LBCC Travel at the Tripp Film Series “Italy’s Fabled Islands”

Filmmaker Stan Walsh will present the film “Italy’s Fabled Isles,” the last show in the LBCC Travel at the Tripp film series, on Sunday, April 7 at 2 p.m. in the Linn-Benton Community College Russell Tripp Performance Center. Join the filmmaker and experts from AAA Travel after the show for a question and answer session, with prizes from AAA. Explore some of Italy’s most exotic islands, the fabled islands of Sicily, Capri and Elba. Visit Capri’s beautiful Blue Grotto, the two-mile high Mount Etna on Sicily along with the ancient buildings, old towns and lively people. A native of New Jersey, Walsh attended the University of Southern California where he moonlighted as a projectionist for globetrotting lecturers. This on-the-job training planted the seed for future filmmaking, and he has established film series in Florida, New Jersey and California. LBCC Valley Writers Series Holds Silent Art Auction

The Valley Writers Series at Linn-Benton Community College will hold a silent art auction April 1-26 to benefit the series.  The auction, held in the South Santiam Hall conference room on the Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW., will include fine art pieces donated by local supporters. A free orientation to learn about the class series Microbusiness Explore, Commit and Launch will be held by the LBCC Small Business Development Center Monday, April 1 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Calapooia Center, room CC-203, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.  Attend orientation to decide if the classes are right for you. LBCC Holds Pesticides Applicator Classes

Do you have an employee who has studied hard but failed the Oregon Department of Agriculture pesticide applicator license exam? Do you have an employee who needs in-depth training in pesticide application and safety, or extra coaching in math and calibration skills needed for accurate applications? 

 The Small Business Development Center at Linn-Benton Community College has courses designed to prepare your senior agriculture workers to take the State of Oregon Department of Agriculture pesticide applicator exam. LBCC Offers Wildland Firefighting Training

Wildland Firefighting Training will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College on April 26, 27 and 28 and May 10 and 11 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the LBCC Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd., SW. Taught by a lead instructor certified by the National Wildfire Suppression Association, this course is designed to provide entry-level firefighter skills including one day of field training. Learn what it takes to assist in the suppression of wildfires, the primary factors affecting the start and spread of wildfires, how to communicate on the fire-line and how to use the Incident Command System. Course curriculum meets or exceeds the National Wildfire Coordinating Group 310-1 requirements. LBCC Hosts 4th Annual Chefs’ Show-off Cooking Competition

The 4th annual Chefs’ Show-Off cooking competition and food fair will be held Sunday, April 7, from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Linn-Benton Community College Commons dining hall, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Cosponsored by Ten Rivers Food Web and LBCC Culinary Arts Department, this event showcases food and those who produce and process it from Benton, Linn and Lincoln counties. Taste samples from local chefs: Patti D’Eliseo, A Posto Personal Chef Services, Newport; Todd Ketterman, LBCC Culinary Arts instructor; J.C. LBCC Offers AARP Driver Safety Program



The AARP Driver Safety Program will be held April 1 and 2 at Linn-Benton Community College Lebanon Center April 1 and 2. The program is designed to help develop and reinforce safe driving skills and techniques. Satisfactory completion of this class may qualify you for reduced auto insurance premiums (check with your insurance carrier). This one-week class will meet Monday and Tuesday, April 1 and 2 from 8:30 to 11:20 a.m. at the LBCC Lebanon Center, 44 Industrial Way. Class also offered May 6 and 7 at the Lebanon Senior Center from 8:30 a.m. to 11:20 a.m., and at the LBCC Sweet Home Center from 1 to 3:50 p.m. Cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. LBCC Holds Tree Climbing and Tree Care Classes

Tree climbing and tree care classes will be held at Linn-Benton Community College beginning April 4. The 11-week Arboriculture Practicum class provides field experience in tree climbing and tree work including how to safely access, rig, climb and work in broadleaf and coniferous trees of various sizes.  This two-credit class will meet Thursdays from 2 to 4:50 p.m. beginning April 4. Cost per credit is $96 with a $5 lab fee. No pre-requisite is required. A four-credit Arboriculture Principles and Practices class will be offered in addition to the practicum class. Learn how to select, plant and provide ongoing tree care in this comprehensive class. Class will transfer to Oregon State University. "Watercolor Foundations” will be held at the Lebanon Center Mondays beginning April 1 from 5:30 to 7:50 p.m., 44 Industrial Way. A “Life Stories” class will held at Linn-Benton Community College Albany, Lebanon, Sweet Home and centers spring term. Learn how to preserve your family stories and recall and recount family history in your own narrative style. Additional information about publishing is provided. The Albany class meets Tuesdays beginning April 2 from 2 to 3:50 p.m. at the Albany Senior Center, 489 NW Water Ave. The Lebanon Center class meets Wednesdays beginning April 3 from 2 to 3:50 p.m., 44 Industrial Way, room LC-223. Tractor and Farm Machinery Safety Class

Tractor and Farm Machinery Safety training will be held at Linn-Benton Community College’s Albany campus March 27- 29. Geared for farm workers ages 14 to 18, the course is developed and operated with the assistance of the OSU Extension Service in accordance with federal regulations. Students and parents must sign a Liability Waiver/Indemnification form within 24 hours of registration. The three-day class session will meet Wednesday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. beginning March 27. Cost for this non-credit class is $76.50 plus a $20 lab fee. LBCC Driver Education Registration Begins March 18

Registration for Drivers Education will begin March 18 for classes held at Linn-Benton Community College Albany, Corvallis and Sweet Home centers. LBCC’s Driver Education program serves students throughout Linn and Benton counties and is approved by the Oregon Department of Transportation. The course includes Oregon state mandated 30 hours of classroom instruction, a three-hour parent/student orientation at first meeting plus 12 hours behind-the wheel practice and driver observation.  Registration requirements include completed packet, fee, original driver permit and one photocopy. Registration packets are available at all centers one week prior to registration or online at www.linnbenton.edu/go/albany-community-ed/driver-education . Students must register at the offering LBCC center, on-line registration is not available. Cost for the course is $259 for ages 17 and under, $429 for ages 18 and over. LBCC Lebanon Center Offers Turning Point Transitions Class


The class "Turning Point Transitions" will be offered at Linn-Benton Community College’s Lebanon Center beginning April 8. Discover how to address the often-times stressful changes in your life by learning how to cope with change, how to love and accept yourself, how to manage stress and how to set goals. Information will be provided on career exploration options and how to identify your skills.

LBCC Offers Real Estate Property Manager Course

A Real Estate Property Manager class will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College beginning April 9. Designed to prepare you to manage rental property, this course combines online and in-class instruction to meet the 60-hour requirement for the Oregon Property Manager Pre-License course. LBCC Announces Plans to Balance Budget

LBCC officials announced today the first step of plans to increase focus on student success and completion, while balancing its budget. The changes are part of education redesign efforts at LBCC to focus on better results for the largest number of students with available funding. The effort supports the college’s mission “to engage in an education that enables us all to participate in, contribute to and benefit from the cultural richness and educational vitality of our community.” The plan includes a combination of program redesigns and eliminations, and the suspension of one program pending its redesign. The college will work with community partners in an effort to find ways for services to remain available. Effected programs will continue at LBCC through the end of June. The plan also responds to a $2.9 million shortfall in the college budget created by reductions in state funding, increased employee retirement and health care benefit costs, and a 5 percent drop in enrollment. CWOSE - Middle & High-School Science Fair Results

Awards were recently announced for the Central Western Oregon Science Expo held at Linn-Benton Community College March 2. The fair hosted 53 high school and middle school students from Linn, Benton, Lane, Marion, Polk, Yamhill, Tillamook and Lincoln counties to compete in science and engineering categories. Participating students produced 43 exhibits, with 29 judges on-hand to score the projects. Awards were given for excellent achievement along with $32,000 in Oregon university scholarships. Two students also won an all-expense paid invitation to participate at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair to be held in Phoenix, Arizona in May. CWOSE is a regional fair affiliated with the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair and the Intel Northwest Science Expo. Students from 21 Oregon high schools and one trade academy competed in the annual High School Industrial Skills Contest held Thursday, March 7 at Linn-Benton Community College in Albany. Students competed in contests for drafting and engineering graphics, machine tool milling and turning and several types of welding. Winners were announced at an awards ceremony held at the college following the competition. LBCC Offers Real Estate Pre-License Exam Course

A Real Estate Broker Pre-License Exam course will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College beginning April 3. Designed to prepare you for the Oregon Real Estate Brokers License Exam, this 150-hour course is the fastest way to qualify to take the state exam. The local real estate market is beginning to turn around. Now is the time to position yourself for the up-turn.  This 11-week course will meet on Wednesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. beginning April 3 at the LBCC Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW. Course content is mostly Internet based. Students are expected to have on-line capability, to self-study and attend all class sessions. English for Speakers of Other Languages Program

LBCC will hold classes for non-native speakers of English beginning the week of April 1. Learn to speak, read and write English in an encouraging environment. Orientation sessions begin March 18 at the LBCC Benton Center, 757 NW Polk Ave, Corvallis and March 19 at LBCC’s Albany campus, Calapooia Center room 210, 6500 SW Pacific Blvd, Albany campus. LBCC NSH Gallery Features Albany Painters

Waverly Lake by Molly Perry Members of the Albany Painting Enthusiasts will be exhibiting work in the LBCC North Santiam Hall Galleries, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, from March 11 to April 19. “Around Albany, Now and Then,” features over 40 paintings by 11 local artists that focus on the historic and contemporary features of Albany, as well as the surrounding landscape. A public opening reception will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. on Friday, March 15, in the North Santiam Hall second-floor atrium. The Albany Painting Enthusiasts started out in 2006 as a loose confederation of plein aire painters who gathered monthly to paint at local gardens, nearby farms and nurseries, and various city landmarks. It has since grown into a group of about 15 that has recently taken on the goal of promoting and facilitating art events in Albany. LBCC Offers Forklift Safety Training

Forklift Safety Training will be offered through Business and Employer Services at Linn-Benton Community College on Saturday, April 6, from 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the LBCC Albany Campus, Industrial C building, room IC-103, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. This eight-hour course will provide four hours of classroom training and four hours of practice on the forklift. Training includes forklift safety, handling and moving loads, principles of lifting, stacking and unstacking loads and driving with a load. Upon completion of eight hours of training and meeting the requirements, student will receive an award of completion to take to their current or future employer. LBCC is encouraging students who are thinking of getting their General Education Development (GED) certificate to finish their testing as soon as possible. The current version of the GED tests will expire at the end of 2013, and will be replaced Jan. 2, 2014 with the new 2014 GED test. To avoid having to start over, students must pass all five tests in reading, science, social studies, math and writing by the end of this year. If you are ready to take the GED tests, you can contact the LBCC Student Assessment Center at 541-917-4781. If you need help preparing for the tests, LBCC offers GED classes throughout the year. You must attend a free two-session orientation before registering for classes. LBCC orientation sessions will be offered the week of March 18, and GED classes will begin the week of April 1. Spend a day immersed in the company of herbs and herb lovers at the 2nd annual Sustainable Herb Conference Sunday, March 17 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the LBCC Benton Center, room BC-204, 757 NW Polk Ave., Corvallis. Conference includes lectures and workshops facilitated by local experts, with keynote speaker Cascade Anderson Geller. An herbal practitioner for over thirty years, Geller has taught at multiple naturopathic colleges and has lectured widely throughout North America on the healing power of plants.
