Forklift Safety Training will be offered through Business and Employer Services at Linn-Benton Community College on Saturday, June 2, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the LBCC Albany Campus, Industrial C building, room IC-106, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW. This eight-hour course will provide four hours of classroom training and four hours of practice on the forklift. Training includes forklift safety, handling and moving loads, principles of lifting, stacking and unstacking loads and driving with a load. Cost for the course is $149 and includes all materials. LBCC Performing Arts will present its unique take on the Greek tragedies of war in the play “The Agamemnon: Conquest-Revenge-Ritual.” Sneak peak here:  http://youtu.be/3sAO1tkDIqc Set 60-years into a post-apocalyptic future in a society that needs rebuilding, The Agamemnon is a retelling of the Trojan War and the tragedies of war, reverting to the old ways and religions. LBCC theater director Dan Stone aims to produce Greek theater such as it was in ancient times, but with relevance to today’s audience.  In this production he explores the world of myth and ritual by producing five traditional Greek tragedies: Iphigenia at Aulis, Hecuba, The Trojan Women, Agamemnon and Electra . The Linn-Benton Opera Guild will preview the opera Candide, by Leonard Bernstein , on Tuesday, May 8 at 7:45 p.m. at 303 Benton Hall, Oregon State University campus, Corvallis. Angela Carlson, OSU Music Department, will tell the story of the opera and play recorded excerpts from the score. Admission is free to Linn-Benton Opera Guild members, students of Linn-Benton Community College and OSU. Cost for the general public is $5. Performance dates will be May 11, 17 and 19, at 7:30 p.m. and May 13 at 2 p.m. at the Keller Auditorium, 222 SW Clay, Portland. The opera will be sung in English with projections above the screen. Culinary Arts student Seth Baker Second-year culinary arts student Seth Baker won the 8 th annual LBCC Culinary Arts Copper Chef competition, held April 25 in the college kitchen. The 25-year-old Independence resident won for his culinary creation of steamed clams with Madeira wine, onion, garlic and bacon confit; oven-fried salmon with red potatoes, roasted vegetables and red wine; and butter sauce.  The first-place prize included a copper Fondue pot, a jar of duck fat cooking oil, and a cookbook on sauces.  Baker’s competition included second-year culinary students Robert Bowers, Albany; Chris Faytinger, Corvallis; Eric Lemerande, Albany and Lawson Wakeman, Albany. Training for the Oregon Green Technology Certificate will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College beginning June 25. Oregon Green Tech is a federally funded program designed to prepare entry-level workers with foundational skills for a variety of industries associated with or that support green jobs. Students will learn skills in green occupations including green energy production; manufacturing, construction, installation, monitoring and repair of equipment for solar, wind, wave and bio-energy; building retro-fitting; process recycling; hazardous materials removal work and others. Through a combination of on-line instruction, hands-on labs, and, in some areas, fieldwork, students in the program will earn 36-45 credits–depending on the general education and elective courses offered at each college. The class “Backyard Woodworking Projects” will be held though LBCC Albany Community Education beginning May 1. Learn how to make projects such as yard furniture, small garden sheds, patio planters, tree benches and more in this five-week class. An in-class safety orientation will be given prior to tool use. “Greece: A Study in Contrasting Views,” an exhibit of photographs by Frossene King of Corvallis, is on exhibit through May 11 in the Calapooia Center Gallery at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 SW Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. King’s photographs, which show the economic turmoil in contemporary Greece set against its ancient culture, were made last summer while she was in a study abroad program in Athens. “Each day our drawing class would walk to ancient archeological sites and picturesque landscapes to sketch the beauty of Greece in the warm summer sun,” King said. “On the way home, however, I saw a much different view–one under great pressure and strife.” The exhibit includes about 20 photographs taken with an iPhone and small point-and-shoot camera that document the demonstrations and social upheaval currently underway in a country suffering from high unemployment, government budget cuts and a depressed economy. LBCC will host the 6th annual African American Youth Leadership Conference, to be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 10 in the Forum building. More than 250 middle and high school students are expected for the conference, including students from Albany and Corvallis. A fire line safety refresher course designed for wild land firefighters and forest service workers holding Incident Command System qualifications requiring fire-training certification will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College on Sunday, April 29. The RT130 Fire Safety Refresher trains participants to recognize and mitigate risk, maintain safe and effective practices, and to reduce accidents and near misses. Students will practice deploying new generation fire shelters.
