LBCC Offers Driver Education Classes Summer Term

Several Driver Education classes are being offered summer term through Linn-Benton Community College Albany Community Education. The five-week course includes Oregon state mandated 30 hours of classroom instruction, a three-hour parent/student orientation at first meeting plus 12 hours behind-the wheel practice and driver observation. First class session starts June 25. Registration requirements include completed packet, fee, original driver permit and one photocopy. Registration packets are available at all centers one week prior to registration or online at www.linnbenton.edu/go/albany-community-ed/driver-education . Cost for the course is $259 for ages 17 and under, $429 for ages 18 and over. Class must be dropped 24 hours prior to start date for refund. LBCC Tractor and Farm Machinery Safety Class

Tractor and Farm Machinery Safety training will be held at Linn-Benton Community College’s Albany campus, with the first session beginning June 25. Geared for farm workers ages 14 to 18, the course is developed and operated with the assistance of the OSU Extension Service in accordance with federal regulations. Students and parents must sign a Liability Waiver/Indemnification form within 24 hours of registration. The first three-day class session will meet Monday through Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. beginning June 25. The second three-day session will meet Thursday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. beginning June 28. Cost for this non-credit class is $76.50 plus a $20 lab fee. LBCC Announces $90k Parenting Success Network Grant

Linn-Benton Community College announced that it received a third year of funding to support the Parenting Success Network in Linn and Benton counties, a collaborative project facilitated by the college. The $90,000 grant from the Oregon Parenting EducationCollaborative is part of a new multi-year initiative developed by The Oregon Community Foundation in partnership with the Meyer Memorial Trust , The FordFamily Foundation , The Collins Foundation and Oregon State University . Established to increase public acceptance of the importance of parenting education, the Parenting Success Network helps coordinate and improve the quality of parenting services, enhance accessibility of information regarding services and positive parenting, and provides training and resources for parenting educators. LBCC Benton Center Pottery Sale & Show

The semi-annual LBCC Benton Center Pottery Sale will be held on Friday, June 8 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on the patio outside of the center ceramics studio, 757 NW Polk Avenue, Corvallis. LBCC ceramic faculty, instructional assistants and students will showcase and sale their work including raku, high fire, salt fire and wood fire pieces. Both functional and one-of-a-kind pieces range from very affordable to collectible. A portion of all sales is used to purchase studio equipment. LBCC Lebanon Center & Sweet Home Center Dance, Exercise & Fitness Classes

A variety of exercise and fitness classes are being offered through the LBCC Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers beginning the week of June 25. Classes will be held in Lebanon, Sweet Home, Scio and Brownsville and include:   Better Bones & Balance™, Body Toning & Aerobics, Boot Camp, Cardio Strength & Balance, Easy Cardio Fitness, Hip Hop Hustle (TM), Step Boot Camp, T'ai Chi, 20-20-10 Fitness Mix, Yoga, and Zumba®. Open registration begins online on May 28 or in person on May 29. Adults age 62 and above are eligible for a 25 percent reduction in tuition. Reduction does not apply to material or lab fees. LBCC Spring Choir Concert “The Olympic Journey: Going Places"

The Linn-Benton Community College choirs will perform their spring concert “The Olympic Journey: Going Places, ” on Thursday, June 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the LBCC Russell Tripp Performance Center, Takena Hall, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. LBCC director of choral activities, James Reddan, will conduct the performances of the Concert Choir, Re-Choired Element Chamber Choir, Women’s Ensemble, Blue Light Special and the Sirens. Lebanon Center Business Technology Lab Classes

Upgrade your office skills or learn new ones in computer and business classes offered through the Business Technology Labs at the Linn-Benton Community College Lebanon Center, 44 Industrial Way, beginning June 25. These five-week, one-credit evening classes allow you to progress at your own pace. Classes offered include: Windows and Computer Fundamentals, PowerPoint Fundamentals, Excel Fundamentals, and Filing. The center also offers five-week, variable-credit evening classes in Business Math and Word Processing for Business/MS Word. Complete one, two or three credits and up to two classes. Cost is $96 per credit. Students taking lab classes are required to attend class orientation, which is the first day of class. Adult Basic Education - General Education Diploma (GED) basic skills classes will be offered at Linn-Benton Community College's Lebanon Center during summer term. ABE-GED classes can help you prepare to pass your GED test and help improve your skills in reading, writing or math, which can help you to fill job requirements or prepare for college. A free two-day orientation will be held at the LebanonCenter, 44 Industrial Way, June 25 and 26 and again July 23 and 24 from 9 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. You must attend both days of the orientation in order to register for the class. Cost to attend the GED classes is  $30. Scholarships may be available. Classes will meet on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. at the center. Open registration begins May 29. Massage Therapists Continuing Education Workshop

The workshop “Foot, Ankle and Knee,” a continuing education workshop for Licensed Massage Therapists, will be offered through LBCC Business and Employer Services on Saturday, June 23. Learn to identify and address plantar fasciitis, flat feet, high arches, achilles tendon injuries, knee imbalances and patellar tracking. This one-day workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in North Santiam Hall, room NSH-106 on the LBCC Albany campus, 6500 SW Pacific Blvd. Cost for the workshop is $125. SSH Gallery Exhibit “Nine by Nine: Designing Words”

“Nine by Nine: Designing Words,” a collaborative exhibit by student designers and poets at Linn-Benton Community College, is on view in the college’s South SantiamHall Gallery May 21 through June 8. An opening reception will be held on Tuesday, May 22, at 3:30 p.m. in the SSH Gallery, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. The exhibit showcases the illustrations of nine graphic design students who created their work in response to nine original poems written by student and faculty poets. The show pairs the illustrations with the poems that inspired each of them, and the poetry itself has been lettered for display by the design students.  “It is a pleasure and an honor to combine our word craft with the fine work of the graphic design students,” said Ruth Krueger, LBCC’s student poet laureate. “We hope the combined art stirs within the audience a desire to search for meaning, to find life.” Krueger, a resident of Lebanon, is one of the nine poets participating in the show. ...

Benton Center Acoustic Showcase Features Multicultural Singers

Several community members from the Corvallis Multicultural Literacy Center singing project will perform at the LBCC Benton Center Acoustic Showcase on Friday, May 18 from noon to 1 p.m. in the center’s student lounge, 757 NW Polk Ave., Corvallis. After receiving a generous grant from the Benton County Cultural Coalition, the literacy center created a CD project with songs in different native languages performed by community members. Most of the singers had never recorded before. The project culminated in the recording of more than 20 community members singing 22 traditional and original songs in 10 different languages including: Sanskrit and Hindi from India; Sasak from Indonesia; French; Vietnamese; Tagalog from the Philippines; English; Mongolian; Taiwanese; Dari from Afghanistan; and Spanish from Mexico.  The Benton Center Acoustic Showcase is free and open to the public. Parenting Education Week Set for May 20-26

Parenting Education Week, a weeklong celebration on the important work of parents and parenting education programs, will be held May 20-26.  To kick-off the week, Gov. JohnKitzhaber signed a proclamation in support of the event in the Ceremonial Office at the Capitol May 11. Local government representatives will sign proclamations as well, including Corvallis mayor Julie Manning, Monday, May 21 at 12 p.m. in the Fire Station meeting room; Benton County Commissioners, Tuesday, May 22 at 12 p.m. in the commissioners meeting room in the Benton Plaza; and Linn County Commissioners, Wednesday, May 23 at 9:35 a.m. in the Linn County Courthouse, room 200. LBCC Excel Workshops

Learn how to use Excel spreadsheet software in two workshops offered through Linn-Benton Community College Business and Employer Services. The workshop Excel 2007-Level 2, covers how to create linking formulas between sheets and separate files, data table options including simple and advanced filters, basic pivot tables, creating simple macros, and how to use Excel templates. Excel 2007 will meet on Tuesday, June 19 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Forum, room F-202 on the LBCC Albany campus, 6500 SW Pacific Blvd. The workshop Excel Formulas covers many examples of more complex formulas, including H and V lookups, logical statements, Dsum and other data functions, and named ranges in formula. Benton Center Ceramics Studio Event

Corvallis ceramic artist and instructor Cynthia Spencer will hold an evening slide show and presentation on Friday, May 18 at 7 p.m. at the LBCC Benton Center, BC-244, 757 Polk Ave. NW, Corvallis. Spencer’s presentation includes hand-building construction ideas and ways to show and sell your art. This free presentation will be part of a reception fundraising event for the ceramics studio beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the center. Take a tour of the ceramics studio, and join in for a silent auction. Proceeds form the auction will be used to build new display cases for student and community work. Spencer also will offer a studio workshop on Saturday, May 19 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Benton Center ceramics studio, which includes hands-on demonstrations and a no-host potluck. LBCC 4th Annual Albany Sings! Choir Concert

Celebrate choral music in the Willamette Valley at the 4 th annual Albany Sings! Choir Concert on Thursday, May 24 at 7 p.m. at West Albany High School, 1130 Queen Avenue SW, Albany, Oregon. Approximately 300 singers from the Calapooia, Memorial, and North Albany Middle Schools, Timber Ridge School, West and South Albany High Schools, and the Linn-Benton Community College choirs will perform a plethora of choral works sure to knock your socks off! Twenty-one students received awards at Linn-Benton Community College’s annual Juried Art Student Exhibit at a reception held Wednesday, May 9, in the college’s North Santiam Hall Galleries. Jess Graff of Corvallis was awarded Best of Show for her ceramic sculpture “Distortions, Womb” by jurors Becca McCannell and Diane Tarter, art professors at Western Oregon University in Monmouth. The juror’s also bestowed Juror’s Choice Awards to Johnny Beaver of Lebanon for his painting “Copula” and to Pearl Stephens of Alsea for her graphite drawing “Untitled Torso.” Stephen’s drawing was also chosen for one of two President’s Purchase Awards; the other went to David Aaron Reizes of Philomath for his anagama sculpture titled “Riv...

LBCC Preschool Cooperative in Philomath Enrolling for Fall Term

The Linn-Benton Community College Preschool Cooperative in Philomath is currently enrolling for fall term 2012. Preschool classes will meet on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings beginning September 24 at Clemens Primary School in Philomath. The program will focus on high-quality learning experiences that provide 3-5-year-olds the foundation for success throughout elementary and secondary school. Parents take an active part of their child’s learning, working in the classroom and joining the teacher in activities planning. Financial assistance is available. LBCC Middle School Students/Parents Outreach Event

Middle school students and their families are invited to attend a free bilingual event at Linn-Benton Community College on how to plan for and pay for college on Saturday, May 12 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the college Commons cafeteria and conference rooms, second floor Calapooia Center, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. This event will include informational sessions with representatives from Oregon colleges and universities on how to get started exploring and preparing for college and for career choices, along with fun activities. This event is free. Lunch and refreshments will be provided to participants. Pre-registration is recommended. LBCC Chamber Choir Ranked Among Top Choirs Worldwide

The Linn-Benton Community College Re-Choired Element Chamber Choir was recently ranked 607 out of the top 1,000 choirs worldwide by Interkultur World Rankings. The choir received 800 out of a possible 1,170 points in the ranking system. The choir also ranked in the top 200 for Mixed Choirs from throughout the world. "It is absolutely an honor for the students and the music program,” said James Reddan, LBCC music faculty and choral director. “It is truly a testament to all of the hard work of the students and all that they have worked for!" Founded in 1988 in Germany, Interkultur hosts international choral competitions. High-ranking international adjudicators evaluate the choirs according to the Musica Mundi evaluation system.  Choirs are ranked based on categories such as performance and reputation throughout the world, with only the top 1,000 choirs from across the globe being recognized. Music Faculty Recital “American Pops”

The LBCC Music Department will present its final music recital for the season, “American Pops,” featuring LBCC music faculty on Thursday, May 10 at 7:30 p.m. in South Santiam Hall, room SSH-213, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. The performance will feature LBCC music faculty Jason Caffarella, tenor; Patty Gerig, soprano; Diana Hancock, piano; Diane Hawkins, flute; Alex Lancaster, piano; and James Reddan, tenor. Faculty will perform songs that have become representative of America, American Music and American composers. Works by Charles Ives, Native American flute pieces and musical theater including Sweeny Todd, Casbah, Annie Get Your Gun, Chess, and much more. There’s sure to be something for everyone.
