Benton Center Ceramic Workshop with John Dix

The LBCC Benton Center will hold a ceramics lecture and workshop with artist John Dix on Friday, April 6 and Saturday, April 7 at the center, 757 NW Polk Ave., Corvallis. An American-trained artist, Dix has lived in Japan for 20 years, making pots for his wood-fire kilns. His work and workshops are respected around the world. Dix will share his work during a slide lecture on Friday, April 6 from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Benton Center, room BC-244. The lecture is free and open to the public. On Saturday, April 7, Dix will demonstrate his techniques in a daylong workshop that includes a no-host potluck from 10 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. at the Benton Center ceramic studio, room BC-140. LBCC Offers Real Estate Pre-License Exam Course

A Real Estate Pre-License Exam course will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College beginning April 11. Designed to prepare you for the Oregon Real Estate Brokers License Exam, this 150-hour course is the fastest way for you to qualify to take the state exam. The local real estate market is beginning to turn around. Now is the time to position yourself for the up-turn. This 11-week course will meet on Wednesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. beginning April 11 at the LBCC Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW. The course content will be mostly Internet based. Students are expected to have on-line capability, to self-study and attend all class sessions. A mandatory study session will be held on Saturday, June 23 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cost for this non-credit course is $695. 1st Annual “Celebration of A Cappella”

The 1st Annual “Celebration of A Cappella” will be held Friday, April 13 at 7:30 p.m. at Linn-Benton Community College’s Russell Tripp Performance Center, Takena Hall, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. The concert will feature a cappella performances by LBCC’s Blue Light Special and The Sirens, Rezonate, Oregon State University’s “Divine,” Portland State University’s “The Green Notes,” The No Names, and West Albany High School a cappella group. LBCC Lebanon Center Organic Gardening Class

The workshop "Organic Vegetable Garden" will be held at the LBCC Lebanon Center on Thursday, April 12. Learn the basics of organic vegetable gardening such as how to use organic soil amendments and no till methods, starts from seed, proper temperature, how much and how often to water, the best fertilizers and how to minimize pests. This one-evening workshop will meet from 5:30 to 7:20 p.m. at the Lebanon Center, 44 Industrial Way. Cost for this class is $29 plus a $2 lab fee. Classical Egyptian-Style Belly Dance Class

Learn the ancient art of Belly Dance through LBCC Albany Community Education beginning April 3. Belly Dance Classical Egyptian-Style will give you practice in this romantic, "high-glamour," yet casually powerful, style of belly dance. Routines are set to orchestrated love songs from the Golden Era of Cairo. Emphasis is on personality, fluidity and quality of the move. Baseball and the American Experience History Class

Explore the history of baseball in the class Baseball and the American Experience offered through LBCC Albany Community Education beginning April 4. Beginning in 1865, the class will look at the rise of American baseball through the eye of both amateur and professional players, from the greatest players and most dramatic moments, to the darker side of scandal, drug abuse and gambling. LBCC Offers Video Game Maker Class

Learn how to make your won video game in the class Game Maker I offered through LBCC Albany Community Education beginning April 3. Create your own arcade-style video games using iconographic object-oriented Game Maker programming. This introductory course is designed for beginners and serves as a jumping-off point into the multi-disciplinary game making industry. Laptop is required. LBCC Lebanon Center Outdoor & Environment Class

Learn about outdoor emergency survival and backpacking skills in one of the outdoor classes offered at the LBCC Lebanon Center this spring. Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers Business Technology Lab Classes

Upgrade your office skills or learn new ones in computer and business classes offered through the LBCC Business Technology Labs in the Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers. These five-week, one-credit classes allow you to progress at your own pace and include Windows and Computer Fundamentals, PowerPoint Fundamentals, Excel Fundamentals, and Filing. In addition, several 11-week, variable-credit classes will be available in Business Math, Word Processing for Business, Word Perfect and Word Processing for Business and MS Word. Linn-Benton Opera Guild Preview: Galileo Galilei

The Linn-Benton Opera Guild will preview the opera Galileo Galillei, by Philip Glass, on Tuesday, March 27 at 7:30 p.m. at 303 Benton Hall, Oregon State University campus, Corvallis. Betty Miner, Linn-Benton Opera Guild coordinator, will tell the story of the opera and play recorded excerpts from the score. Admission is free to Linn-Benton Opera Guild members, students of Linn-Benton Community College and OSU. Cost for the general public is $5. 3rd Annual Chefs’ Show-off Cooking Competition

The 3rd Annual Chefs’ Show-Off cooking competition and food fair will be held Sunday, April 1, from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Linn-Benton Community College Commons dining hall, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Cosponsored by Ten Rivers Food Web and LBCC’s Culinary Arts Department , this event showcases food and those who produce and process it from Benton, Linn and Lincoln counties. This year’s competition features all women chefs, including: Chef Michele Bursey from ONA Restaurant in Yachats, Chef Kimber Hoang from Magenta in Corvallis, Chef Regina Iovino from Iovino’s at Enoteca/ Iovino’s Cucina & Catering in Corvallis, and Chef Karen Novak from Novak’s Hungarian Restaurant in Albany. LBCC and Majestic Theater Call for Participants for Play In a Day

Linn-Benton Community College and the Majestic Theater are calling for playwrights, actors and directors to participate in a 24-hour, ten-minute, Play-in-a-Day to be performed Saturday, April 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the Majestic. Playwrights, directors and actors will write, rehearse and perform six original plays created and rehearsed within a day. This fast-paced event provides opportunities to work with and meet lots of people. LBCC Tractor and Farm Machinery Safety Class

Tractor and Farm Machinery Safety training will be held at Linn-Benton Community College’s Albany campus during the week of spring break, March 27, 28 and 29. Designed for farm workers ages 14 to 18, the course is developed and operated with the assistance of the OSU Extension Service in accordance with federal regulations. Students and parents must sign a Liability Waiver/Indemnification form within 24 hours of registration. Class will meet Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. March 27-29. Cost for this non-credit course is $76.50 plus a $20 lab fee. Preregistration is required. Students must be at least 14 to register. Additional classes will be held June 25–27, and June 28–30. Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers Offer ABE/GED Basic Skills Orientations

Free orientations to learn how you can earn your Adult Basic Education/General Education Diploma (GED) will be offered at Linn-Benton Community College's Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers. GED classes can help you improve your skills in reading, writing or math and prepare you to pass your GED test. Improving your skills can help you to be ready to fill job requirements or go to college. Free two-day orientations will be held at the centers on March 19 and 20 and again on April 2 and 3. You must attend both days of the orientation in order to register for the GED class. The Lebanon Center morning orientation will be from 9 to 11:50 a.m. The evening orientation is from 6 to 8:50 p.m. The Sweet Home Center morning orientation will be from 8:30 to 11:20 a.m. Evening orientation is held from 6 to 8:50 p.m. It is recommended that you attend the orientation based on your time preference for attending classes. Small Business Introduction Course

Thinking about starting your own business? Learn what it takes to run a successful business in the course Micro Business Explore and Commit offered through Linn-Benton Community College’s Small Business Development Center . This eleven-week course will help you determine if your business idea is viable and if it fills a potential customer need. A free orientation session will be held Wednesday, March 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Flinn Building, 222 West 1st Avenue in downtown Albany. The class will including information on how money flows in a small business, how much money you will need to launch your business, typical business risks and regulations and straightforward record keeping practices. The course also explores competition your business may face and how to best reach customers. One-on-one business advising is available. Winter Choir Concert “Singing the Songs of Innocence”

The Linn-Benton Community College choirs will perform their winter concert “Singing the Songs of Innocence” on Thursday, March 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the LBCC Russell Tripp Performance Center, Takena Hall, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. LBCC director of choral activities, James Reddan, will conduct the performances of the Concert Choir, Re-Choired Element Chamber Choir, Women’s Ensemble, Blue Light Special and the Sirens. Diana Hancock will accompany on piano. The concert will feature songs from across the choral repertoire performed by LBCC's award winning choirs. LBCC Call for Nominations for Distinguished Alumnus Award

The College Advancement office at Linn-Benton Community College is calling for nominations for its annual Distinguished Alumnus Award . Established in 2005, the award honors alumni who have demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in their profession or through service to their community and have completed at least 36 credits at LBCC.
