Lebanon Center - GED/Adult Basic Education

GED and Adult Basic Education classes will be held starting in July at Linn-Benton Community College Lebanon Center, 44 Industrial Way. Improve your skills in reading, writing or math to improve your score on the Computerized Placement Test or to prepare for the GED test. Free orientations will be held at the Lebanon Center June 10 and 11 or July 1 and 2 from 9 to 11:50 a.m. or from 6 to 8:50 p.m. It is mandatory to attend both days of orientation before registering for classes.

 A $30 enrollment fee is due at registration. Class will meet on Monday and Wednesday beginning July 8 at the LBCC Lebanon Center.

Benton Center Pottery Sale & Show

The LBCC Benton Center Pottery Show and Sale will be held Friday, June 7 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the center ceramics studio, 757 NW Polk Avenue, Corvallis. LBCC ceramic faculty members and students will showcase their work and offer for sale raku, high fire, salt fire and wood fire pieces. Selection includes vessels, vases and a wide variety of decorative items, tableware and sculptures. A portion of all sales will be used to purchase studio equipment. LBCC Driver Education Class

Drivers Education class will be offered this summer through Linn-Benton Community College’s Lebanon Center. This ODOT approved program includes parent/student orientation at first meeting, 30 hours of classroom instruction, plus 12 hours on the road. Registration packets are available online at http://www.linnbenton.edu/driver-education and at all LBCC registrations counters. This five-week class meets Mondays and Wednesdays, 9 a.m. to 11:50 a.m., beginning June 24 at the LBCC Lebanon Center, 44 Industrial Way. Your completed packet and fee, along with your original drivers permit and one copy, are due at registration. For refunds, class must be dropped 24 hours prior to start date. Cost for students with a permit who are under 18 is $259. For students over 18, cost is $429. LBCC Parenting Education Names Educator of the Year

The Parenting Success Network and Linn-Benton Community College has named Joanne Hunter as Parenting Educator of the Year. Hunter, from Corvallis, received the award during LBCC’s annual Parenting Educator Celebration held Thursday at the college. Hunter teaches Live and Learn with Your Preschooler classes at LBCC’s Benton Center, and has provided parenting education for more than twenty years. She is known for using a wide variety of techniques to create an environment that meets the needs of diverse families. Hunter says that she works to “awaken a sense of awe and wonder in both parents and children, whereby families can simply ‘be’ and ‘enjoy’ the moment together, and for parents to know that they will always be their primary educator.” There is little formal training available to learn the skills and abilities that make parenting easier and more successful,

LBCC Summer Term Fitness Classes

Start or continue a fitness routine by taking a fitness class through Linn-Benton Community College this summer. LBCC offers a variety of exercise classes in Lebanon, Scio, Sweet Home and Brownsville each term.  Classes include: Aquatic Fitness, Better Bones and Balance, Body Toning & Aerobics, Boot Camp, Cardio Strength and Balance, Cardio Strength and Tone, Easy Cardio, Easy Does It Exercise, Power Yoga, Rock'n to the Core, T'ai Chi, Yoga, Yoga Warriors, Zumba and Zumba Toning. Open registration begins on May 28. Classes start the week of June 24. Tractor & Farm Machinery Safety Training

There is still time to register for Tractor and Farm Machinery Safety training at Linn-Benton Community College, which begins June 13. Geared for farm workers ages 14 to 18, the course is developed and operated with the assistance of the OSU Extension Service in accordance with federal regulations. Students and parents must sign a Liability Waiver/Indemnification form within 24 hours of registration. The three-day class session runs Thursday through Saturday, June 13-15, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. on the LBCC campus, Forum building room F-113, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Cost for this non-credit class is $76.50 plus a $20 lab fee. Preregistration is required. Students must be at least 14 to register. Spring Choir Concert "Voices United in Song!"

The Linn-Benton Community College choirs will perform their spring concert  “Voices United In Song!” on Thursday, June 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the LBCC Russell Tripp Performance Center, Takena Hall, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. LBCC Director of Choral Activities James Reddan will conduct the performances of the Concert Choir, Re-Choired Element Chamber Choir, Women’s Ensemble, Blue Light Special and the Sirens. 5th Annual "Albany Sings!" Choir Concert

Celebrate choral music in the Willamette Valley at the 5th annual “Albany Sings!” choir concert Thursday, May 30 at 7 p.m. at the Linn County Expo Willamette Hall Event Center, 3700 Knox Butte Road, Albany. Approximately 350 singers from Calapooia, Memorial, and North Albany Middle Schools, Timber Ridge School, West and South Albany High Schools, and the Linn-Benton Community College choirs will perform a plethora of choral works sure to knock your socks off! After individual performances, the ensembles will combine to perform Baba Yetu, a Swahili piece. LBCC Volleyball Players Sign Letters of Intent

Lindsay Verboort Miah Boeder Whitney Hightower Linn-Benton Community College will send three of its volleyball players to the next level of play this fall after the players signed letters of intent Monday. Whitney Hightower, elementary education major and 2011 Santiam Christian High School graduate, will play libero for Minot State University. Miah Boeder, elementary education major and 2011 West Albany graduate, will play opposite for Corban University. Biology major Lindsay Verboort, 2011 South Salem High graduate, will be a setter for Southern Oregon University. Four additional players have been accepted to attend Oregon State University: Teague Teece, agriculture sciences major; Emma Richards, animal sciences, pre veterinary major; Katie Swayne, interior design major; and Kayla Swayze, graphic design major.

LBCC Honors Distinguished Alumni

Mitch Coleman Ethan Bergman Ethan Bergman and Mitch Coleman received Distinguished Alumni Awards from Linn-Benton Community College at a ceremony held May 8. Bergman, an Ellensburg, Washington resident who grew up in Salem, is an associate dean of professional studies and professor of dietetics and sports nutrition at Central Washington University. He earned an associate degree with a focus in biology and zoology from LBCC in 1972, and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in biology from Eastern Oregon University, a master’s in biology from the University of Oregon, a master’s in interdisciplinary studies from Western Oregon University, and a doctorate in nutrition from Washington State University. Bergman has made substantial contributions to his field through his teaching and research work in the area of school meal research, and has written grants to fund research on the health effects of school lunches on children, the effects of caffeine on calcium levels of

LBCC Art Student Juried Show Winners

Eighteen students received awards at Linn-Benton Community College’s Annual Art Student Juried show at a reception held Wednesday, May 8, in the college’s North Santiam Hall Galleries. Angela Purviance of Philomath was awarded Best of Show for here mixed-media piece “Gossip” by juror Yuji Hiratsuka, a renowned print-maker and art professor at Oregon State University. Purviance also received the Active Minds Award for another mixed media, titled “Expectations.” The juror also bestowed Juror’s Choice Awards to Genevieve Martinusen of Springfield for her pastel titled “Pears” and to Rosalie Lingo of Corvallis for her oil painting titled “Thin Skin.” Lingo also received a Freedom of Expression Award for her oil painting titled “Oh, Hon.” Additional award winners were: •Johnny Beaver of Corvallis, the President’s Purchase Award and the Carol Schaafsma Award of Merit in Painting; •Morgan Gregory of Shedd, the Carol Schaafsma Award of Merit in Photography, and also the Wise Photo Printing Awa

LBCC Offers Forklift Safety Training

Forklift Safety Training will be offered through Business and Employer Services at Linn-Benton Community College on Saturday, June 1, from 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the LBCC Albany Campus, IC building, room 103, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. This eight-hour course will provide four hours of classroom training and four hours of practice on the forklift. Training includes forklift safety, handling and moving loads, principles of lifting, stacking and un-stacking loads and driving with a load. Upon completion of eight hours of training and meeting the requirements, student will receive an award of completion to take to their current or future employer. Photoshop Elements I Class

Learn the basics of digital photo editing in the class Photoshop Elements I held through LBCC Albany Community Education. Learn how to edit your digital photographs including how to correct exposure, contrast and color problems, and how to crop and save for the web. This five-week class will meet on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 7:50 p.m. beginning May 14 in McKenzie Hall, room MKH-209, LBCC Albany campus, 6500 SW Pacific Blvd. Cost for this non-credit class is $39 with a $2 lab fee. LBCC Valley Writers Series Hosts Author/Poet Shaindel Beers

Shaindel Beers Author and poet Shaindel Beers will hold classroom readings and discussions at Linn-Benton Community College Friday, May 17 from 10 to 10:50 a.m. in North Santiam Hall, room 110, and from 1 to 1:50 p.m. in North Santiam Hall room 209, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Performing Arts Play: Steve Martin’s “The Underpants”

LBCC Performing Arts presents Steve Martin’s adaptation of “The Underpants” May 9-11 and May 16-18. Theobald Maske has an unusual problem: his wife's underpants won't stay on. When her underpants fall to her ankles right in the middle of town, a public scandal ensues. Mortified, Theobald swears to keep his wife at home until she can find some less unruly undies. Amid this chaos, Theobald is trying to rent a room in their flat, but the prospective lodgers have some underlying surprises of their own. Steve Martin brings his comic genius and sophisticated literary style to Carl Sternheim's classic 1910 farce. LBCC theater instructor Dan Stone directs the play, which contains adult situations and humor. Performance dates are May 9, 10, 11, 16, 17 and 18 at 7:30 p.m., and May 11 at 2 p.m. (ASL performance). Free Medicare parts A, B, C & D Class

A free class covering the basics of Medicare parts A, B, C & D will be held by Senior Health Insurance Benefits Assistance (SHIBA) Thursday May 16 from 10 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. at the LBCC Sweet Home Center, 1661 Long St. This class is designed for anyone who will be eligible for Medicare within a few months or is new to Medicare, or for current beneficiaries who would like a better understanding of their Medicare benefits and options.
