A variety of classes, beginning the week of January 5, will be held this winter at Linn-Benton Community College Benton Center, 757 Polk Ave., Corvallis.

ALTERED BOOKS & ART JOURNALING
Stretch your imagination to transform a hand-made journal or discarded book into a work of art and an object of self-expression. Learn a wide variety of techniques to create beautiful, layered journal pages using mixed media. We will manipulate photographs, carve rubber stamps, integrate paint, ink, paper, gel medium, fabric, stencils, pens, markers, charcoal, and more. It's time to get creative and explore the unusual! Class meets Wednesdays starting January 7 from 6-7:50 pm at the LBCC Benton Center. Cost is $79.No experience necessary. Supply list at first class.           
                        
EXPRESSIVE WATERMEDIA                                                                                                             
Focusing mainly on two perennial favorites:  watercolor and acrylic, we will explore these brilliant and sensitive media.  Demos will be done in all water media including gouache and casein showing their strengths and ranges of visual effects.  Hands-on exploration of color theory and design will be emphasized using still life, animal, landscape, and abstract subjects.  Learning control of a medium - water, paper, pigment and brushes - will free you to express your feelings in color.  Intended for beginners and intermediate painters.  Starting January 8, class will meet Thursday from 9-11:50 am at the LBCC Benton Center. Cost is $109. Drawing experience is useful but not a prerequisite.  Bring a pencil and plain bond paper.  Supply list at first class.                                              

COLORED PENCIL: STUDIO WORKSHOP                                                                                          
For those working in colored pencil to improve their skills in a studio environment. Work on projects of your choice. Emphasis is on helping students gain artistic confidence through critiques, refining techniques, and maturing as an artist. Class will begin on January 8 and meet Wednesday from 9-11:50 am at the LBCC Benton Center. An all-day field trip is included. Cost is $89. REALISTIC DRAWING                                                                                                   
Designed for anyone, especially people who feel they cannot draw well, who may feel they have no "talent" for drawing and may have little hope of learning how to draw.  Take this class and be surprised!  A useful class for any artist who wants to strengthen drawing and design skills. Beginning Tuesday, January 6 and meeting from 6-8:50 pm at the LBCC Benton Center. Cost is $109. Bring pencils and plain 8 x 11 white paper to first class.  Supply list at first class.                                            

DRAWING, BEGINNING                                                                                                    
Using black and white media, explore shape, line and values to learn to draw an accurate image. Focuses on drawing skills for the beginner as well as the experienced artist and is an excellent foundation class for painters of all levels. Class meets Tuesdays starting January 6 from 9-10:50 am at the LBCC Benton Center. Cost is $95. Supply list at first class.           

BEGINNING PAINTING                                                                               
An inspirational and practical study of the fundamentals of painting using watercolor or acrylic or oil. Focuses on individual problem areas.  Explores special techniques for seeing colors and mixing them accurately.  For beginners and more advanced painters who want to hone their color-seeing and mixing skills.  Beginning Thursday, January 8 and meeting from 6-8:50 pm at the LBCC Benton Center. EXPLORING ART STYLES                                                                                     
A hands-on exploration of art history.  Using watercolors, acrylics or oils, analyze and incorporate styles, and colors of popular 19th, 20th century and contemporary artists into new and modern subjects. Benefit from studying historical styles and art movements.  This is one of the best ways to expand your stylistic range! Lots of painting time with in-progress critiques, individual assistance, and optional exercises.  Demos in various media.  Beginners welcome! Starting January 9, class will meet Fridays from 9-11:50 am at the LBCC Benton Center. Cost is $109. FIGURE DRAWING & PAINTING                                                                                                  
A painting and drawing class using live models that teaches the use of light and shade and color in rendering the figure in traditional realism, impressionism, cubism and expressionism.  Some experience in drawing recommended.  Students learn gesture drawing, become more accomplished in seeing, drawing and painting; develop a personal artistic identity and style, and knowledge of art history in relation to figure drawing and painting. Class meets Fridays starting January 9 from 1-3:50 pm at the LBCC Benton Center. Cost is $127. Bring a pencil and plain bond paper.  Supply list at first class.

CLAY EXPLORATION                                                                                                   
An opportunity for students of all skill levels to learn a variety of porcelain and stoneware techniques and to participate in a number of Raku firings. 10-week class offerings begin Tuesday, January 6 from 6:30-9:20pm or Wednesday, January 7 from 6-8:50pm at the LBCC Benton Center. Cost is $129.                                                    

ADAPTIVE HANDBUILDING                                                                                      
For individuals with developmental disabilities. Overview of handbuilding techniques with clay. Emphasis on problem solving; how to take a piece from conception to completion.  Start January 6, class will meet Tuesdays from 4:15-5:15pm 50pm at the LBCC Benton Center. Cost is $59.       

TECHNIQUES FOR HANDBUILDING SUCCESS 
Overview of handbuilding techniques with clay.  Emphasis on problem solving; how to take a piece from conception to completion.  Also explores creative process for those looking for new ideas for their clay work. 
Class begins January 9 and meets Fridays from 9-11:50am 50pm at the LBCC Benton Center. Cost is $129. Students purchase own clay.

PERSONAL COMPUTER ESSENTIALS       
A perfect class for those who have never touched a computer before and want hands-on, step-by-step instruction. Designed to go at an easy pace. Includes identifying the various parts of the computer, how to turn it on and off and use the mouse and keyboard. Also introduces working with Windows 7, and a brief intro to email and the Internet. Starting January 7, class will meet every Wednesday from 4:30-6:20pm for six weeks at the LBCC Benton Center. Cost is $79.
WINDOWS 8                                                                                                     
Are you using Windows 8 and finding yourself lost? You are not alone. This class will help you understand and navigate this new operating system. Practice using Windows 8's Apps and Shortcuts and Metro Style Interface.
This four-week class begins on January 6 and meets Tuesdays from 9-10:50am at the LBCC Benton Center. Cost is $59. If you have a portable Windows 8 device, bring it to class with you.                               

ANDROID PHONES & TABLETS
Android has become the world's most widely used mobile platform. Bring your fully charged Android phone or tablet to class to learn about the device's core functions and settings. Find fun apps using the Google Play store, sync your device with your Google account, and explore how to connect your home computer to upload and share pictures and videos. This four-week class begins on January 7 and meets Wednesdays from 9-10:50am at the LBCC Benton Center. Cost is $59.

APPLE IPHONE
Get to know your iPhone's basic functions and useful features. Explore the touchscreen interface, type with the intelligent keyboard, setup your email account, and confidently manage your preferences in the Settings menu. Take advantage of standard iPhone Apps (Camera, Maps, Notes, and Music) and download new apps from the App Store. Suitable for iPhone beginners, using any generation of iPhone device. This four-week class begins on January 8 and meets Thursdays from 9-10:50am at the LBCC Benton Center. Cost is $59.

APPLE IPAD                                                                                        
Go beyond the iPad's basic features to meet your needs for work or home. Confidently search for and download Apps, and enjoy Internet surfing, emailing, editing and sharing photos, as well as exploring iTunes' special role on the iPad. For new and current users. MAC ESSENTIALS                   
For new Mac users who want to understand the Mac OS X operating system basic applications, and for current users who wish to further develop their skills. Covered applications include iTunes, iPhoto, iCal, Text Edit, Preview, Safari, Mail and others. Detailed handouts supplement media presentations. Each session includes time for questions. Beginning January 7, class meets on Mondays from 6:30-8:20pm at the LBCC Benton Center. Cost is $85. Laptops are welcome.                                                 

YOUR DIGITAL SLR CAMERA                                                                                      
Find out ways to use your brand new or older digital SLR camera more effectively and creatively. Maximize your camera's features beyond full auto to get the effects you desire. Practice using the f-stop for depth of field, stopping the action of fast moving events and make it look like a pro took every picture. Includes a photo shoot to apply what you have learned and work with Adobe Photoshop Elements for simple photo editing and enhancement. Starting January 7 and meeting on Wednesdays from 6:30-8:20pm at the LBCC Benton Center. Cost is $89. Bring your Digital SLR camera and manual, fully charged battery, transfer cable and media card to class.                                                        

PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS II                                                                                    
Beyond the basics! You have learned the basics like cropping and adjusting the brightness in your photos, now build on those basics and learn more advanced techniques in Adobe Photoshop Elements. Learn how to process a batch of photos all at once, touch up a portrait, restore an old photo, add special effects, create a stunning panorama from several photos, and make a slide show to share with others. Class will meet on Tuesdays starting January 6 from 6:30-8:20pm at the LBCC Benton Center. Cost is $89.

CAKE & CUPCAKE DECORATION
Use simple techniques to accomplish professional looking results.  Learn how to use butter cream and royal icing while focusing on a variety of ways to decorate cakes and cupcakes. Make beautiful holiday cakes to wow your family and friends! Starting January 7, class will meet on Wednesdays from 2-3:20pm at the LBCC Benton Center. Cost is $72. BELLY DANCE, BEGINNING I & II                                                                                       
Belly dance as an exercise is an enjoyable way to tone the body and develop balance, suppleness, and flexibility. As an art form, it encourages expressiveness and grace for everyone. Join this class, meeting on Tuesdays from 7:30-8:50pm beginning on January 6 at the LBCC Benton Center. Cost is $69.                                                                

THE ART OF HULA                     
An introduction to the art of Hula, a gentle form of dance and expression. This is a fun, beginner class focusing on the steps, hand motions and dances while providing a relaxing and fun form of exercise and hula tradition. Hawaiian history and culture will enhance your Au'ana (pronounced ah-wan-ah), or modern hula experience. 
Class starts on January 8 from 2-2:50pm on Fridays at the LBCC Benton Center. Cost is $49.                                                                                       

LINE DANCE                                                                                                                     
Line dancing isn't just Country Western anymore! Learn to dance to a variety of music including Country Western, 50's and Latin. No partner needed. Dancers must wear shoes with a smooth sole. Class will meet on Fridays beginning January 9 from 7-7:50pm at the LBCC Benton Center. Cost is $49.

COWBOY SWING FOR COUPLES                                                                             
Jump into country swing dance with your chosen partner! Gain knowledge of past and modern techniques and styles while learning the fundamentals of country swing.  Learn exciting swing moves such as flips, spins, and intricate combinations that will amaze your friends.  Bond with your partner, have fun, and stay in shape in this exercise intensive dance class. Starting January 9, class will meet on Friday from 8-8:50pm at the LBCC Benton Center. Cost is $49.                                                

BEGINNERS COWBOY DANCE FOR COUPLES                                                                         
Country dance is FUN, even if you don't love Country Western music. Course covers Cowboy 2-step, Swing, Waltz, and ChaCha. This is not line dancing. Cowboy Dance for Couples works great in ballroom and swing dancing. You are encouraged to enroll with a partner. Wear soft-soled shoes. Class will start on January 8 and meet on Thursdays from 7:30-8:50pm at the LBCC Benton Center. Cost is $69.                                                       

ADAPTIVE MOVEMENT FITNESS                                                                                             
For individuals with developmental disabilities. Join in getting your heart rate up, with aerobics, light weight training and movement to music.

GENTLE EXERCISE                                                                                           
 Gentle, joint-safe exercises developed specifically for people with arthritis or musculoskeletal conditions, fibromyalgia, COPD, and anyone who is sedentary with limited or impaired joint-mobility. This program will help relieve stiffness, strengthen muscles, improve balance and decrease arthritis pain. Low-impact exercises can be done while sitting, standing or on the floor.
Class will start on January 6 and meet on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 3-3:50pm at the LBCC Benton Center, 757 NW Polk Ave., Corvallis. Cost is $50.

BODY CONDITIONING

BETTER BONES & BALANCE                                                                                   
Reap the benefits OSU Bone Research Lab studies have shown. This exercise program will significantly slow the rate of bone loss in adults of all ages. Improve your balance, flexibility and coordination, and see an increase in muscle tone and overall body fitness.                                                
There are several classes to join in on. AEROBICS/TONING FOR SENIORS

MODIFIED EXERCISE WITH CHAIRS                                                                                            
Modified exercise for older adults: chair exercises, walking, limited dance movement and stretching. Open to all seniors. Class will start on January 6 and meet on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 9-9:50am at Meadow Park, 277 NW Conifer, Corvallis. Cost is $65.                                                       

KI-AIKIDO, BEGINNING                                                                                      
Teaching students to lead their opponents, moving together without colliding or fighting, the principles and practice of Ki-Aikido apply directly to dealing productively with people in daily life. Taught in a traditional dojo setting, this non-competitive martial art emphasizes safety and healthy exercise. Class will start on January 8 and meet on Thursdays from 7-8:50pm at Oregon Ki Society, 535 NW 4th Street, Corvallis. Cost is $40.                                                       

TAI CHI CHUAN                      
A form of movement, meditation and martial art that originated in China. It teaches mind/body harmony and how to cultivate our internal energy, chi. It accomplishes relaxation, provides relief from stress, promotes general health and at higher levels of achievement, is a very effective martial art. Co-taught by Scott Leibowitz and Diane Leban. Class will start on January 10 and meet on Saturdays from 10-11:50am at the LBCC Benton Center. Corvallis. TAI CHI FOR HEALTH I       
This Sun style Tai Chi program is safe and beneficial for those with chronic conditions or limited mobility and can reduce pain, stiffness and fatigue.  Discover improved physical function, muscle strength, flexibility/mobility, and balance. YIN YOGA                                                                                     
Focus on relieving tension and letting go in this ancient Taoist form of Yoga. Yin Yoga is a quiet practice that targets the body's core, including bones and connective tissue essential for injury prevention and joint health. Postures are held for longer periods of time, gently stretching and lengthening muscles to increase elasticity. All levels welcome.

 GENTLE YOGA                                                                                                    
This slower paced yoga class covers the basics: aligning posture, improving flexibility, building strength, developing breath, relaxation and a calm, focused mind. Students will learn beginning level poses and ways to adapt them to meet physical limitations. Class will start on January 9 and meet Fridays from 12-1:20pm at the LBCC Benton Center. Cost is $59. Wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat and 2 firm blankets to class.                                                  

HATHA YOGA                                                                                                                  
Increase strength and flexibility while learning tools to calm your mind and soothe your spirit. Learn yoga poses that develop balance, proper breathing, and relaxation techniques. Have fun and relax while also getting a good workout and reducing stress. All Levels welcome. Class will start on January 5 and meet Mondays & Wednesdays from 12-12:50pm at the LBCC Benton Center. Cost is $75. Please bring a yoga mat and one firm blanket.

FLOW YOGA                                                                                                                       
Vinyasa Flow Yoga is based on flowing, dynamic sequence of movements which are synchronized with the breath and also includes static postures, balances and stretches. Increase strength, flexibility and endurance while proving circulation, balance and alignment/posture. Relax your mind, body and soul. All levels welcome. Class will start on January 5 and meet Mondays & Wednesdays from 1-1:50pm at the LBCC Benton Center. Cost is $75. Please bring yoga mat and one firm blanket.                                          

BALLET CORE                                                                                     
A combination of ballet, pilates, and yoga which develops strength, flexibility, and balance equally. Using precision, flow and a full range of motion builds the strength of an athlete with the long, lean, and graceful lines of a dancer. Ballet Core involves simple ballet exercises at the barre and in the center, pilates core strengthening exercises, and yoga postures for stress release and relaxation. No previous experience required. There will be a class offering that will start on January 8 and meet Thursdays from 6-7:20pm at the LBCC Benton Center. Cost is $65. Starting January 10 there will be a Saturday Ballet Core class meeting at the Benton Center from 8:30-9:50am.                                                                             

MANDARIN CHINESE                                                                                                               
An introductory conversational Chinese course designed for those with little or no prior knowledge of Mandarin Chinese. Course will concentrate on pronunciation, basic conversation and situational dialogue. Chinese culture will also be discussed. Class will start on January 6 and meet Tuesdays from 7-8:50pm at the LBCC Benton Center. FRENCH, BEGINNING III                                                                                                  
Emphasizes everyday conversation and grammar for students with a novice to moderate knowledge of French.

GERMAN, BEGINNING II                                                                                                  
Learn German language skills useful for visiting Germany, including some knowledge of culture and history.  This is a basic course for those who have had some or even little exposure to the German Language and feel comfortable in beginning to use past tense forms of verbs. Primary emphasis will be on listening, speaking, and learning vocabulary useful for engaging in simple conversations. Textbook available at the Benton Center Bookstore.

GERMAN, HIGH INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED                                                                                      
Explore current affairs or cultural topics through magazine articles, video clips, short stories, songs, a radio play or a short novel. Class is conducted in German and intended for students who would like to brush up, practice and improve their listening, speaking and reading skills. Can be taken repeatedly. Class will start on January 7 and meet Wednesdays from 7-8:50pm at the LBCC Benton Center. ITALIAN, BEGINNING                                                                                                        
Listen, speak, read, write and maybe even think in Italian. This class allows the beginner to progress from the simpler language of classroom directions to the vocabulary and grammar that make possible communication about common subjects. Class will start on January 6 and meet Tuesdays from 7-8:50pm at Corvallis High School, 1400 NW Buchanan Ave, Corvallis. Cost is $95.                                                                                                                        

CONVERSATIONAL ITALIAN                                                                                                     
Speak Italian using what you've learned. Practice using common vocabulary and present tense verbs, asking and answering every day and travel questions. Italian, Beginning  A or basic understanding of Italian language required.

CONVERSATIONAL ITALIAN II                                                                                        
Listen, speak, read, write and maybe even think in Italian.  Improve conversational skills, vocabulary and grammar.  For students who have completed one or two terms of Italian. Class will start on January 5 and meet Mondays from 7-8:50pm at the LBCC Benton Center. Cost is $79.                                           

RUSSIAN, BEGINNING A

INTER SPANISH CONVERSATION & CULTURE                                                                                          
Spanish conversation and culture with some grammar for review and clarification. Practice in reading and writing also covered. For students with one-two years of Spanish or equivalent. Class will start on January 7 and meet Wednesdays from 1-2:50pm at the LBCC Benton Center. Speak entirely in Spanish as you study grammar and practice Spanish conversation in groups. Also explores culture and language through stories, proverbs, poems and songs of Latin America and Spain. Class will start on January 7 and meet Wednesdays from 9-10:50am at the LBCC Benton Center. Cost is $79.                                           

AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE I & II                                                                                                    
American Sign Language level I is for anyone interested in learning American Sign Language and about deaf culture. Level II is communication in American Sign Language for those ready for silent communication through games and group interaction. Two terms of ASL or permission of instructor required for level II. Both levels start on January 8 and meet Thursdays from 6:30-8:20pm at the LBCC Benton Center. Cost is $95.                                           

GEARING UP FOR GARDENING         
Get inspiring and useful ideas whether you are an experienced gardener familiar with the Willamette Valley or a novice. Topics include front yard gardening, harvest to table, backyard wildlife habitats, control of invasives and more. This popular, free brown bag series is brought to you through the collaboration of Benton County-OSU Extension Master Gardeners, Corvallis-Benton County Public Library and LBCC-Benton Center. Class will start on January 6 and meet Tuesdays from 12:10-1:00pm at the Corvallis Public Library, 645 NW Monroe. Lectures are free to attend!                                                                                    

INTRODUCTION TO SEWING                                                                                                     
Always wanted to learn to sew? Michelle will help you select appropriate fabric, thread, and notions to complete a project with or without a commercial pattern. With basic sewing skills, you will be able to apply various methods of sewing, mending and altering clothing and other items. A hands-on class, best for those with little or no sewing experience. Students are welcome to bring their own sewing machines, but loaner machines are available. If you wish to borrow a sewing machine, please make arrangements with the instructor ahead of time. Want to play the Uke? Almost anyone can learn to play a ukulele and afford to buy one too! Take this four-week class, explore your creative musical side, and be more fun to have at parties! Class will start on January 7 and meet Wednesdays from 7-8:50pm at the LBCC Benton Center. Cost is $65.

FOR THE LOVE OF SINGING                                                                                                
You'll be "singing-around-the-guitar" of Tom Demarest in this interactive musical journey through the music of the mid-fifties, sixties, & seventies. Bring your love of singing, and your interest in the music of the golden era of Folk, Rock & Roll, Folk-Rock, and Classic Rock. If you're a functional guitar player, bring your guitar the first week to see if your skills can meet the demands of this musical genre. No singing experience needed. Class will start on January 6 and meet Tuesdays from 7-8:50pm at the Troubadour Music Center, 521 SW 2nd Street, Corvallis. Cost is $59.

GUITAR, BEGINNING                                                                                                   
Group instruction for the beginning Guitarist. Class is designed to educate, inspire and challenge anyone who has ever had the desire to play the guitar. Through a hands-on approach (be sure to bring your guitar to class), you will be able to learn the skills and techniques that can be applied to virtually any musical style. Class will start on January 6 and meet Tuesdays from 7-8:50pm at the LBCC Benton Center. Cost is $85.

DRIVER ED WITH PERMIT                   
Registration packets are available online at www.linnbenton.edu/driver-education and all centers one week prior to registration.  This ODOT approved program includes mandated 30 hours classroom instruction, parent/student orientation at first meeting, plus 12 hours on the road (6 hrs behind-the-wheel + 6 hrs driver observation).

WRITE YOUR LIFE STORY                                                                                              
Your own life stories and those of your family members are treasures that need to be preserved as carefully as photos.  Recall and recount family history in your narrative style with enhancement of detail, description and dialogue. Tips on publishing will enable you to submit articles or stories to magazines as fact or fiction.        
There will be a class offering that will start on January 6 and meet Tuesdays from 1:30-3:20pm at Peace Lutheran Church, 2540 Applegate, Philomath. Cost is $69. Another offering of Write Your Life Story will be meeting starting January 9 on Fridays from 1-2:50pm at Corvallis Senior Center, 2601 NW Tyler St. Cost is $69.                                                                                                                      

POETRY WORKSHOP                                                                                                         
Explore a variety of prompts to generate multiple poems with the benefit of immediate feedback from an audience of peers.  Construct a chapbook for self-publication and exchange. Class will start on January 6 and meet Tuesdays from 7-8:50pm at the LBCC Benton Center. Cost is $89.

For all skill levels. Whether for publication or family, improve your writing in a supportive critique group guided by the instructor. Find out about writers' events, contests and publishing opportunities. Many stories critiqued in this class have gone on to awards and publication. Instructor C.
