Linn-Benton Community College

Dr. Robert Harrison, social science instructor at Linn-Benton Community College, will give a two-week guided tour of Florence, Italy June 20 to July 5, 2017. The tour is open to LBCC students and community members, and is also being offered to LBCC students as a Humanities credit class “The Power of the Past: Florence, Italy.” Participants will explore the Florence region and culture, including the art and ideas of the Italian Renaissance, Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. Travelers will stay in the heart of Florence, close to the Duomo Cathedral and train station. Total estimated cost including round trip airfare, lodging and meals is $2,600, or $2,900 if including the 3-credit Humanities class. A trip deposit is due by March 1, 2017. LBCC will implementing much needed upgrades and performing maintenance on several systems on the weekend of January 28 and 29, 2017. Expanding a partnership between industry and education intended to create a pipeline between high school and local living wage jobs to four additional Linn County school districts is part of a new project being financially supported by businesses, schools and a $440,000 grant from The Ford Family Foundation. Lebanon, Sweet Home, Scio and Central Linn will join Greater Albany, Corvallis and Philomath as participating Districts. The expansion also includes the Greater Santiam Boys and Girls Club, which serves youth in Sweet Home and Lebanon. The purpose of this joint effort is to provide a clearer pathway to family wage jobs in the region so that young people can remain in and contribute to the economic and social vitality of their communities. Nominations are being accepted for Linn-Benton Community College’s Distinguished Alumni Award. Thirty-three LBCC alumni have received the college’s Distinguished Alumni award since its establishment in 2005. If you know a former LBCC student who has demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in their profession and through service to their community, now is your chance to nominate them for this annual award. Nomination deadline is Monday, Feb. 20. Nomination forms and criteria are available online at www.linnbenton.edu/distinguished-alumni . A Pesticide Private Applicator class in Spanish will be held through the Small Business Development Center at Linn-Benton Community College February 2 and 3. Designed to prepare senior agriculture workers to take the State of Oregon Department of Agriculture pesticide applicator exam, classes provide in-depth training, including extra coaching in math and calibration skills. Course may be used for recertification credits. Pesticide Private Applicator in Spanish meets February 2 and 3, beginning at 8 a.m. both days, at LBCC’s Calapooia Center, room CC-203/205. Cost is $119.
