Education. The five-week course includes Oregon state mandated 30 hours of classroom instruction, a three-hour parent/student orientation at first meeting plus 12 hours behind-the wheel practice and driver observation. First class session starts June 20. Registration requirements include completed packet, fee, original driver permit and one photocopy. Registration packets are available at all centers one week prior to registration or online at www.linnbenton.edu/go/albany-community-ed/driver-education. Cost for the course is $259 for ages 17 and under, $429 for ages 18 and over. Class must be dropped 24 hours prior to start date for refund. Beginning Swing Dance Class

Learn how to dance swing in the class Beginning Swing Dance offered through LBCC Albany Community Education this summer. This class is for those with little or no experience dancing. No partner is required. Class will start with the basics of Single-Time Swing, one of the easiest and most useful forms of swing dances to learn. This nine-week class will meet on Fridays from 7 to 8:20 p.m. beginning July 1 at the Albany Senior Center, 489 Water Avenue NW. Cost for this non-credit class is $48 with a $3 lab fee. Tractor and Farm Machinery Safety Class

Tractor and Farm Machinery Safety training will be held at Linn-Benton Community College’s Albany campus beginning June 16. Geared for farm workers ages 14 to 18, the course is developed and operated with the assistance of the OSU Extension Service in accordance with federal regulations. Students and parents must sign a Liability Waiver/Indemnification form within 24 hours of registration. Class will meet Thursday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5:50 p.m. beginning June 16 to June 18. Cost for this non-credit course is $79.50 plus a $20 lab fee. Preregistration is required. Learn how to develop your classroom presence and enthusiasm for teaching through better communication skills in the class The Teacher as Instructor and Performer offered through LBCC Albany Community Education. Make the material come alive for your students by presenting a more visual and auditory experience. Instructor Rod Davidson has 25 years professional acting experience in film, television and theatre. Learn about the dynamic connection between acting on stage in front of an audience and teaching in a classroom, including how to hold their attention, educate and inspire. This four-week class will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 11:20 a.m. beginning June 21. Cost for this non-credit class is $57 with a $3 lab fee. Pre-registration is required. LBCC Pack the Perfect Picnic Class

Learn how to make three different picnic meals that can be packed for a wonderful picnic in the class Pack the Perfect Picnic offered through LBCC Albany Community Education. This one-day class will meet on Saturday, June 25, from 1 p.m. to 4:50 p.m. in the college culinary kitchen, second floor of the Calapooia Center building. Recreational Caving Series of Classes

Learn the sport of recreational caving in this series of classes offered through LBCC Albany Community Education this summer. Caving experts will guide students in this lecture and lab series to three caves in Washington: Ole’s Cave and Lake Cave near Cougar, and Poacher’s Cave in Trout Lake. Students can choose to take any or all trips. The one-hour mandatory orientation introduces the student to the basic knowledge, skills and tools needed for proper caving activities. Students will also learn about cave formation and ecology. Carpools will be organized for each cave trip. Headgear is provided. The first class in the series, Ole’s Cave, will meet on Wednesday, June 22 from 7 p.m. to 7:50 p.m. for the one-hour mandatory orientation, and on Saturday, June 25, from 7 a.m. to 7:50 p.m. for the field trip to the cave. LBCC 43rd Annual Commencement Ceremony

The 43rd annual Linn-Benton Community College Commencement Ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 9 at the Linn County Fair and Expo Center in the Willamette Event Center in Albany. Graduates should plan to arrive no later than 5:45 p.m. at the Santiam Building at the Expo Center. Doors open for seating at 6 p.m. No tickets are needed to attend the ceremony. LBCC will award 984 degrees and certificates to 835 candidates this year. Approximately 250 students completed LBCC’s General Educational Development preparation program and will receive their certificates at commencement.
