LBCC Offers Driver Education Classes Winter Term

Several Driver Education classes are being offered winter term through Linn-Benton Community College Albany Community Education.

The course includes Oregon state mandated 30 hours of classroom instruction, a three-hour parent/student orientation at first meeting plus 12 hours behind-the wheel practice and driver observation.

Registration requirements include completed packet, fee, original driver permit and one photocopy. Registration packets are available at all centers one week prior to registration or online at www.linnbenton.edu/driver-education.

First class session starts Jan. 6. Cost for the course is $259 for ages 17 and under, $429 for ages 18 and over. Class must be dropped 24 hours prior to start date for refund.

Home & Garden Classes

A variety of home and garden classes will be offered Linn-Benton Community College’s Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers winter term.

The free"Winter Gardening Series” will help you sharpen your gardening skills. This eight-week series taught by OSU Master Gardeners covers a wide variety of subjects of interest to the home gardener, with a different topic covered each week.

Series meets Thursdays from Noon to 12:50 p.m. beginning Jan. 9. List of topics is available at the LBCC Lebanon Center.

Not your typical gardening class, the "Effortless Gardening Workshop" offers instruction in the easy movements of the Feldenkrais Method of movement using tools and equipment with less pain.

This workshop meets two Saturdays, Jan. 11 and 18, from 9 to 11:20 a.m. at the Lebanon Center Annex, 44 Industrial Way. Cost is $24. Workshop will also be held in Sweet Home at the Steelhead Fitness Center beginning Feb. 22. Cost is $29.

LBCC Lebanon Center Dog Training

"Dog Obedience" and “Puppy Kindergarten” classes will be held through the Linn-Benton Community College Lebanon Center starting Jan. 9.

“Dog Obedience” covers basic commands and equipment, socialization, rewarding good behavior, breaking bad behavior, games and tricks, and responsible pet ownership. Veterinary shot records and dog history form are required.

This 10-week class will meet at the Lebanon Senior Center, 80 Tangent St., Thursdays from 6:30-7:20 p.m. beginning Jan. 9. Cost is $39.

"Puppy Kindergarten" is designed specifically for puppies 16-weeks and younger that are not fully vaccinated. Class will focus on walking on a leash, appropriate interaction with other dogs of the same age and appropriate play.

This eight-week class meets at the Lebanon Senior Center Thursdays from 5:30-6:20 p.m. beginning Jan. 9. Cost is $39.

Pain Relief Now Class

The class "Pain Relief Now" is being offered by the LBCC Lebanon Center starting Jan. 9.

Class introduces self-help techniques for relief of musculoskeletal pain and addresses pain symptoms in your muscle groups and joints, and for arthritis. Learn active isolated stretch techniques to enhance joint function and return to a more useful movement pattern.

This six-week class meets Thursdays from 10 to 10:50 a.m. beginning Jan. 9 at the Lebanon Senior Center, 80 Tangent Street. Cost is $32.

Free Phlebotomy Information Sessions

Several free Phlebotomy Program information sessions will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College for those interested in training to become a phlebotomist.

January session times and dates are Thursday, Jan. 9,10 a.m. to noon, and Wednesday, Jan. 22, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Additional sessions will be held Tuesday, Feb. 18, 1 to 3 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 26, noon to 2 p.m., and Monday, March 10, noon to 2 p.m.

All sessions will be held at the LBCC Albany campus, Calapooia Center, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW. No preregistration is required to attend. Attendance at one of the information sessions is mandatory to register for the program.

The 16-week Phlebotomy Program training starts July 28 and runs through Nov. 14, 2014 at the Lebanon Community Hospital Health Careers Training Center and the LBCC Lebanon Center.

Skill areas covered in the training include medical terminology, basic anatomy and physiology, customer service, medical law and ethics, and phlebotomy theory and technique.

AARP Driver Safety Program

AARP Driver Safety Program is being offered through Linn-Benton Community College in Albany, Corvallis and Sweet Home starting Jan. 6.

AARP’s program is designed to help develop and reinforce safe driving skills and techniques. Satisfactory completion of this class may qualify you for reduced auto insurance premiums (check with your insurance carrier).

This one-week class will meet Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 6 and 7, from 8:30 to 11:45 a.m. at the Albany Senior Center, or at the Corvallis Senior Center. Class also will meet from 1 to 3:50 p.m. at the LBCC Sweet Home Center. Cost is $15 for AARP members, $20 for non-members.

LBCC Life Stories Class



Learn how to tell your story and your family history in the “Life Stories” class offered through Linn-Benton Community College Community Education.



Recall and recount treasured family history in your own narrative style, and learn how to write descriptively with details and dialogue. Information about publishing will be provided in class.



This 10-week class will meet at the Albany Senior Center on Tuesdays from 2 to 3:50 p.m. beginning Jan. 7; at the Lebanon Center on Wednesdays from 2 to 3:50 p.m. beginning Jan.8; and at the Sweet Home Center on Thursdays from 2 to 3:50 p.m. beginning Jan.9. Cost is $58.

Polysomnographic Tech Free Information Sessions

Free information sessions for those interested in becoming a Polysomnographic Technologist, or sleep technician, will be held at Linn-Benton Community College.

January sessions will be held Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2-4 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 15, 9-11 a.m., and Thursday, Jan. 30, 1-3 p.m.

Additional sessions will be held Thursday, Feb. 13, 10 a.m.-noon, and Monday, Feb. 24, 11-1 p.m. All information sessions will be at the Albany campus in the Calapooia Center building, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany, OR. 97321.

Attendance at one of the information sessions is mandatory before applying for the program.

Polysomnographic Technologists assist physicians with patients who have sleep disorders such as sleep apnea. The program combines online and in-class instruction with a clinical practicum where students learn how to administer, score and interpret a variety of sleep disorders and their treatments.

Legacy Letter Writing Class at Benton Center

The new class Write Your Legacy Letter is being offered at Linn-Benton Community College’s Benton Center starting Monday, Jan. 6.

Legacy letters are a message that expresses a person’s values, life lessons and hopes and can be shared with family and friends at times of life transitions. Instructor Sharon Waldman, a personal historian, says legacy letters are for people who want to convey key beliefs and events of their lives but don’t have time to write an entire autobiography.

This six-week class will meet Mondays from 1 to 2:50 p.m. beginning Jan. 6 at the LBCC Benton Center, room BC-121, 757 Polk Ave., Corvallis. Cost is $40.

Free Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions Class

A free workshop “Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions Self Management Program” will be held at the Linn-Benton Community College’s Lebanon Center starting Jan. 7.

This six-week workshop is for people with ongoing health conditions such as diabetes, asthma, emphysema, heart conditions, high blood pressure, MS and other chronic health conditions.

Participants will meet Tuesdays from 12:30 to 2:50 p.m. beginning Jan. 7 at the LBCC Lebanon Center, 44 Industrial Way.

LBCC Professional Development Workshops

Business and Employer Services at Linn Benton Community College will offer two workshops in January as part of the series “Developing World Class Employees.”

“Success Skills for Training Others On-The-Job” will help you learn how to train employees effectively by understanding different learning styles, exploring the five-step model for learning something new, developing effective training plans and giving feedback.

Workshop will be held Tuesday, Jan. 7 from 8 a.m. to noon in the Fireside Room, Calapooia Center room CC-211, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

“Foundation of Communication” will help you learn effective communication skills to improve your ability to get the job done and develop high quality professional relationships.

LBCC Real Estate Pre-License Broker Exam Course

A Real Estate Pre-License Broker Exam course will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College starting Jan. 8.

Designed to prepare you for the Oregon Real Estate Brokers License Exam, this 150-hour course is the fastest way to qualify to take the state exam. The local real estate market is beginning to turn around. Now is the time to position yourself for the up-turn. 

This 11-week course will meet Wednesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. beginning Jan. 8 at the LBCC Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW.

The course content will be mostly Internet based. Students are expected to have on-line capability, to self-study and attend all class sessions. A mandatory all-day study session will be held on Saturday, March 15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

LBCC Offers Real Estate Property Manager Course

A Real Estate Property Manager course will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College beginning Jan. 6.

Designed to prepare you to manage rental property, this course combines online and in-class instruction to meet the 60-hour requirement for the Oregon Property Manager Pre-License course.

This seven-week class will meet Mondays from 6 to 8 p.m. beginning Jan. 6 through March 3 at the LBCC Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW.

A free Lunch and Learn series themed "Did You Know?" will be held at the Lebanon Senior Center, 80 Tangent Street, starting Jan. 6.

Bring your lunch and hear local experts speak on a variety of topics including: History of Hops in the Willamette Valley; Albany's Timber Carnival; Gold Panning and Treasure Hunting; Ghost Towns of Oregon; and more.

LBCC Offers QuickBooks Classes

Learn the basics of QuickBooks in classes offered through Linn-Benton Community College Small Business Development Center.

“Guided Tour QuickBooks” is a four-hour class designed for those with no previous experience using a computer-based accounting system. 

Class will meet on Jan. 9 and 16 from 2 to 3:50 p.m. in the LBCC Forum building, room F-202, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Cost for this non-credit class is $69.  

“QuickBooks I” is designed to help you set up an accounting system using QuickBooks 2013. This 10-hour class will meet on Jan. 23, 30, and Feb. 6, 13, and 20, from 2 to 3:50 p.m. in the Forum building, room F-202. Cost for this non-credit class is $195.

MicroBiz Explore and Prepare Classes

The class “MicroBiz Explore” will be held through the Small Business Development Center at Linn-Benton Community College beginning January 14.
Explore the possibilities of starting your own business. Topics include how to register your business, how to determine pricing, how to find customers and more. Learn how to refine your business plan and get started.

LBCC Computer Application Classes

Beginning computer and computer applications classes will be held at the LBCC Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers winter term.

Computers-1st Step is for those who have little or no computer experience and need hands-on, step-by-step instruction.

This four-week class meets Tuesdays from 6 to 8:20 p.m. beginning Jan. 7 at the LBCC Lebanon Center, 44 Industrial Way. Class also will be held at the LBCC Sweet Home Center, 1661 Long St., Wednesdays beginning Jan. 8 from 1 to 3:30 p.m., or Thursdays from 6 to 8:20 p.m. beginning Jan. 16. Cost is $39.

Watercolor and calligraphy art classes will be held at the LBCC Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers winter term.

"Watercolor Foundations” will be held at the Lebanon Center, 44 Industrial Way Tuesdays from 5:30 to 7:50 p.m. beginning Jan. 7.

LBCC Benton Center Holiday Pottery Sale will be held Friday, Dec. 13, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the center's ceramics studio, 757 NW Polk Ave., Corvallis.

Shop local for your holiday pottery gifts and help support the LBCC ceramics studio. Ceramics faculty, students and instructional assistants offer raku, high fire, salt fire and wood fire pieces for sale including vessels, vases, decorative items, usable tableware and small sculptures.
