LBCC music instructor James Reddan will conduct performances of LBCC’s award-winning Re-Choired Element Chamber Choir, Concert Choir, Men's Ensemble, Women's Ensemble, The Blue Light Special, and the Sirens. Diana Hancock will accompany on piano, with Jason Caffarella conducting the LBCC Men’s Ensemble. Re-Choired Element Chamber Choir was recently featured at the 2011 OMEA and All-Northwest Music Educators Conventions. The LBCC Benton Center Acoustic Showcase will feature the band “Acorn Bros.” on Friday, Feb. 18, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Benton Center student lounge, 757 NW Polk Ave., Corvallis. The Acorn Bros. acoustic duo features traditional and original American roots music by Ralph Penunuri and Ron Snyder. The duo plays a wide free range of straight-ahead fiddle tunes to original story songs, folk rock ballads to traditional old country music in the Louvin/Delmore/Monroe style, and spirited acoustic swing and bluegrass/newgrass jams. Various combinations of stringed instruments include guitar, mandolin, banjo, octave mandolin and mountain dulcimer. The creative work of LBCC theater instructor Dan Stone and stage manager Leslie Hammond will be on view in the LBCC South Santiam Hall Gallery, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany, through March 4. Stone is presenting a selection of original hand-molded masks and hand-sewn costumes from past productions he has directed. The masks and costumes were made by Stone and his wife, Tina Marie, and are based on his long time interest and research into Commedia dell' Arte, an important theater form that began in the 14th century and that became very popular during the 17th and 18th centuries in Italy. Though it has a long tradition, it continues to be an influential art form in contemporary theater. Portland Community College will bring its interactive theater “Illumination Project” to the LBCC Albany campus on Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 11 a.m. and again at 1 p.m. in the LBCC Forum building, room F-104, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW. The Illumination Project is interactive theater that focuses on social justice topics. This project’s topic of focus is racism. The interactive format of the play allows the audience to step in and intervene when the characters need an advocate, allowing audience member to make a change. Audience members can dynamically change the performance outcome. In this way, the Illumination Project challenges the viewpoints of both the audience and the actors in a performance. The 36th annual LBCC Children’s Play Nick Tickle, Fairytale Detective will be held Feb 20 and 26 at 3 p.m. in the Russell Tripp Performance Center in Takena Hall, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Directed by LBCC theater director Dan Stone, the play is a comedy by author Steph DeFerie about fairytale detective Nick Tickle who gets caught-up in trying to save the future of fairytales. As story props come up missing, Granny can’t tell her fairytales and calls on Nick, and some cleaver audience participation, to find the “mysterious figure” and help solve the case. Learn the art of sausage making in the one-day class Making Sausage offered through Linn-Benton Community College Albany Community Education. The art of making sausage has been around since as early as 600 BC. Learn the techniques and skills involved in making sausage at home before you invest in equipment. Class will focus on fresh and smoked sausage. Due to popular demand, this second session has been added for this one-day class. Class will meet on Sunday, Feb. 27 from noon to 5 p.m. at the LBCC Culinary Arts kitchen, second floor Calapooia Center building. Cost for the class is $29 with a $40 lab fee. A free information and orientation session for those interested in becoming a Polysomnographic Technologist, or sleep technician, will be held at Linn-Benton Community College on Thursday, March 17 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Calapooia Center building, room CC-213, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Polysomnographic Technologists assist sleep physicians to help patients with sleep disorders such as sleep apnea. Technologists ready the patient for testing, track the patient’s sleep patterns, and write and interpret the results for the physician. LBCC’s Polysomnographic Technologist program combines online and in-class instruction with a clinical practicum. Skill areas covered include the physiology of sleep with an emphasis on sleep disorders and their treatment. The program also covers how to administer, interpret and score a variety of sleep tests. Tickets are now on sale for the annual Linn-Benton Community College Winter Banquet presented by the LBCC Culinary Arts students. The banquet will be held on Friday, March 4, with two seating’s at 6:30 and 7 p.m., in the College Center Commons dining room. All dishes are prepared and served by LBCC’s culinary students. This year’s theme for the buffet-style banquet is “Take a Culinary Tour of the Iberian Peninsula,” including foods from Portugal, Spain and the Basque region. A sampling of the menu includes minted lamb meatballs, laquered pork ribs, Beira Alta roasted pork, wild boar stew, roasted chicken in sherry sauce, paella, white fish with olive and sofrito, and garlic roasted leg of lamb. The Valley Writers Series at Linn-Benton Community College will host a reading by Corvallis author and LBCC English faculty Alison Ruch on Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 10 a.m. in the LBCC Forum building, room F-104, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Ruch writes short fiction and teaches composition and creative writing classes at LBCC. In spring of 2009, she received an award as one of LBCC’s outstanding part-time faculty. Originally from Madison, Wisconsin, Ruch moved to Corvallis in 2004 and received her master’s of fine art degree in Creative Writing at Oregon State University. During the program, she wrote a novel about a comic book artist entitled Comic Toast. Currently, Ruch is working on a collection of short stories, tentatively titled Human Error. Ruch’s story “Safe” is forthcoming in The Iowa Review. She has published stories in Stringtown Magazine and with the Oregon Literary Review. A free workshop on the Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions Self Management Program will be held at the LBCC Lebanon Center starting Feb. 15. This six-week workshop is designed for people with ongoing health conditions such as diabetes, asthma, emphysema, heart conditions, high blood pressure, MS, and other conditions. Participants will meet on Tuesdays starting Feb. 15 from 1 p.m. to 3:20 p.m. at LBCC Lebanon Center at 44 Industrial Way. LBCC students Jon Calhoun and Fredrick Whitman have been named to the 2011 All-Oregon Academic Team. The Oregon Community College Association, in partnership with Phi Theta Kappa, recognizes outstanding students from each of Oregon’s 17 community colleges yearly. Nominated students will be honored at a luncheon with Governor John Kitzhaber in April, where the governor will present each student with a plaque from the OCCA. Students also receive a $1,000 scholarship from the university they plan to attend after graduation from LBCC. Whitman, an Albany resident and social science major, plans to transfer to Oregon State University to complete his bachelor’s degree. The course Renovation, Repair and Painting, a lead-safe certification course, will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College Business and Employer Services on Friday, Feb. 18. The one-day RRP course will cover topics such as lead dust hazards, EPA regulations, prep work, dust containment, clean-up of work site, post work inspection, record keeping, and training non-certified workers. This course meets all EPA requirements for contractors, property owners, managers and maintenance personnel who are involved in any activity that has the potential to disturb lead based paint.
