Insider Staff News - Feb. 10, 2016

The Public Safety Office will hold an active shooter exercise with the Albany Police Department Tuesday, June 14. This full-scale training exercise will involve local law enforcement, fire department, paramedics and LBCC’s Incident Command team to provide practice of a coordinated emergency response at the college. The exercise will be limited to a few key buildings on campus to minimize impact to normal operations.

This type of training not only gives local responders valuable practice, it also gives the college Incident Command team an opportunity to interact with other emergency responders and to test the college’s response and communications during and after an incident - valuable training that can be used in any emergency or natural disaster situation.

Volunteers are needed: To help create a more complete training exercise, volunteers are needed in the roles of victim, witness or building personnel. If you would like to help, contact Marcene Olson, Public Safety Office, olsonm@linnbenton.edu.

What is LBCC Incident Command?

LBCC Incident Command consists of several key administration and staff members who provide logistics and support to the campus in emergency situations. Members are assigned to teams, which include planning, command, logistics, operations and finance. Incident Command meets quarterly to practice individual roles and teamwork using training scenarios.

IC teams:

Planning gathers information on resources, emergency responders and personnel arriving on campus, and directs them to staging areas as needed. They log the information and pass it on to the Command team.

Command is in charge of communications to the campus, community and the media through ReGroup emergency notification, Flash News Alert System, social media and the college web site. This team includes the Public Information Officer, who serves as spokesperson to the media. The goal is to keep people as informed as possible while providing accurate and updated information.

Logistics works with Planning and Command to determine what our resources are and where they need to go - such as food, water, equipment and people. They also provide communication support, making sure phones, website and electronic communications remain operable.

Operations works with Logistics to deploy assets and coordinate people. They determine tactics to help mitigate chaos and keep the situation as coordinated as possible.

Finance acts as the purchasing agent to help procure needed supplies and personnel. They also keep record of purchases and expenses related to the emergency, which also will be used to report to FEMA.
