40th Annual Children's Play "Follow Coyote"

The Children’s Theater at Linn-Benton Community College presents its 40th annual play “Follow Coyote” Feb. 6, 7 and 14 at LBCC’s Russell Tripp Performance Center, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Set in 1842 on the Oregon Trail, Follow Coyote follows the story of eleven-year-old William Armstrong, who dreams of being a hero but who’s rash behavior results in he and his bossy sister, Sarah, becoming separated from the wagon train. With the help of the trickster, Coyote, William and Sarah struggle to rejoin their family. When matters go from bad to worse, William has to save the day. Follow Coyote is a coming-of-age story written the by Dari Lawrie and directed by LBCC theater instructor Tinamarie Ivey. LBCC Offers Forklift Safety Training

Forklift Safety Training will be offered through Business and Employer Services at Linn-Benton Community College on Saturday, March 7, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the LBCC Albany Campus, IC-103, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. This eight-hour Forklift Safety training fulfills OR-OSHA Guidelines for Safe Operating Practice. 
This course will provide four hours of classroom training and four hours of practice on the forklift. Training includes forklift safety, handling and moving loads, principles of lifting, stacking and un-stacking loads and driving with a load. Upon completion of eight hours of training and meeting the requirements, student will receive an award of completion to take to their current or future employer. Lebanon Community Education Classes in Lebanon

Several late starting classes are being offered through Linn-Benton Community College Lebanon Community Education this term. The one-day workshop “The Art of the Feline Face” introduces the basics of creating an exciting watercolor representation of a feline friend. The unique techniques discussed are freeing, fun, and useful in painting many other subjects. Workshop is for both beginners and more advanced painters. All materials provided. LBCC Re-establishes Women’s Basketball Program

Linn-Benton Community College announced plans to re-establish its women’s basketball program starting this fall, with an emphasis on the “student” in student athlete. The search for a coach will begin in the next few weeks. Player recruitment will begin shortly after the hire, with team play starting in the 2015-16 intercollegiate basketball season. The recommendation to reinstate the program was presented to LBCC President Greg Hamann by the college Athletics Advisory Board, led by LBCC Athletic Director Randy Falk and Associate Dean of Student Engagement Leslie Hammond, with representation from community members, high school sports and LBCC alumni. Linn-Benton Opera Guild Preview: Carmen

The Linn-Benton Opera Guild will preview the opera Carmen, by Bizet Tuesday, Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m. at 303 Benton Hall, Oregon State University campus, Corvallis. OSU music professor Angela Carlson will tell the story of the opera and play recorded excerpts from the score. Admission is free to Linn-Benton Opera Guild members, students of Linn-Benton Community College and OSU. Cost for the general public is $5. Performance dates will be Feb. 6, 10, 12 and 14 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 8 at 2 p.m. at the Keller Auditorium, 222 SW Clay, Portland. Opera will be sung in English with projections above the stage. LBCC College Transfer Day

A free College Transfer Day Information Fair for students interested in transferring from LBCC to a four-year college will be held at Linn-Benton Community College Wednesday, Jan. 28 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Takena Hall, 6500 Pacific Blvd S.W., Albany. LBCC Foundation Names New Development Officer

Andrew Wynings Andrew Wynings has joined the Linn-Benton Community College Foundation office as development officer. Wynings, of Independence, has 15 years of professional development and fundraising experience with Western Oregon University, Family Building Blocks in Salem, and the Willamette Cancer Foundation in McMinnville.  In his new position, Wynings will be responsible for expanding relationships with existing donors and establishing new relationships with alumni and friends for the college Foundation. Established in 1972, the LBCC Foundation serves as a conduit to the college for giving to programs, student scholarships, and special projects. The Foundation has invested undesignated funds for equipment to the Advanced Transportation Technology Center, supported student educational experiences and scholarships, provided high tech resources for students, and most recently was the major contributor to the political action committee supporting the LBCC Bond.

Pesticides Applicator Class

Pesticide applicator class will be held through the Small Business Development Center at Linn-Benton Community College. Designed to prepare senior agriculture workers to take the State of Oregon Department of Agriculture pesticide applicator exam, classes provide in-depth training, including extra coaching in math and calibration skills. Pesticides Laws and Safety, Public and Commercial applications, will be held Jan. 22 and 23 from 8 a.m. to noon at LBCC’s Calapooia Center, room CC-213, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW. Cost is $99. NSH Gallery Features Winter Invitational: Bets Cole, Judy Ness and Laura Mack

The Winter Invitational exhibit by three guest artists, Bets Cole, Judy Ness and Laura Mack will be shown through Feb. 27 in the North Santiam Hall Gallery of Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW, Albany. A reception and gallery talk will be held Wednesday, Jan. 21, from 12 p.m. - 1 p.m. in NSH second floor atrium.     The Winter Invitational features tapestries by Judy Ness, landscape paintings by Bets Cole, and collage images and paintings by Laura Mack. The show is rich in its diversity of media and style. Each artist’s work reflects a journey of a place or time. Judy Ness, a fiber artist from Eugene, reflects about her journey as she weaves light and color into each tapestry. Usually working freeform, she creates tapestries using the Norwegian Krokbragd and Diné (Navajo)/Southwestern techniques. LBCC SSH Gallery Features Christian Barrios: Viviendo Muerto!

The show “Viviendo Muerto!” featuring the work of marquetry artist Christian Barrios will be shown through Jan. 30 in the South Santiam Hall Gallery of Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW, Albany. A reception and gallery talk will be held Wednesday, January 28, from 12 p.m. - 1 p.m. in SSH Gallery.     Born in Mexico City, Barrios learned ceramic painting at a very young age. After moving to the US, he learned the art of marquetry and now creates beautiful images from exotic woods on panel. “Every time I start working on a new piece of art, I experiment with the exotic wood to form my work,” said Barrio. “Each becomes a new challenge for me and it motivates and inspires me to create.” Along with several large-scale, inlayed wood pieces, the show includes some of Barrios’ photography. LBCC Nominations Open for Distinguished Alumnus Award

Nominations are now being accepted for candidates for Linn-Benton Community College’s Distinguished Alumnus Award. The award is open to former LBCC students who have demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in their profession or through service to their community, and who have completed at least 36 credits at LBCC. Deadline for submission is Friday, Feb. 27. Nomination forms are available online at www.linnbenton.edu/distinguished-alumni . Nominees will be honored at a reception held April 22 at the college. LBCC Just for Fun Piano Class

Learn to play piano in three hours in the class Just for Fun Piano, taught by nationally known pianist Donn Rochlin. This one-day class will teach you all the chords and tools you need to play your favorite songs and to improvise without years of practice. This class is for the total beginner as well as classical pianist who would like to play with more artistic freedom. LBCC Offers QuickBooks Classes

Learn the basics of QuickBooks in classes offered through Linn-Benton Community College Small Business Development Center. Guided Tour QuickBooks is a four-hour class designed for those with no previous experience using a computer-based accounting system.  Class will meet on Jan. 20 and 22, from 2 to 3:50 p.m. in the LBCC Forum building, room F-202, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Cost for this non-credit class is $69.   QuickBooks I class is designed to help you set up an accounting system using QuickBooks 2013. LBCC Oregon Construction Contractors Board Education

Oregon Construction Contractors Board Education (CCB) will be offered through the Small Business Development Center at Linn-Benton Community College. This five session course will meet Tuesday evenings Jan. 20 to Feb. 17, from 6 to 10 p.m., on the LBCC Albany campus, Calapooia Center room CC-213. The course is required for CCB licensing as part of the education requirement before taking the State of Oregon CCB exam. Participants are required to attend all five of the state-approved sessions to satisfy the educational requirement for Oregon contractor licensing. Topics include employer requirements and employee rights, Oregon lien and contract law, taxes/recordkeeping, best business practices, project and time management, estimating and scheduling, building codes, OR-OSHA requirements, job site safety, environmental laws, and test taking strategies in compliance with ORS 701-280.  Advance registration is required by Jan. 16. LBCC Student Finds Memoir-Writing Class Life-Enhancing

Maryke Desjardins Marÿke Desjardins was eight years old when American troops from Camp Adair, Oregon liberated her small South Holland town from five years of German occupation at the end of World War II. “The Timberwolves liberated us October 30, 1944, and we were so happy! I handed out apples to the soldiers as they marched through our town. For so many years after I moved to America, I looked for a soldier who was there that day,” said Desjardins. Desjardins moved from Holland to New Zealand, then to Arizona, Minnesota, Montana and finally Oregon. “When I moved to Albany, a young man in one of my Bible classes said, ‘My dad was in the Timberwolves and he was in the Netherlands.’ I said, ‘Oh, I have to meet him, if he’s still alive.’ And he is; he still is today. The family took me to lunch and we talked. I brought them some tulips and Dutch chocolates. He showed me papers from the 104th Infantry Division, and there was my hometown that they had marched through. It was very excit...

LBCC Polysomnographic Technology Free Information Sessions

Free information sessions for those interested in becoming a Polysomnographic Technologist, or sleep technician, will be held at Linn-Benton Community College. January sessions will be held on Thursday, Jan. 15, 9-11 a.m., and Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1-3 p.m.  Additional sessions will be held on Monday, Feb. 9, 10 a.m.-noon, Wednesday, February 11, 11-1 p.m., and Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1-3 p.m. All information sessions will be at the Albany campus in the Calapooia Center, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany, OR. 97321. Attendance at one of the information sessions is mandatory before applying for the program. Polysomnographic Technologists assist physicians with patients who have sleep disorders such as sleep apnea. The program combines online and in-class instruction with a clinical practicum where students learn how to administer, score and interpret a variety of sleep disorders and their treatments. LBCC Free Phlebotomy Information Sessions

Several free Phlebotomy Program information sessions will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College for those interested in training to become a phlebotomist. Sessions will be held Monday, January 12, from 10 to noon; Thursday, January 29, from 11 to 1 p.m.; and Wednesday, February 18, from 1 to 3 p.m. All sessions will be held at the LBCC Albany campus, Calapooia Center, CC 210, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW. No pre-registration is required to attend. Attendance at one of the information sessions is mandatory to register for the program. The 16-week Phlebotomy Program training starts July 27 and runs through Nov. 13, 2015 at the Lebanon Community Hospital Health Careers Training Center and the LBCC Lebanon Center. Skill areas covered in the training include medical terminology, basic anatomy and physiology, customer service, medical law and ethics, and phlebotomy theory and technique.  Cost for the program is $5,500.
