Linn-Benton Community College's Physical Science Department received a donation of two Vernier Software and Technology LabQuest measuring tools for use in its new physical science project room in Madrone Hall. The LabQuests were donated by second-year LBCC computer science physics student and Corvallis resident Nathan Murrow and LBCC physical science faculty member Greg Mulder, who won them through a competition on Facebook held by Vernier Software and Technology. The company awarded their 500th Facebook fan, Murrow, and the fan’s referrer, Mulder, the LabQuest Quick Start Package as part of the social media competition. The LabQuests will be part of the scientific equipment inventory kept in the project room for student use only. A public reception and gallery talk will be held for Northwest artists Carol Hausser, Cynthia Herron, and Beverly Soasey on Wednesday, Jan. 26, from 2 to 3 p.m. in the North Santiam Hall Gallery second floor atrium, Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Hausser has been teaching art at Chemeketa for the past 30 years under her married name, Carol Bibler. She works in watercolor to create colorful, complex geometric abstract paintings, some as large as four feet by five feet. Hausser’s work is in the art collections of the State of Oregon, Hallie Ford Museum of Art and the Microsoft Corp., and has been widely exhibited in the Northwest over the years. Herron’s colorful acrylic paintings express the mood and atmosphere of the Willamette Valley landscape, tracing a fine line between representation and complete abstraction. The Linn-Benton Community College equestrian team is hosting the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association Hunt Seat and Western Show on Jan. 29 and 30 at the Linn County Fairgrounds in Albany. Ten schools will be participating with approximately 150 riders competing. Participating riders hail from LBCC, the University British Columbia, University of Victoria, Seattle University, Western Washington University, Central Washington University, Washington State University, University of Washington, Oregon State University and University of Oregon. Competition will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, with two hunt seat shows and two western shows. This event is free and open to the public and is a fundraiser for the LBCC Equestrian team. The LBCC Benton Center Acoustic Showcase will feature the band “Marquette Gumbo” on Friday, Jan. 21, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Benton Center student lounge, 757 NW Polk Ave., Corvallis. Southern-rooted Marquette Gumbo, known for their lively Corvallis Farmers Market riffs, will fill the Benton Center with their style of musical genius. Sid Beam and Joe Casprowiak, musical brothers for over 40 years, comprise the base for Marquette Gumbo. Often joined by other local artists, Joe and Sid make music that synthesizes the roots of music heard in the American South in the first half of the 20th century. Marquette Gumbo's original music draws from the heart and soul of that musical time and place, reflecting the excellent songwriting of that era in new ways. . A 10-session program to help parents enhance their parenting skills will be offered through LBCC Parenting Education starting Tuesday, Jan. 11. The class Incredible Years is open to all Corvallis School District families with children ages 6-12. This fun and engaging class will help parents strengthen their relationship with their children. The Incredible Years teaches techniques to use now to help prevent problems in the teen years. Through video clips, discussion and home activities, parents will learn how to promote positive behavior, set clear limits and use effective discipline. A free Veterinary Assistant Program orientation will be held at Linn-Benton Community College for those interested in training to become a Veterinary Assistant. For information on the mandatory orientation, call 541-917-4927. Attendance at the orientation is mandatory in order to take the program. The 16-week LBCC Veterinary Assistant Program starts Feb. 14, 2011 and runs through June 3, 2011. Skill areas covered in the training include an introduction to hospital management, business procedures and job preparation skills. The program will also cover basic education and experience in commonly used medical and surgical techniques as well as an understanding of common disease states. Cost for the program is $3,650. Learn how to cook healthy vegetarian cuisine in two classes, American Vegetarian I and II, offered through Linn-Benton Community College Albany Community Education winter term. In the class American Vegetarian I, learn how to make several fun, easy and elegant appetizers such as Sherry mushroom pate and trademark tapenade. Create kohirabi slaw and black bean corn-y-castus salad using fresh, local ingredients, and sample several varieties of vegetarian soups. The second class, American Vegetarian II, will focus on main dishes such as heart-healthy tofu chili, tempeh with roasted veggies, and Southwest Seitan enchiladas as well as desserts such as velvet vegan chocolate cake, famous fruit pie, and savory hazelnut tart. This four-week class covers a wide range of topics including goal setting, how to identify skills, how to evaluate job opportunities, how to construct an effective resume, interviewing skills, and how to select educational and training opportunities. A public reception and gallery talk for Eugene photographer Susie Morrill will be held on Thursday, Jan. 13, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the South Santiam Hall Gallery at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. “Portraits in Place,” a collection of farmers, families and colorful individuals by Morrill, will be on exhibit at the gallery through Jan. 28. The exhibit features 20 of Morrill’s black-and-white prints of “ordinary Oregonians” who work and live in the southern Willamette Valley. Morrill’s approach to portraiture is direct and engaging, showing us fathers and sons, homeless families, ranchers with their dogs, and other characters she has met in her nearly three decades in photography. The 34th annual Family Fun Day at Linn-Benton Community College will be held on Saturday, Jan. 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the LBCC Activities Center gym, Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd., Albany. Children ages one to six will enjoy activities such as play dough, an obstacle course, seed planting, crafts, bounce house, face painting, pirate maze and much more. LBCC announced that the college is upgrading its student e-mail system to Google Apps for Education. The new system, powered by Google, is free to the college and students. The system will provide features including vastly expanded data storage and access to popular communication tools in Google Apps for Education. Students will continue to use their existing @ml.linnbenton.edu e-mail addresses through winter term. During winter term students will be directed to a tool to help them migrate their old e-mail to their new account. Students can login using any of the current e-mail links on the college website, including the Quick Links drop-down menu at the top of the homepage and e-mail link on Roadrunner Central at www.linnbenton.edu/go/roadrunner-central. Three Northwest artists whose work ranges from painting to sculpture will take center-stage at the first Linn-Benton Community College Art Invitational from Jan. 3 through Feb. 25, in the North Santiam Hall Gallery, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Salem artists Carol Hausser and Cynthia Herron, two painters whose abstract styles offer an engaging contrast, share the walls with Eugene artist Beverly Soasey, who works in mixed-media sculpture and assemblages.
