Ethan Bergman and Mitch Coleman received
Distinguished Alumni Awards from Linn-Benton Community College at a ceremony held May 8.

Bergman, an Ellensburg, Washington resident who grew up in Salem, is an associate dean of professional studies and professor of dietetics and sports nutrition at Central Washington University. He earned an associate degree with a focus in biology and zoology from LBCC in 1972, and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in biology from Eastern Oregon University, a master’s in biology from the University of Oregon, a master’s in interdisciplinary studies from Western Oregon University, and a doctorate in nutrition from Washington State University.

Bergman has made substantial contributions to his field through his teaching and research work in the area of school meal research, and has written grants to fund research on the health effects of school lunches on children, the effects of caffeine on calcium levels of women, and to evaluate diabetes in central Washington farmworkers. He currently serves as president of the American Association of Dietetics.

Coleman, a former Philomath resident who resides in Dayton, has been an agriculture sciences instructor at Dayton High School for 23 years. He earned his associate’s degree in agricultural science from LBCC in 1987, and went on to earn his bachelor and master degrees in agricultural education, with a minor in agriculture business and economics, from Oregon State University.

Coleman has been named teacher of the year numerous times by the Oregon Vocational Agricultural Teachers Association, and has received the Milken Family Foundation National educator of the Year award. Over the years, he has coached numerous state and national champion agriculture teams, with his agricultural sales teams winning back-to-back national titles in 2011 and 2012.

Coleman currently serves on the Dayton City Council and is a member of the Yamhill County Mental Health Committee for Children, the Yamhill County Livestock Association, and the Yamhill County Auction Committee. He also serves as a junior high Sunday school teacher, and has coached McMinnville Parks and Recreation basketball teams. Past service includes the Dayton Wetland Rehabilitation Program, and the Dayton Nature Trail Construction project.

LBCC’s Distinguished Alumni Award was established in 2005 to honor alumni who have demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in their profession and/or through service to their community.
