Ten Rivers Food Web and Linn-Benton Community College Culinary Arts will host the 2nd Annual “Chefs’ Show-off” cooking competition on Sunday, April 10 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the LBCC Commons dining hall, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Four chefs from the Ten Rivers region, which covers Linn, Benton and Lincoln counties, will compete in a timed cook-off, each using the same ingredients from local farms, ranches and food producers. Competing chefs include Michael Walliser of Saffron Salmon in Newport, Nathan McClure with OSU Catering, Jason Devrouax of Clemenza’s in Albany, and Chad Pope of Cappies Brewhouse in Albany. The Willamette Valley PhotoArts Guild and the LBCC Poetry Club are celebrating National Poetry Month in April with an exhibit at the South Santiam Hall Gallery at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. “Word & Pictures,” which features 17 pairs of photographs and poems, will be on view from April 4 to 29. The Valley Writers Series at Linn-Benton Community College will host a reading by Oregon Poet Laureate Paulann Petersen on Wednesday, April 6 in the LBCC Library Reading Room, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. A reading will take place from Noon to 12:50 p.m., and a free workshop will be held from 1 p.m. to 1:50 p.m. Petersen was named to a two-year appointment as Oregon’s sixth Poet Laureate. Born and raised in Oregon, Petersen is a widely published poet, with four collections – The Wild Awake (2002), Blood-Silk (2004), A Bride of Narrow Escape (2006) and Kindle (2008) – and several chapbooks to her credit. Petersen has received several awards, including Stanford University’s Wallace Stegner Fellowship in Poetry, two Carolyn Kizer Poetry Awards, and Literary Art’s Stewart Holbrook Award for Outstanding Contributions to Oregon’s Literary Life. The Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program will be offered through LBCC’s Benton Center this spring. This exercise program uses gentle, joint-safe exercises developed specifically for people with arthritis, musculoskeletal conditions, fibromyalgia, COPD, or anyone who are sedentary with limited or impaired joint-mobility. Exercises are designed to help relieve stiffness, strengthen muscles, improve balance and decrease arthritis pain. Low-impact exercises can be done while sitting, standing or on the floor. The course Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP), a lead-safe certification course, will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College Business and Employer Services on Friday, April 22. The one-day RRP course will cover topics such as lead dust hazards, EPA regulations, prep work, dust containment, clean-up of work site, post work inspection, record keeping, and training non-certified workers. This course meets all EPA requirements for contractors, property owners, managers and maintenance personnel who are involved in any activity that has the potential to disturb lead based paint. Classes to help you earn your Adult Basic Education/General Education Diploma (GED) will be offered at LBCC's Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers this spring. These classes can help you prepare to pass your GED test and help you to improve your skills in reading, writing or math. Improving your skills can help you be ready to fill job requirements or help you prepare for college. A free two-day orientation will be held at the LBCC Lebanon Center and the LBCC Sweet Home Center on March 14 and 15 and again on March 28 and 29. Choose to attend the morning session from 9 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. or the evening session from 6 p.m. to 8:50 p.m. at either location. Naoko Machida of Corvallis will be the featured artist in the Calapooia Center Gallery at Linn-Benton Community College from March 7 to April 15. The Corvallis resident and second-year art major will be showing a small selection of oil paintings and cut-paper work, including the piece that won the People’s Choice Award at last year’s Corvallis Fall Festival Fine Art Showcase. Machida was born in Aichi, Japan, in 1981, and came to the states in 2001 to study English and art. She moved to Oregon in 2006 and to Corvallis in 2009, where she began studying drawing, painting and art history at LBCC. “As an art student, I am still trying to develop my style and medium,” Machida says of her work. “For me, art is a way to recreate and relive my emotional experiences of the past. I often incorporate my childhood memories, such as reactions to storybooks and the sensation of exploring the world, through my artwork.
