Free information sessions for those interested in becoming a Polysomnographic Technologist, or sleep technician, will be held at Linn-Benton Community College. The information sessions will be held on Feb. 13, 10 a.m.-Noon, room CC-210; and Feb. 25, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., room CC-203. Both sessions will be held in the LBCC Calapooia Center building, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Attendance at one of the information sessions is mandatory before applying for the program. Polysomnographic Technologists assist physicians with patients who have sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea. The program combines online and in-class instruction with a clinical practicum where students learn how to administer, score and interpret a variety of sleep disorders and their treatments. Linn-Benton Community College will hold a continuing education workshop for License Massage Therapists on “The Spine” March 16 and 17.

 Techniques covered in this workshop include how to work with shoulder and pelvic asymmetries, how to identify and address spinal rotations, bends and shifts, and specific psoas and abdominal release techniques.

Forklift Safety Training will be offered through LBCC Business and Employer Services Saturday, Feb. 23, from 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the LBCC Albany Campus, Industrial C-103, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. This eight-hour course will provide four hours of classroom training and four hours of practice on the forklift. Training includes forklift safety, handling and moving loads, principles of lifting, stacking and un-stacking loads and driving with a load. Upon completion of eight hours of training and meeting the requirements, student will receive an award of completion to take to their current or future employer. John Van Dreal "Again #2" A public reception and gallery hosting four Willamette Valley artists whose work is on display in the North Santiam Hall Gallery at Linn-Benton Community College will be held Wednesday, Jan. 30, from noon to 1 p.m. in the NSH second floor atrium, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.  Eugene sketchbook artist Ken O’Connell and Salem painter John Van Dreal share the NSH gallery walls with multi-media artist Shelley Jordon and photographer Julia Bradshaw, who are both faculty at Oregon State University in Corvallis. In addition, O’Connell will lead a workshop at 2 p.m. Wednesday on the use of sketchbooks in the art and design process in the Fireside Room, second floor of the Calapooia Center building. Oregon College Transfer Day Information Fair will be held at Linn-Benton Community College on Wednesday, Feb. 6 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Takena Hall, 6500 Pacific Blvd S.W., Albany. General Education (GED) and Adult Basic Education classes will be held at LBCC's Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers in February. Improve your skills in reading, writing or math, or prepare for your GED test. Free orientations will be held Feb. 4 and 5 from 9 a.m. to 11:50 a.m., or 6 p.m. to 8:50 p.m. at the LBCC Lebanon Center, 44 Industrial Way. The 36th annual Family Fun Day at Linn-Benton Community College will be held on Saturday, Feb. 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the LBCC Activities Center gym, Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd., Albany.  Children ages one to six will enjoy activities such as play dough, an obstacle course, crafts, bounce house, face painting, puppet show, putt putt golf and much more. There will also be a used toy and book sale.  Everyone is invited to attend this inexpensive, fun-filled event. AARP Driver Safety Program will be offered through the LBCC Lebanon Center February 4 and 5. The AARP program is designed to help develop and reinforce safe driving skills and techniques. Satisfactory completion of this class may qualify you for reduced auto insurance premiums (check with your insurance carrier). The Linn-Benton Opera Guild will preview the opera Tosca, by Giacomo Puccini, on Tuesday, Jan. 29 at 7:45 p.m. at 303 Benton Hall, Oregon State University campus, Corvallis. OSU music professor Angela Carlson will tell the story of the opera and play recorded excerpts from the score. The class Healthy Gluten Free Living will be held at Linn-Benton Community College’s Sweet Home Center beginning Jan. 16. Designed for those with gluten intolerance or celiac disease, learn the basics of gluten related disorders, meal planning, shopping, cooking, cooking, and hidden gluten and cross contamination. Class is taught by a registered nursed who specializes in gluten free lifestyles.

Dr. Greg Hamann Greg Hamann , president of Linn-Benton Community College, has been appointed to serve a four-year term on the state Quality Education Commission . Hamann’s appointment by Governor John Kitzhaber makes him the first person on the commission who works outside of the K-12 education system. Created in 2001 with a primary focus on K-12, the non-partisan commission is expanding its work to include pre-kindergarten through public higher education. “This appointment is a recognition not just of my efforts and contributions, but of those of the entire LBCC community,” said Hamann. Paintings by Portland artist and LBCC graduate Robert Story are on exhibit in the South Santiam Hall Gallery at Linn-Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW, in Albany through Feb. 1. A reception and gallery talk will be held on Tuesday Jan. 8 from 1 to 2 p.m. in the gallery. Story describes his exhibit, titled “Ruminations In the Outside,” as “a playground for my thoughts and emotions, as well as a catharsis.”  He said he paints in order to express his thoughts aesthetically. A 2004 graduate of LBCC, Story works for Bullseye Glass Co. in Portland as a furnace builder. LBCC's South Santiam Hall Gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
