ROV Team Video from Paulina Lake

In the summer of 2009, nearly 50 young adults ages 14-21 from across rural Oregon had the opportunity to participate as members of an exploration and discovery research team.

LBCC Physical Sciences department partnered with the Oregon Workforce Alliance (OWA) to establish and deploy the Oregon Underwater and Volcanic Exploration Team. See the video below from OWA.

The team consisted of six youth per week for five weeks, along with a group of undergraduate students and two-year college instructors. They spent part of July and August 2009 engineering and building an Underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). The ROV did deep water diving and exploration of a currently not-understood volcanic feature 70 meters under the surface of Paulina Lake, while the groups on shore operated and maintained the vehicle and analyzed data, videos and samples and documented the research excursion.

The project served to expose young people to the world of science, engineering and math in a way that is hands-on and intriguing and introduce them to the idea of pursuing a technical field for a career. LBCC provided a wide variety of resources for the project including physical science instructor Greg Mulder. Mulder and his team of undergraduates spent nearly six weeks at Paulina, and hope to do so again this year.

Other partners in the project included Clatsop Community College, Central Oregon Community College, Community Services Consortium, Linn Benton Lincoln Workforce Investment Board, and The Job Council.
