LBCC Names Distinguished Alumni

Sara Krainik Dan Segel Linn-Benton Community College has named former students Sara Krainik and Dan Segel as this year’s LBCC Distinguished Alumni. The pair will be recognized at a Scholarship and Honor’s Reception held April 27 at the college. Krainik, of Corvallis, is coordinator of Corvallis Arts Center ArtsCare Program. She attended LBCC from 1989 to 1991, taking graphic design and art classes. Segel, of Portland, is president and co-founder of the Corvallis Knights Baseball team, and chairman of the board of the Knights Baseball Club. Segel attended and played baseball at the University of Washington in 1984, then transferred to LBCC, attending and playing baseball from 1985 to 1986. He transferred to NW Missouri State, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and management, and earned all-Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association honors. LBCC Community Education Spring Classes

Personal Computer Essentials This is the perfect class for those who have never touched a computer before and want hands-on, step-by-step instruction. Class goes at an easy pace and introduces working with Windows 7 and a brief introduction to email and the internet. LBCC Pesticides Laws and Safety class offered in Spanish

Pesticide Laws and Safety class for Spanish speakers will be held April 7 and 8 at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Designed to prepare senior agriculture workers to take the State of Oregon Department of Agriculture pesticide applicator exam, classes provide in-depth training, including extra coaching in math and calibration skills. This course may also be used for recertification credits. Class meets April 7 and 8, 8 a.m. to 12 noon both days at LBCC’s Calapooia Center, room CC-103. Cost is $119. LBCC Holds Free Athletics Play Day for K-5th Students

A free Athletics Play Day for area youth in grades K-5th will be held Friday, April 8, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Linn-Benton Community College’s Activities Center gym, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Meet LBCC student athletes for a variety of games including basketball, volleyball, soccer, mini golf, juggling, plate spinning, building Rube Goldberg machines, and even some quidditch! Get your photo taken with LBCC’s mascot, Rocky Roadrunner, and earn prizes for completing activities. This free event is open to children in grades K-5th grade. LBCC Offers QuickBooks Classes

Learn the basics of QuickBooks in classes offered through Linn-Benton Community College Small Business Development Center. Guided Tour QuickBooks is a four-hour class designed for those with no previous experience using a computer-based accounting system.  Class meets April 5 and 7 from 2 to 3:50 p.m. in the LBCC Forum building, room F-202, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Cost for this non-credit class is $79.   QuickBooks I class is designed to help you set up an accounting system using QuickBooks 2015. This 10-hour class will meet April 14, 21, 28, May 5 and 12, from 2 to 3:50 p.m. in the Forum building, room F-202. Cost for this non-credit class is $219. Community Art classes in Albany, Corvallis, and Lebanon

A variety of art classes, including a few new ones, are being offered through LBCC Community Education starting March 28. In the new class “Art & Etsy,” learn to polish your craft and sell your art. Bring your own product to polish up, or bring to life a new creation. Immerse yourself in product design and then create a catchy shop name and an inviting online presence. This one-day class meets Thursday, April 7 from 1 to 3:50 p.m. at the LBCC Lebanon Center, 44 Industrial Way, and Friday, April 15 from 1 to 3:50 p.m. at the LBCC Benton Center, 757 Polk Ave, Corvallis, and Saturday, April 16 from 10 to 12:50 p.m. at the LBCC Albany Campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW. LBCC Foreign Language, new classes offered spring term

Learn a foreign language or brush-up on your language skills, including sign language and a few new classes held through Community Education at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. The new class Italian for Travelers offers basic language skills with emphasis on conversation, both speaking and listening to Italian in tourist situations, meeting people, shopping, directions, restaurants, hotels, and more. This eight-week class is held Tuesdays starting April 5 from 6 to 7:20 p.m. Cost is $89. Spanish for Seniors, Level A/B helps you practice Spanish conversation with essential words, songs and phrases. Learn past, present, and future verb tenses. The LBCC Board of Education voted Wednesday to approve a tuition rate increase of 6 percent for both in-state and out-of-state, and 8 percent for international, effective summer term 2016. The increase will be used to help cover current program expenses, expand services, and help develop an ending fund balance of 10 percent. After two years without an increase, the projection for future tuition increases includes a 5 percent increase next year, and 3 percent annual increases after that. In-state tuition for 2016-17 school year will be $99.43 per credit hour, up from $93.80. Out-of-state tuition will be $231.12, up from $214, and international tuition will be $282.02, up from $251.80. LBCC Student Named to Junior College Livestock Judging All American Team

Linn-Benton Community College agricultural major Lindsey McPeake has been named to the 2015-16 Junior College Livestock Judging All American Team.  The award recognizes the top 15 judging students in the nation and is based on the student’s judging ability and academic GPA.  McPeake, from Bend, has a 3.63 GPA and will graduate in June with an associate’s degree in agricultural business management . She is the first member of LBCC’s Livestock Judging Team to be named to the Junior College All American Team, which takes into account contest results from competitions in Kansas City, Louisville, Denver and Houston. McPeake plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in agriculture business management.

Pet Portrait Painting Class Starts March 29

Learn how to paint your favorite pet in the class “Pet Portrait Painting” held through LBCC Community Education starting March 29. Paint your pup, cat or any furry friend using your photo in this creative class. No experience necessary. Two new photography classes will be held at the LBCC Benton Center starting March 29. "Adobe Photoshop Lightroom I" provides one easy application for managing, adjusting, and presenting large volumes of digital photographs. Learn tips, techniques and hands-on activities will help you become more productive and enjoy great photos. LBCC Foundations of Business Success Class

The class Foundations of Business Success will be held through the Small Business Development Center at Linn-Benton Community College beginning April 5. Learn how to create and assess a business plan for a start-up or new business in this 10-week course.  Other topics include: financial management, pricing, cash flow, marketing, sales, legal topics, insurance needs, bookkeeping systems, market research, and exploring the lifestyle of a business owner. LBCC offers Wildland Firefighting Class

A class in basic wildland firefighting will be held at Linn-Benton Community College starting April 22. This five-day class meets April 22, 23, 24, 30 and May 1 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at LBCC, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Upon class completion, students receive a certificate, which may be beneficial when applying for positions with private wildland firefighting contractors, the Oregon Department of Forestry, the US Forest Service, or rural and city fire departments. LBCC Students Named to OCCA All Oregon Academic Team

Taylor Megy Chelsey Mick Two Linn-Benton Community College students have been named to the Oregon Community College Association All Oregon Academic Team. Economics major Taylor Megy, of Corvallis, and psychology and political science dual major Chelsey Mick, of Corvallis, will be honored at a luncheon with Governor Kate Brown April 27. Megy is an active member of LBCC Phi Theta Kappa Honor Roll Society, and serves as an intern with the Oregon legislature and as a member of the college Progression Management Council. He is a member of the LBCC ROV Club and the Board Game Club, and volunteers at Linn-Benton Food Share. Mick is also an active member of LBCC Phi Theta Kappa and is part of the LBCC Student Government. She is founder and officer LBCC’s Human and Civil Rights Club, and is an active member in several college clubs including Gay Straight Alliance and Active Minds, and serves as a psychology and sociology tutor. Driver Education Class Registration is Open

Reserve a seat now for Driver Education courses held in March and April through Linn-Benton Community College Community Education. Skills participants receive can be life saving. Course includes Oregon State mandated 30 hours of classroom instruction, a one-time parent/student orientation plus 12 hours behind-the wheel practice and driver observation. Classes will be held in Albany, Corvallis and Sweet Home. Cost for the course is $265 for ages 17 and under, $445 for ages 18 and over. Free Going Into Business Seminar

LBCC High School Industrial Skills Contest Winners Announced

Albany, OR; Approximately 220 students from 21 Oregon high schools, including from as far away as Baker City, competed in the annual High School Industrial Skills Contest held March 3 at Linn-Benton Community College in Albany. Students competed in contests for commuter aided drafting and design (CADD), machine tool milling and turning and several types of welding technology.
